I love making samples, so working up 8 x 8” / 20 x 20 cm samples of a lot of different stitches is fun for me.

There’s an old Bernat pattern that I have for an Afghan made of squares of very many different classic crochet stitches. It’s a great practice and skill building project.

If you choose a good palette of solid colour yarn, it works out nicely. If that kind of throw isn’t the kind of thing you like in your home, they’re always a gift or charity option.

Another excellent European product is Weleda from Germany.

We switched to that for lip balm because Burt’s Bees has soy in it and we had a family member with a sensitivity.

For hand and body cream, we’re just trying Nova Scotia Fisherman now. So far, after just a couple of weeks, it’s great.

For facial skin care, have been using Maritime Naturals for a couple of years. Excellent product.

Haven’t tried this one.

Can recommend BioVert. We’ve used their fragrance free laundry detergent for many years.

Nature Clean, another Canadian company, has oxy bleach and stain remover strips that we like too.

Ling is a tool for advanced learning in my experience.

Excellent at what it does though.

Camino is a Canadian brand brings in fair-trade and organic chocolate. Gluten-free also.

They have semi-sweet, bittersweet, unsweetened and vegan white chocolate chips.

Available widely.

Although you didn’t ask, there is a fantastic Canadian cake decorating brand that has sprinkles etc. Many are free of major allergens too.

Parksville is likely far more commercial and developed than you recall.

But the beaches remain.

Here are some suggestions with a kids lens:

Vancouver Island

  • get mid Island then over to the west coast

  • Parksville - large sandy beaches to dig in

  • ferry to Denman Island and then to Hornsby Island - fossils! https://hornbynaturalhistory.com/category/fossils/

  • Qualicum Beach - gravelly and lots of seniors, but a great place to see bald eagles picking up clams and oysters, dropping them to break them open and diving to eat.

  • Cathedral grove on Hwy to Port Alberni, accessible old growth forest

  • Alberni - old forestry interpretation site with a logging train in the Cherry Creek area

  • Drive to Tofino - an adventure in itself

  • Long Beach

  • whale watching

If you go to Vancouver, many of the classic stops are worth it

  • the Aquarium
  • Whale watching
  • Grouse mountain gondola and mountain top
  • Capilano suspension bridge and the fish hatchery and environs
  • Seabus
  • UBC museum of anthropology

Mapping and confirming the existence of a system larger than the world renowned Castleguard Cave system is the story here.

I think that may be US labeling still in use in Vermont and New York.

Canadian maple syrup hasn’t been graded that way for some time. We’re in a syrup producing region and get it locally from producers.

That seems to be regional.

Perhaps there’s some interprovincial barriers that we’re not aware of.

Growing up on the west coast, real maple syrup was a luxury.

Where we are now in Eastern Ontario, we buy it by the litre or even by the case. Our teens pour it freely all over their plates.

We use the medium or amber at the table, and the darkest we can get for baking.

Grade B is now called amber, I believe.

But whatever, the darker coloured syrup has more flavour and is better value.

The article is making a lot of a brief response by Waltke to a question following up on a mysterious pre-STLV tweet on the platform formerly known as Twitter.

That said, it strongly suggests that the Lamarr-class Voyager-A and the Doctor won’t be the only ties to other Star Trek series.

SUMMARY

Prodigy season 2 of Star Trek will connect with every other show in the franchise, including a possible tie-in with Starfleet Academy.

The upcoming season promises to be even bigger than season 1, with elements from all previous shows and interesting storylines.

The return of beloved characters, such as The Doctor and the USS Voyager-A, deepens the connection to Star Trek: Voyager and expands the sequel potential for the entire Star Trek universe. #SaveStarTrekProdigy.

On Mastodon @GoodAaron@GoodAaron@mastodon.social has tooted that Prodigy season two has ‘New ships. Familiar faces. Starfleet legends…’

It seems the pitch for a ‘new home’ for Prodigy rolls on.

What I still can’t figure is why all those ‘familiar faces’ weren’t sufficient to make Prodigy a fit with Paramount’s 3 F ‘Franchises, Familiar Faces & Fandoms’ streaming strategy.

Oh to be a fly on the walls of Paramount.

I often consider Screenrant clickbait, but kudos to Mark Donaldson for getting one of the first analyses of the beauty shots and the Doctor’s description from the Prodigy 2 x 01 sneak peak made available at STLV.

SUMMARY

The USS Voyager-A, unveiled in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, has undergone noticeable upgrades including increased staffing levels, advanced technology, and a larger shuttle bay.

The Voyager-A is a Lamarr-class science vessel, honoring real-world female scientist Hedy Lamarr, in line with the legacy of Janeway as a female leader and scientist.

While the Voyager-B and Voyager-J also feature upgrades and unique technologies, the Voyager-A stands out with its larger size and alternative warp drive.

Thanks again to all who joined in the creative fun on Canvas. It’s been great getting to cooperate with you in this midsummer enthusiasm.

Our efforts have stood up fairly well, despite a touch of final hours encroachment by an enthusiastically growing flag of Ireland and what seems to be an extension of the Trans flag. I guess a wordmark in violet was too great a temptation for them to resist interacting with.

Edited: TIL the colours of the Trans flag. My bad for not knowing them already

Didn’t see this coming. Prodigy EPs the Brothers Hageman have dropped a scene from season two, episode one.

And it’s on the official StarTrek.com site.

My spouse is muttering ‘makes no sense at all…’

I’m enjoying just having gorgeous new Prodigy animation to see. And those of you who love a great flyby of a new ship - get ready!

-- The SNW command delta is complete.

-- A user from another instance has taken the lead on an original Constitution-class.

-- Worf has a wordmark.

The fandom is making a good showing (if not as overwhelming as the My Little Pony space).

If you haven’t yet tried (or succeeded) in dropping a pixel, just head to the Canvas and login identifying your instance and username. You’ll be sent a PM with a confirmation code to authenticate your login.

Once in you can just drop pixels or join a faction. So far there are two active Star Trek factions: Quark’s (short name QUARK) and The Klingon Empire (short name KLINK) that you can join.

I have begun a Starfleet Delta, but haven’t figured out how to share the overlay template. It’s discernible enough as a delta now that others might wish to join in.

Canvas has groups called factions. In have created one called c/quark’s

There’s a pixelated drawing board for Lemmy now.

My own artistic skills are dubious, but with some help I could lay out the markers to start a Starfleet delta to stake out some Trek-positive space on the canvas.

Seth MacFarlane donated $1 million to The Entertainment Community Fund to help provide financial assistance for industry workers during the strikes.

Some interesting reflections on how the live action writers’ strike may improve the marketability of Prodigy to a new platform, as well as enable work to begin on a third season.

This would of course been a good reason for Paramount not to cancel and pull Prodigy when they have a gap in Star Trek releases ahead in 2024.

I always appreciate a callback to DC Fontana’s smart employment of writers for TASunder the exception that they could write one animated episode without violating the strike rules.
