The comparison to Christian fascists is interesting. I grew up in an evangelical cult and follow a lot of ex Christians on TikTok. A lot of these people, when they delve into politics, are unable to see anything but echoes of their own experiences with Christian fascists when talking about any kind of extremism. It’s understandable but I also don’t wanna dismiss people excusing structural violence under capitalism just because they have religious trauma. It’s something I empathize with a lot and simultaneously have no patience for because trying to get through to them often involves retraumatizing myself, too. Shit sucks, especially when I’ve put more energy than your average western leftist into deconstructing all the aspects of Christianity that are just baked into the culture here.

Hasan covered it in full and Destiny in turn covered Hasan’s coverage, resulting in Destiny rage quitting his stream multiple days in a row.

White boomers still have so much “old timey” racism rattling around in their heads just waiting for the opportunity to escape. My dad once

cw racismasked his black coworker over to help him move a couch and kept calling him “boy” which I’d never heard him call anybody. Like this guy came over to help out of the kindness of his heart and you talk to him like that?

He’s a lifelong dem and considers himself progressive, of course. Glad I don’t talk to him anymore.

Incognito Market also now has a Payment Status tab, which states ”you can see which vendors care about their customers below.”

More like “you can see which vendors will fold at the first sign of trouble”. There’s no way the people who just stole from you and are now extorting you are trustworthy enough for the ransom to be worth it. They have all the leverage and no reason to give any of it up. Aside from having a shit ton of incriminating evidence in their possession, but the ship’s clearly sailed on avoiding that, “whitelist portal” or no.

You know someone who uses gmail.com can email someone who uses aol.com? That works because email isn’t a service that exists on a single server somewhere. Instead, email uses a protocol, a way that computers have agreed to talk to each other. This works because both servers have their own copies of the email, which they do their best to keep in sync with one another.

Lemmy, Mastodon, Peertube, etc are all pieces of software that do the same thing (keeping multiple copies of something in sync) except instead of message threads, the thing it’s keeping in sync is social media posts.

You don’t need to know the specifics of how federation works because that’s getting into the specifics of how the servers have agreed to talk to each other. You don’t have to understand SMTP to use gmail. You just use it. Similarly, you don’t need to understand ActivityPub to use Lemmy (thank god). It just works.

Of course, by “just works”, I mean thousands if not millions of human hours have gone into making it work.

There was a moment in the Hasan stream where a chatter came in saying Destiny had studied for thousands of hours for this debate and that Hasan should address his points directly instead of making fun of him. Hasan laughed hysterically for like a minute straight.
