I've skipped making the bed for the last 30 years. I'm never in the bedroom unless I'm in bed, so having it be in any other state beyond "able to lay down on" is pointless.

To indicate that there isn't a direct mechanical link between the pilot and the flaps. There's wires and computers in between.

It's fly by wire, the pilot doesn't have direct control of the plane, which is the main issue here.

I think you missed the point. The demons are a personification of their inner urges. The arguments the kids have with them are a metaphor for how confusing and awkward it can feel to balance those urges with outwardly trying to appear "normal" at that age.

You're missing the point.

The metaphor relates to people deciding the colour of the bike shed instead of designing a nuclear power station. Because that's difficult, and having opinions on a bike shed looks like work, but it's distinctly unhelpful to the real work.
