I assume it's the Republic of the Congo for Germany, not the Democratic Republic.

[-] poVoq@slrpnk.net 8 points 7 months ago

Indeed I was also wondering about that. You are most likely correct given how huge the DRC is.

[-] AFC1886VCC@reddthat.com 6 points 7 months ago

Zaire was a cooler sounding name

[-] basxto@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 7 months ago

Yes, Republic of the Congo is only marginally smaller than the Federal Republic of Germany

[-] EunieIsTheBus@feddit.de 23 points 7 months ago

Damn, the mercator projection is really distorting. Seeing all these African countries which "look" pretty small are actually really large as shown by this map.

Just now realized how big Madagascar is.

[-] TheOctonaut@mander.xyz 15 points 7 months ago

Oh man please don't call Georgia non-European and then put them on Ireland. They get very noisy about this

[-] Mkengine@feddit.de 1 points 7 months ago

I often read this online, but why do they see themselves as a European country? I don't know any of their history, so for me they are just another Asian country.

[-] Devi@kbin.social 7 points 7 months ago

Madagascar is bigger that it looks

[-] peg@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

The Ukraine is bigger than it is (according to this map).

[-] Devi@kbin.social 1 points 7 months ago

It's just Ukraine, no 'the'. Was that a Russian annexation joke?

[-] Mkengine@feddit.de 2 points 7 months ago

Maybe English is not their native language, in German wie also say "Die Ukraine" instead of just Ukraine.

[-] Devi@kbin.social 1 points 7 months ago

Possibly, but it's also what Russia call the country in order to describe it as a region of Russia rather than a country and Ukraine finds it offensive, the Ukrainian embassies have requested it not be used.

Combined with this person referring to the parts of Ukraine currently under occupation I suspect they're using the offensive form on purpose.

[-] foofiepie@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago

Had no idea Madagascar was so big.

Mercator: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[-] Stormygeddon@startrek.website 5 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Here I was thinking about how Madagascar must be smaller than I thought if it's the same size as Ukraine. It looks so big on a map, like a quarter Australia.

I also thought Switzerland being the same size as Bhutan to be rather interesting, as they both have famous mountain ranges and tend to be a neutral while sandwiched between bigger powers.

Mercator protection strikes again

[-] realitista@lemm.ee 5 points 7 months ago

I'd like to see the same for US states.

[-] JeffKerman1999@sopuli.xyz 4 points 7 months ago

Uh I thought Philippines was bigger since there's like 200 million of them.

[-] NIB@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Is this map made by a turk? Why are half of the greek islands in Aegean Sea grey? Wtf.

[-] PostingInPublic@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

Congo is much bigger than Deutschland, what is this?

[-] Verqix@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago

My guess is you're thinking of the DRC, because Congo is pretty much equal in size.

[-] PostingInPublic@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Yeah you're right. Our news would use "Kongo" for the catastrophe and "Kongo-Brazzaville" for the country.

[-] TehWorld@lemmy.world -2 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

I’d love to see this but labeled per states in the USA.

[-] wieson@feddit.de 4 points 7 months ago

But not in this community

[-] lath@lemmy.world -4 points 7 months ago

Is this comparing the British Isles or the Bri'ish Empire?

[-] TheGrandNagus@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Neither, just the UK.

British Isles refers to the whole archipelago off the north-west coast of mainland Europe, and has thousands of islands, obviously dominated by Ireland and Great Britain.

The British Empire hasn't existed since 1997 when the UK gave Hong Kong back to China following a 99-year lease.

If you mean the UK and its overseas territories and crown dependencies, such as the Falklands and Gibraltar, then nah it doesn't include them. They're self-goverened and basically rely on the UK for military protection and not a huge amount more. It's not like the French model where overseas territories are literally considered part of France.
