I’m too lazy to do a full reset of my phone, so I was wondering if there is a way to help me pinpoint what exactly happens when my phone freezes. I do have a decent amount of apps but non of those really run in the background (to my knowledge). I also do have a custom ROM so it could also be just a bug in it, but while the installation was still fresh, I haven’t experienced such freezes.

Would Logcat thingie be useful?

Hello! I have GrapheneOS on my pixel 7, and yesterday I updated it to the latest version. Today, I tried setting a timer and... It didn't work. I'm using simple clock from simple mobile tools. Using the stock clock does work flawlessly instead. Do any of you experience the same?

How to reproduce:

  • Install simple clock
  • open the app and create a new timer, let's say 5 min, and start it
  • close the app
  • there is no notification showing "a timer is running", and after 5 minutes no sound will be played
  • if instead of closing the app you just minimize it, then the notification is shown. After this, you can close the app and the notification will stay, working as expected

(I have it set as not optimized)

Help Me Find the Perfect Email App for Me

I am using an IMAP email.

I am currently using Outlook on PC, and the rules setting on Outlook is an important part of my routine.

I was wondering if there's an email app that I can seamlessly use both on Android and PC.

I currently use the Local send app to send files wirelessly between devices.

Its max speed is ~3.5mbps when sending on a 2.4ghz wifi mode and ~5mbps on 5ghz. If I turn off encryption it can reach 10-26mbps of transfer speeds with 5ghz wifi.

Is there a faster way aside from usb data cable transfer?

I have tried nearby share and found it unreliable and slower. Total commander wifi transfer is not functional on android 13.

Files I transfer can be a gig in size.

Hello! I have a pixel 7 with GrapheneOS, and would like to install eSpeak as TTS engine. On fdroid there is no release available, and on github if I download the apk and try to install it, a "the app cannot be installed because your device is not compatible" error is thrown. Why this? And how can I install it?

Hi there,

I just switched from a Pixel 4a to a Fairphone 5 and on the Pixel when using adaptive brightness, i was able to lower the brightness to a specific value and that value would be set as the maximum for adaptive brightness (same for increasing to a brightness value and that being the new minimum). On my new Fairphone, that behaviour seems to be gone - is there any way of replicating/re-enabling this?

Update: My wife has decided to go for the repair. I managed to find the parts for about £30, and we're getting it done in a local place next week. Thanks for the advice :)

Hi all :)

My wife has dropped her Mi 10t Lite 5g one too many times, and now as well as a cracked screen, it won't charge. As far as I can tell, the charging port has come loose.

I'm hoping to get an estimate of the repair price, as all the local shops are closed until next week, but I'm also hoping to find some possible replacements to give her some options.

She mainly uses it for Facebook, emails, and WhatsApp, and some of the farming games where you seem to just click crap randomly. She also connects it to her car for maps and music, and takes photos of our kid.

A micro SD slot is essential, mostly due to the amount of music and photos she stores on it.

I'm hoping to spend around £200, but that's flexible if there's a jump in quality or features.

Thanks in advance :)

Hello! I am analyzing the battery usage of each app, and noticed that Mull browser is always on the very top of the list, even during night (between 4.00 AM and 6.00 AM). How is this possible? Is it an android error? I'm using GrapheneOS (Android 14)

Old OS Sources (kbin.social)
submitted 5 months ago by rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social to c/askandroid

I've got an older phone that predates any OS I can find readily, but did find out of date Lineage here. They also have a website with cyanogen. I'm not really worried about destroying the phone, but would rather not download something from a known bad source. Does anyone know if this site is acceptable?

Thanks!

Hello! Just switched from my old device with android 10 to my new pixel with Android 14 (GrapheneOS), and I'm missing a lot the persistent notification feature of android 10: I used Tasks.org from fdroid to get reminders in my notifications tray, and until I manually clicked "completed" there was no way to remove them, not by swiping nor by clicking "remove all". Now, on Android 14, if I swipe the notification.... It goes away, lost forever. Is there a way to enable the old behavior? Or a workaround to make sure I'll never delete an important notification by accident?

Thanks in advance!

I just discovered realme smartphones do not have this feature. Is there an apk or something I can download to get this feature? The smartphone in question is realme narzo 60 pro aka realme 11 pro 5G.

I'm considering updating from a 128GB to 512GB card. Normally, the procedure would to be create a disk image and restore it to the new card. I'm a bit skeptical of this process being this straightforward; in fact, I think this will simply break stuff for many apps.

I have several of my apps point to a folder on the card for data storage or backup, and the path includes what I believe is the serial number of the card -- it's an 8 character code of mostly digits and two upper score letters. This, I believe, will not carry over to the new card, therefore probably forcing me to format it and making me unable to access existing data. I can work with doing to connections all over, because it's 10 apps at most that do automatic backups on the card, but I have previously had problems with Android devices forcing card formatting despite the correct file system. The thing I'm mostly scared about is YouTube Music encrypted library

Does anyone here have experience doing so?

I decided today, finally, to give Debian a go on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra.

I have successfully installed the Debian remix and enabled permissions. I rather cavalierly selected the option to use the commandline rather than the visual option. It seems you cannot undo that preference once you have chosen it. So, I have committed to the inbuilt Bash Terminal in UserLAnd to get the job done. The documentation for this process is not up to date at GitHub and I couldn't find anything that specifically addressed my needs on YouTube.

Firstly, I ran:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

and it installed over 130 packages. Then, I ran:

export DISPLAY=:0 PULSE_SERVER=tcp:127.0.0.1:5900

I pressed enter twice and the UserLAnd Terminal didn't say or appear to do anything after I ran the instruction as the prompt shows no change and just returned to normal. So, as it appeared to accept the command without complaint, I felt there may have been a modicum of success. I had already registered an account with RealVNC and successfully logged on. I pressed the button at the lower right hand corner of the screen in RealVNC and it required two fields to be populated: [IP] Address & Name. In my Zsh Terminal in Termux, I then ran:

ifconfig

In the report in Termux, there are three different discrete number strings each embedded or nested in the report after the head code, wlan0. To me, they could all be IP addresses, as I am a bit of a noob.

I first tried the last string of the three in the field IP Address which was after the word 'broadcast', and entered it in the field and I just entered my first name in the Name field and it populated RealVNC with a box. I clicked on the box and it said:

The computer's IP address could not he contacted.

I tried to delete the box and try again but there appears to be no way to delete it. So, I tried for a second time. This time, I entered the first number string out of the three in the Address field, which was located immediately after the term 'inet' and populated my first name in the Name field again. It yielded a second box in RealVNC. When I click on this box it says:

The port on which the computer is listening for a connection could not be contacted.

I am stumped now and could really do with help.

Cheers

For those who don't know Hermit is a lite apps viewer that also provide sandboxing capabilities to some extent.

One could argue that Firefox with the right addons would be a better alternative, but even so I would like to know if such an app exists.

So, I'm aware of Syncthing for much of the media, which may help after getting things migrated, but I'm wondering if there may be something more like Clonezilla (or the like) for smartphones to more easily copy over apps & media in bulk.

I also know that the Play Store keeps track of installed apps and I can go through it to individually reinstall each one, but I imagine there must be a much better way.

I didn't really notice till now, and searching around I see lots of complaints in various communities for different apps.

Turns out it's intended behavior in Android 14. The only persistent thing about it is that they don't disappear when you hit "clear all", which is something I never do because I only dismiss the ones I need to instead of nuking everything.

Feels like a big step backwards and I don't understand the reasoning behind it. It was always possible to kill persistent notifications if we really needed to.

Is there any workaround to get it back?

Unnecessary backstory:

I use a notification creation app to leave important TODOs as pinned notifications so I see them when I check my phone.

I've missed some and I thought I was setting them wrong. Turns out the notifications can be dismissed accidentally, making the app useless.

I'm looking for an app that allows me to set long term goals with the individual steps that are needed for each of those goals. Similar to a bunch of todo lists, but that allows me to easily see my progress on the home screen via a graph/progress widget of some kind.

Some example goals are buying a house or publishing a new website. That sort of long term project where there are no strict deadlines, but there are clearly defined tasks.

I've spent over an hour looking so far but have come up dry. I'm having a hard time finding relevant apps when searching, as I keep getting results for habit trackers - which isn't at all what I'm looking for. The tasks I want to track are not time sensitive, so they don't have any date associated with them. They are also not repeatable.

The widget part is particularly important to me, because if the list of things to do is tucked away behind an app, or even not on the first page of my home screen, then I'll just forget about it. (Pretty sure I have ADHD.)

I'm also not too keen on having to setup an account or give any personal info away - but if I find an app that for sure can provide what I need then I'll probably cave on that. I just don't want to end up with a bunch of accounts for apps I won't even use.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Or maybe some search terms that might show something closer to what I'm looking for? Any help is greatly appreciated, and if you've read this far I hope you're having a wonderful day! 🙃

Not looking for me personally, so leaving the specs/features open, and generally interested in what people might recommend.

Imo there's almost always some surprising budget phones floating around to learn about. Only condition I might add is that preferably they're from 2022-2023, and if not, mention their release year to help know its version/update situation.

Do Alarms Turn Off Automatically After a Long Period of Time?

Here's the story. I went to a vacation overseas but still would like to receive sms. So I left my old phone back home with my sim and setup an sms forwarding stuff that automatically sends all my received sms to my email. (using Tasker and AutoMail since I already use those).

Unfortunately, I forgot to turn off my weekday alarm. I was wondering if the alarm turns off after some time that it wasn't dismissed (an hour? half a day? etc.) because I'm worried that my neighbor (we live in a condo) would go nuts if my phone is ringing 24/7 while I'm away.

Phone is on Android 10, LG G7 ThinQ, and the alarm app is Sleep As Android.

My Harman Kardon headphones and my sausage fingers don't go well sometimes - occasionally when switching off the ANC I accidentally put the headphones into pairing mode.

When this happens, a massive popup with a picture of my headphones appears on my phone screen, prompting me to connect via bluetooth, a bit like that iOS one that shows up when you hold your earpod case near the device.

Anyone aware what this popup feature is called? I'd like to ultimately switch it off - don't really like the idea of nearby bluetooth devices opening massive popups on my device, just because they're in pairing mode

It's actually compact, cheap, has oled, in-screen fingerprint reader, stock Android, NFC, Snapdragon SOC, supports GSI and has unlockable bootloader. Seems like a perfect phone (well except nonexpandable storage), so what's the catch?
