Happy new year,

Noticing a particular individual I keep blocking for ages now is constantly making the rounds to start new accounts on every instance possible so they can post a barrage of things to every single community there too and noticing I can stop this here by using filters.

I can block this "person" on other lemmy instances but don't see an option to just block the keywords - this user's name - and am grateful that we have these filters and many other features here and that piefed continues to evolve into something better.

Thanks you guys.

DATE/TIME: December 29, 2025 at 10:00 p.m.

INCIDENT: Temporary Closure Order Issued for San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, Mt. Baldy

LOCATION: Mt. Baldy

SUMMARY: To protect natural resources and provide for public safety, the U.S. Forest Service has issued a temporary closure and prohibition order affecting portions of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, including the Mt. Baldy Closure Area.

This Order is effective from December 29, 2025, at 10:00 p.m. until December 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

The Mt. Baldy closure begins at the intersection of Mount Baldy Road and Glendora Ridge Road in Section 30, Township 1 North, Range 8 West, San Bernardino Base and Meridian (SBBM); then continues due west to Section 22, Township 1 North, Range 8 West, SBBM; then continues due north through the summit of Iron Mountain in Section 3, Township 2 North, Range 8 West, SBBM, to Section 27, Township 2 North, Range 8 West, SBBM; then continues due east through the summit of Pine Mountain in Section 30, Township 2 North, Range 8 West, SBBM, to the Angeles National Forest congressional boundary in Section 28, Township 2 North, Range 7 West, SBBM; then continues south along the Angeles National Forest congressional boundary through the summit of Timber Mountain in Section 23, Township 1 North, Range 7 West, SBBM, to Section 27, Township 1 North, Range 8 West, SBBM.

“The tragic loss of life on Mt. Baldy and repeated rescue responses highlight how dangerous current conditions are, even for experienced hikers. Weather and terrain conditions remain extremely dangerous and unpredictable, posing a significant risk to both the public and Search and Rescue personnel. The temporary closure of Mt. Baldy trails is necessary to prevent additional emergencies and protect lives. The public is urged to respect the closure and avoid the area until it is safe to reopen.” Sheriff Shannon Dicus

Members of the public are required to comply with all posted closure signs and directions from Forest Service personnel. These temporary restrictions are necessary to reduce risk to visitors and to protect sensitive natural and cultural resources. A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department advises all subjects to refrain from traveling to or recreating in the Mt. Baldy area for the duration of the closure. Public cooperation is essential to ensure the safety of visitors and rescue personnel and to support ongoing public safety operations.

Three people died on Mt. Baldy but powerful Santa Ana winds have prevented helicopters from recovering their bodies, authorities said Tuesday.

On Monday at around 11:30 a.m., search and rescue teams responded to a request to find an injured man, 19, who had fallen 500 feet while hiking near Devils Backbone, a sharp ridge flanked by steep drops, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. A friend who’d been traveling with him had hiked to an area with cell service and provided GPS coordinates to rescuers, officials said.

A sheriff’s air rescue team spotted the injured hiker, along with two other unidentified people, from a helicopter but strong winds made it unsafe to carry out a rescue, the release states.

A Los Angeles County airship was able to hoist down an air medic to the bodies around 7:30 p.m., officials said. The medic confirmed all three people were dead but severe winds again prevented the helicopter from recovering them, they said.

An operation to recover the three bodies was underway Tuesday, the sheriff’s department said. The 19-year-old’s identity was not released, and the other two bodies have not been identified, authorities said.

Rising 10,064 feet above sea level in the San Gabriel Mountains, Mt. Baldy is instantly recognizable as the backdrop to the Los Angeles skyline. It’s also one of the deadliest peaks in the United States, in part due to its accessibility from such a large city. That proximity is a draw for both experienced hikers and those who are ill-prepared for the terrain and weather, which can be up to 40 degrees cooler than the basin below. Winter storms recently blanketed the mountaintop in snow.

There have been more than 100 rescues on Mt. Baldy since 2020, and 14 deaths, including the death of actor Julian Sands, who went missing on the mountain in January 2023. His remains were found nearly six months later.

That's one of the built-in potential things that's going to happen for most everyone there that day. Eyewitness descriptions of things that happened there just days before Julian Sands went missing a few years ago were traumatic. People can underestimate extreme conditions. On the old SoCal hiking subreddit, everyone would scream at people not to go unprepared and that it's critical to have proper mountaineering training and you don't go to high elevation during Santa Ana winds.
