I've use Twilight for years and love the red filter for using my phone at night. But since getting an AMOLED screen it's started to frustrate me. The way Twilight seems to work means that black also gets a red tint. Previously this was great, but on amoled black is completely dark with no back-light that needs masking with red. So by shifting it red, Twilight is actually making the screen much brighter.

Tldr: Any apps that leave black as black, but give a red tint to all the other colors?

The last two I tried had some of the crappiest sounding audio I've ever heard out of a premium phone. I have a $100 wired headset I'd like to use.

Just playing around with the idea that I'd use an old phone as a 5g modem that I'd then attach to a regular router. Is this possible, smart/dumb?

KeepassDX. Is it a dead project? (raw.githubusercontent.com)

I really like using KeepassXC on a computer. On Android, I found KeepassDX to be the best client. But the last commit was from March and it confuses me. Do you think the project was abandoned or just a person took a break from development?

I have a broken Samsung Note 9 which suffers from a green flickering screen making it incredibly difficult to gain access to it in order to turn USB debugging on and transfer my old photos/data off it.

I've found a solution using Samsung Dex and a usb-c to hdmi cable, however due to having a pattern unlock and a glitchy screen, it's tricky to start up my phone with my pattern and now the auto factory reset option has enabled, leaving me with only 1 attempt to unlock my device before it factory resets.

I've managed to gain access to it/input my pattern multiple times when previously trying different options, however this time I haven't been as lucky.

Is anyone aware if the attempts reset over time if I left my phone for awhile, or will it remember I only have one attempt left, even after letting it drain and sitting for a couple of months?

Thanks!

I'd love to install Fdroid or even Google Play so I can get apps like Moshidon or Liftoff to work on my windows machine.

Ideas?

Is there a way to cast my phone screen to TV using some kind of Tasker plugin? I'm using screen cast to view one specific app on a big TV, but the screen mirroring stops whenever the wifi blinks, and I'd like it to reconnect automatically.

I have a family member who is currently selling the S22 Ultra for 500€ (just the phone). I'm currently rocking a Note 10 Lite with the latest One UI 5.1 and have no major complaints. Is this worth it tho? I've hear how "faulty" the S22 line is, specially the exynos variants.

EDIT: I think I found my answer for my phone at least: https://tabslite.com/

Hello!

I like to find chords for songs to play along with. Most of the time I end up at Ultimate Guitar, but I find their website, especially on mobile, to be hostile, distracting, and a general PITA, to the point that I pledge to never give that business a cent.

Given that, can anyone recommend any tools, sites, or apps to help find, collect, and view chords for songs?

I have some success with smartChord, but my most common actions require lots of fiddling through menus and even then I can't understand how to access saved chords, and every time I leave a song it prompts me about saving changes even though I made no changes, etc.

Thanks for any help!

Please do not say, scrcpy. I will cry. Scrcpy doesn't work for everyone and if it works now, something updates in my phone and the app stops working. Scrcpy got like 1000 issues. I spend hours figuring out the issue and still doesn't work. Tested with all the available options i.e. resolutions, renderer and encoder. They tell me your driver is outdated and your cable is not fast enough and all the non-sense. I also tried other apps and none of them work flawlessly.

After searching everywhere, I found douwan and what the hell. I can control my phone and mirror my screen with audio(plays on both pc and mobile) at 120 fps with a crappy usb cable with no lag at all. Actually I didn't wanted to install the tool because it's chinese, but at last I did. I found no tracker and loggers in the android app but my keyboard disappeared for like 20 minutes, idk how (maybe some other reason). I would buy the app but it wants me to pay $10 usd per year. I personally am not a big fan of subscription model.

The app is just great!! Works very very well for me. Using the free version and it's great but it has a large DouWan watermark covering half of your screen, at this point it's not even watermark.

Is there no other app that is free or with one time fee that doesn't require internet and works with usb cable.

Is there a way to cast from my phone to a first gen chromecast without using mobile data? I thought I could do this by downloading films to my phone and then stream to cc, but it seems to throttle my tethering data.

So I'm not sure if I'm understanding the way this works: I thought it would just cast from phone to tv - but it's using huge chunks of data for small films and my plan is limited.

Any advice on this or better ways to do this?

I'm transitioning to Bitwarden having been using a hodgepodge of Firefox and Google password management. I'm gradually trying to de-google anyway and I've got a bit frustrated with the Firefox Android password manager (fine on desktop, often doesn't offer to generate passwords on mobile).

Do people have any tips for how to get the most out of Bitwarden on Android? I've done these things:

  • Switched the main Auto-fill setting over (and enabled auto-fill in Bitwarden)
  • Disabled Firefox's password management
  • Turned off "Offer to save passwords" and "auto sign-in" in Google Password Manager
  • Turned off Privacy->Use auto-fill with Google

Is there anything else I should do? Is there a Bitwarden equivalent to everything you could do with the Google services? E.g. some apps said "Google Smart Lock" and they don't appear to do anything now.

Should I build LineageOS myself? (upload.wikimedia.org)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by FarLine99@lemm.ee to c/askandroid

I understand that probably there is little interest if you are a device ROM maintainer to embed a backdoor into it. But it's still possible. Lineage has a fairly simple and open build process. Should I do it on my own? Or should I trust the maintainers and not bother? What are your thoughts?

I'm looking a music player focused on local media (stored in my phone's SD card)

I used foobar2000, but I found creating playlist incredibly tedious so I changed to VLC, which is ok, it let me choose a bunch of files and add them to a playlist, but both share the same problem. When I change my SD card for a new one I have to start from the scratch and create all the playlist again, and that's a pain in the ass

So I'm looking for a audio player that let me easily export and import the playlist I create

This isn't an iOS vs. Android thread, although I'm aware this might come off that way to some. I've been using Android phones since the Galaxy S4 and at the time it felt like Android was far and ahead the best smartphone OS at the time. It was objectively better than iOS in 2010 in just about every metric apart from UI fluidity.

I'm not so sure about that any more. I still do prefer Android - the UI, the customizability, the ability to sideload apps, etc. That said, why is it that every single time Android gets a feature that truly makes the phone more usable, Google goes ahead and guts that functionality, only for Apple to actually give a shit about that feature a few years later and do it way better.

Just off the top of my head, I can't believe Google screwed up:

  • Android Beam
  • Google Now on Tap (not to mention all the things it did that Google Assistant can't)
  • Hangouts (not necessarily Android but it could have easily been better than iMessage)
  • Nearby Notifications
  • Android @ Home
  • Bump!

I get that Google as a company is out to make money, but do they really have to shut down any functionality that isn't directly generating revenue?

Does anyone know a good app locker? My requirements are:

  • fingerprint is required to open certain apps
  • no ads
  • FOSS (nice to have)

The purpose is to avoid having my kid open certain apps on my phone when he borrows my phone.

I like to keep a calendar widget open on my Windows desktop since I have lots of room for it, but I usually enter events on my phone since it's always with me. Is there an app combo that will sync? I can probably self-host if need be.
(I suspect this would be easier if I were running Linux on my desktop...)

Edit:
I should have mentioned that I don't like the interface of the Google Calendar app on Android, and I'd prefer something third-party.

I'm thinking about getting a phone just to use as a camera but I don't want to spend too much on it since that's basically my only use for it.

I also considered buying a low(ish) cost digital camera, but I'm planning on using the timer feature a lot. This means I really want a camera that is very "hand-holdy" so it can take good quality pictures without needing to see the screen/viewfinder/etc, which is why I thought a used phone might be a good option.

What are some cheap phones that have good quality cameras and camera software that don't necessarily need to have a strong processor or other flagship features?

Hello this is my first post on Lemmy, I have been disgruntled with Xiaomi's stock gallery app and wish to switch to an alternative that will not steal my data.

I’m currently an iPhone user and want to dip my toes back into the Android world. I used to run CyanogenMod before switching to iPhone, and I would intend to run LineageOS now. I’d also by interested in trying other Android distributions such as GrapheneOS. While not strictly Android, I’d also like to have a device to experiment with Linux based systems like postmarketOS. So broad OS compatibility is my main focus.

I’m looking for a more budget device and I don’t need the latest flagship specs. I’m also happy to buy used. Any recommendations would greatly appreciated.
