Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

The chief of the US Space Force has warned that China is putting military capabilities into space at a “mind-boggling” pace, significantly increasing the risk of warfare in orbit.

“The number of different categories of space weapons that [China has] created and ... the speed with which they’re doing it is very threatening,” said General Chance Saltzman, head of space operations at the US military’s recently created force tasked with protecting American interests in space.

We should fund military in space, says guy funded by military in space

[–] Sarmyth@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

To be fair, determining that is exactly his fucking job right? If not him, who?

[–] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

NASA's job is not defense analysis.

[–] crapwittyname@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

No, it's space administration. And they are the ones who actually know a thing about how spaceflight works, unlike this guy, evidently.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

This guy probably knows a bit more about what's going on on the Chinese Space Station than you do.

Edit: a downvote with no response is an admission that you don't know what you're talking about and just are making shit up.

[–] crapwittyname@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Haha! To prove that it wasn't me, I just downvoted you. You are now on -1.

Sorry dude, you assumed too much there. I'm in Europe, and don't go around down voting people in the middle of the night.

Anyway, your point. It's irrelevant, since we were talking about NASA vs. the space rangers or whatever they're called. Not This Guy vs. me.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

This guy, the head of Space Force, also knows more about what's actually going on on the Chinese space station that NASA most likely due to compartmentalized intelligence.

Previous edit didn't apply to you, clearly. It applied to the person that downvoted and didn't reply

You’re right, let’s allow China to militarize space unopposed. What could go wrong?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Reminder: we were opposing such things just fine when the Space Force was just part of the regular Air Force.

[–] Plastic_Ramses@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Reminder: situations tend to change as time moves forward.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes. In this case the change was because Donald Trump needed something to brag about.

[–] Plastic_Ramses@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You're not entirely wrong.

However, it is 100% prudent to put military power into space as many other nations are doing the same.

Just because you dont like the words "space force" doesn't make it a bad move.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I didn't say it was a bad move to do it. I said we did it just fine when it was part of the Air Force.

We don't need a Space Force.

[–] Plastic_Ramses@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, we dont need an air force either. 🙄

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world -4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Except we do because the Army Air Corps was getting too big and out-of-hand.

That was not the case with the Air Force's military space activities.

[–] Plastic_Ramses@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh, i didn't know i was talking to someone who was privy to all levels of missions regarding the United States' interest in securing outer space.

Thank you for your service. 😂😂

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You seem to think you're in the know. Why was the Space Force suddenly necessary when Trump became president?

[–] Plastic_Ramses@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Well, just off the top of my head, I imagine there were many, many redundant departments specializing in satelite operations and maintenance spread across the army, navy, and air force that were consolidated.

Id also imagine that obtaining a production grant is quite a bit easier as there would be only one branch fighting for these things instead of three.

There is also the matter of focus, meaning that now there is a person directly responsible for all activities in sapce, foreign and domestic, that would be briefing the president as opposed to sidenotes in a meeting.

If you just stopped to think for just the 30 seconds it took me to write this comment, you too may be able to apply some logic to the situation.

You post funny memes.

Stay in your lane.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And yet that wasn't a problem under 8 years of Obama? Why?

And what is your lane? Because it doesn't sound like this is your area of expertise either. It sounds like you just think Space Force is cool.

[–] Plastic_Ramses@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just so you are aware, because you seem to have trouble with that, the space force wasn't created overnight during trumps admin.

The ball started rolling sometime around 2010 when russia and china stated their own military presence and focus in space, which would out it squarely under obamas admin.

My lane would be relying on objective facts.

Please stop speaking on things you are extremely ignorant of.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You didn't tell me what your lane is. I wonder why?

[–] Plastic_Ramses@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oof, on top of not understanding how the United States political apparatus works, you have a hard time reading.

Life must be verrrry difficult and frightening for you.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You're right. I missed that. So you think the two lanes are "post funny memes" and "rely on objective facts" and they cannot cross.

Interesting.

That doesn't sound like you're relying on objective facts to come to that conclusion.

Especially when it wouldn't be especially rational to make someone who's lane is to "post funny memes" a mod of c/WorldNews.

Maybe they were just taking advantage of a poor intellectually disabled soul like myself?

[–] Plastic_Ramses@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hahahahhahah, bust out that mod standing.

It's all you have.

😂😂😂. God damn, thanks for the laugh. This is the funniest thing you've ever posted. Holy shit.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The above post has nothing to do with "objective facts" or the early history of Space Force. I thought that was your lane. Why have you stepped out of your lane?
