Search results being polluted by llm content is so annoying. As if all the SEO didn't do enough already to bring down overall web quality.

Recently I was searching for some technical guidance on how to do a particular thingy with the IPython coding framework and found just the right page. Except when I tried to run the examples, nothing worked because it was all made up! The entire site/domain was a collection of machine generated answers made to look like blog posts to common programming questions (which they probably scraped from some site with real human collaboration).

I can't even.

It's so annoying to have to discover the rules one rejected attempt at a time. Worse yet: sometimes you just get vague feedback a la "password contains illegal characters". I usually let KeePassXC generate a safe password for me but in that case I then have to manually permutate the different character classes (numbers, letters, spaces, punctuation, etc) until I find the offender. No good.

Librera Reader is a PDF // ebook reader for Android. It has a very smooth user experience and useful options. I used to have 5 or so different PDF readers installed and would pick and choose according to the task at hand but now I'm down to just 1.

A mandatory subscription is a much harsher barrier to the median user though.

We have a direct reference point for this: when Reddit began to charge for access to its API. 3rd party clients for Reddit like Apollo, RIF, Infinity, etc could have carried on by charging their users a low monthly fee in turn. The Apollo developer calculates 2.50 $/month as the additional cost to pass on. That is quite low for the potential utility you're getting if you compare it to even a cup of coffee yet still expensive enough for 3rd party apps to shut down.

Point is: many users may ultimately not care enough about the issues around censorship, botting, propaganda, hate speech or the persona of the CEO himself but once their wallets are affected its a different story.

In case your browser isn't completely locked down: there's also image editors that run as web apps like photopea.

If Pakistan becomes Bahrat India could rename itself to Pakistan. Full circle of confusion 🤯.

but the proposal does not yet spell out what constitutes a violation.

and this is not a coincidence. Authoritarian states love vaguely operationalized definitions like this because it's basically a blanko check to arrest anyone at any time. And it puts the populace into a fearful, fatalist mindset of "I could be arrested at any time for bogus charges, even if I did nothing wrong."

Man am I glad that I picked KeypassXC as my password manager some years ago. Super safe, easy to use, costs nothing, not dependant on internet/cloud, can export data to another app at any time, transparent because open source.

I'm using Syncthing to synchronize across devices which arguably took some fiddling to set up but I only had to fiddle once and haven't touched the configuration since; it just works automagically in the background.

Markup let's you label a link which is really nice for readability but can also be used to trick people into opening a different site from what they are shown. For example the link below suggests it takes you to a Mastodon instance but if you blindly tap it it will take you somewhere else:

https://mastodon.social/explore

Is there a quick and convenient way to check the actual URL behind a link? I know that it's possible to show a post as plain markup but in longer posts with potentially multiple links it's cumbersome to correlate what is what.

Ideally long tapping a link should show you the actual URL or alternatively you always get a small confirmation pop up with a simple tap (that's how it worked on RIF for instance).

Just sanity checking if I'm missing anything, else I might submit a feature request.

Edit: looks like this was added in a recent update. Get the newest version and it will let you long press a link to get an options menu.

Take a different approach: look for players also playing the same games as you. So find a community for your favorite games, be it on Discord, a website or here on the fediverse. Why would it matter specifically that they are using a steam deck? Steam Deck is treated as a PC if you are specifically worried about cross platform play. Conversely even finding others who also use a steam deck means little to you if they are into completely different games and genres.
