Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.
Rules:
-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --
-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

I dont know much about the politics of the region other than "Zionism bad, Israel is US vassal state and the lesser Satan."
Can someone please explain what's going on here/where all this might be heading? I should know, but feel ashamed for not knowing, so am asking earnestly here.
Iran is the last country in the middle east hostile to the USA*, ever since Iran overthrew the pro-West Shah the USA has been trying to find ways to make them submit. If Iran develops a nuclear program, future regime change becomes exponentially more difficult and dangerous.
Also as the only Shia country**, they are allegedly arming and supporting Shia militants across the middle east, most notable is Hezbollah which Israel fights on and off.
Israel's primary concern is that a nuclear Iran would provide dirty bombs to Hezbollah or other militants and bypass the iron dome.
*Not that any country in the ME like the USA **Iraq and Azerbaijan are officially Secular Islamic
That's propaganda. Their concern is the same as any unhinged settler nuclear power. Namely they want the right and power to destroy with nuclear weapons their enemies at a time of their choosing without those enemies being able to hit them back. It's the oldest want in warfare and empires: to be able to hit an enemy in a way they cannot hit you back. As genocidal settlers they know deep down the wrong they work and how the region is full of people who rightfully hate them and they fear those people and need nuclear weapons to deter and intimidate them. It's the samson option, the bluff that they can and will take out everyone around them if they fall.
I'd point out Lebanon is secular but has political roles reserved specifically to Shia (and Sunni, and Christian)
Ok, thanks so much for explaining! Appreciate it!
Israel and Iran have traded blows once or twice a year for the past few years now. It is worrying how it seems to be escalating year over year but imo it won't evolve into a full scale conflict this time. Iran is desperately toeing a fine line between looking weak demanding diplomacy and responding with a commensurate military action but they genuinely do not want an all out war with Israel.
For the Israelis these regular attacks are partly to destabilize Iran but primarily to shore up support at home.
It would not surprise me if the Trump regime actually played a role in making this happen to distract from what's going on here in the states but maybe I'm giving them too much credit.
