Something slightly similar happened to me a couple mos ago, I was attempting to install an alternative os on my phone, in order to do that I had to install xiaomis custom driver, unfortunately windows wouldn't let me put the driver for a phone onto an "unknown device type"

I'm almost 100 percent sure it's "free", and I think it's because they use themselves to advertise in their app and advertise their subscription, charge vendors fees, etc.
