Black Mirror is a fantastic series. If you haven't seen it, it's basically a modern day Twilight Zone (anthology series) but each episode is centered around some new scifi technology. Being an anthology series, you can watch the episodes in any order or skip whichever ones you want. A lot of the episodes are pretty dark, and many of them lean into cyberpunk themes. So which episode do you think is the most cyberpunk?

  • Nosedive, where every aspect of society is determined by how others rate you on a scale of 1-5?
  • Fifteen Million Merits, where everyone is locked in their own room and can only come out to ride a stationary bike all day?
  • Be Right Back, where an android is built with the knowledge of a dead person's social media posts?
  • Hated In The Nation, where whoever gets the most hashtag mentions is murdered the next day?

Here's a trailer for the series. You can watch it all on Netflix. Also, season 7 has been announced for 2025 and will feature a sequel to USS Callister (the Star Trek-like episode).

I would want to throw in White Christmas where they can trap your consciousness into a small device and enslave it to be your personal assistant. You can also be blocked from someone in the physical world and it would censor their life from you. And add in the casual torturing your consciousness to make it confess to crimes without your knowledge. Something about people being so casual about driving someone insane for making them relive a moment for years and years for a fun punishment after they got what they wanted feels like it would fit into a cyberpunk setting.

What is Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a science-fiction sub-genre dealing with the integration of society and technology in dystopian settings. Often referred to as “low-life and high tech,” Cyberpunk stories deal with outsiders (punks) who fight against the oppressors in society (usually mega corporations that control everything) via technological means (cyber). If the punks aren’t actively fighting against a megacorp, they’re still dealing with living in a world completely dependent on high technology.
