When I moved to Lemmy from Reddit (about a year ago) and wanted to look for the equivalent of r/Ireland here, I was met with about 5 or 6 different communities (spread across various instances). You couldn’t really call any of them active, occasionally someone would post a link to a news article but there was no engagement.

Things have improved since then but I definitely agree with your point.

That was my thought initially as well. Just install the OS you want, how you want.

I can gladly say that I’ve never had this happen. I can’t imagine how awful it must be to drink a coffee and all you smell is some cologne

[-] governorkeagan 17 points 1 month ago

True but isn’t it safe to assume the OP meant desktop (considering the community)? There aren’t that many people using Linux phones.

I suppose since more than one response is related to mobile apps, it’s not a safe assumption that the OP intended for desktop apps/programs.

I saw an extension the other day that let you choose which mapping service you want to use when clicking a link to a map. You could click on a Google Map link but have it open in OpenStreetMap. If I find it again I’ll update here

Edit: Found it, MapSwap

Every Door is another good alternative to StreetComplete.

I’m thinking of the type of thing you wished you knew sooner. But if you have other advice, please share!

I’m a couple months (officially) into running a videography business and would love to use this post to share and help each other.

My Advice: I was into videography and doing it as a side hustle for almost a year but kept delaying registering myself as a business. If I could go back, I’d do that sooner.

I’m looking at getting myself a new laptop to replace my Dell Inspiron. I’ll be using it for some on the go video editing.

I watch TheLinuxExperiment and he seems happy enough with Tuxedo Laptops. I was looking at the TUXEDO Stellaris 16 - Gen5 - AMD but I’m open to other recommendations.

This isn’t something I really thought about but it’s so true. For the most part, we only use public transport to get to gigs in Ireland. You’ll have a couple that are further out (think small holdings/farms) but generally you’re close enough to a bus or train.

[-] governorkeagan 16 points 3 months ago

I’d love for better Public Transport routing to be added.

Currently working a remote job that I hate. Management takes micromanagement to a whole new level. They're based in the US so I get paid in Dollar but I also don't have any legal protection.

I've got a side hustle (videography) that I'm trying to build into my main gig.

My previous experience has been in tech (in various roles). Ranging from customer support/content moderation to management. I also have some more technical experience with automation.

My LinkedIn is up-to-date but I don't seem to be getting past the automated systems and to the interview stage

EDIT: My instance (lemdro.id) is having issues with lemmy.world so I don't always see the updates from lemmy.world straight away. It's generally about a 6 hour delay.

EDIT 2: I’ve created another account on Lemmy.World (@governorkeagan_@lemmy.world) so that I can interact here while my instance fixes the federation issue.

I’ve had the same when using a VPN on my PC. Have a look at libredirect, that would probably help with this issue.

TL;DR: I got a response from Reddit that basically says they’re not violating anything.

There was a post here 3 weeks ago that talked about the GDPR violations Reddit is committing.

reddit is telling it's future investors with recent news and more info on their IPO, that they're currently selling and looking to sell their user's data to companies wanting to train their LLMs, including Google.

I’m not sure of anyone else has gotten a response from them yet so I thought I’d share the email.

The Email:

It seems a little dead here.

It’s great seeing more engagement and activity here recently!

It seems like the mod isn’t active anymore and aussie.zone has offered to create a community for us - I think it’d be hilarious having the Irish community there.

More importantly though, I think having an active more (or multiple) is really important.

I’m not a mod (happy to help though) but I’d love to see what others think about the future of our community.

Something like the Brits have: feddit.uk / info

There is also an Irish Mastodon instance but I’m not sure if any of them are here.

Looking specifically for men but I’m open to all opinions. I’ve been doing some experimenting over the last 2 and a bit years, trying to find what works best for me. I’d love to get some opinions on what has worked for others.

stuff I’ve tried:

  • L'Oréal Men Expert (no complaints)
  • Bull Dog (not the biggest fan)
  • Neutrogena (no complaints either)
  • SkinCeuticals (borrowed from my partner who got some as a gift)

I’m in Europe if it helps

VPN is set to the country of the site/app.

Outlook got updated on my iPhone last night and now they want me to agree to having my data shared with 807 partners.

Important note: I don’t use outlook as my primary email provider. I use Proton with a custom domain but I keep outlook for some old emails.

I’ve seen people complain about companies like Meta and Google but then not make any effort to try and change…people can be weird sometimes.

I suppose there are a lot of factors at play, but still 🤷🏻‍♂️

Not sure if you’ve had the same experience but I had an American colleague ask me what I meant when I didn’t give the time in the 12hr format. The message was something like, “I’ve booked the meeting for 14:00”
