I'll sell them the use of it, but I reserve the right to remove their access at any time for no reason whatsoever.

[–] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago

How much will they give me for a video of me tossing it into a trashcan?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 94 points 3 days ago

$1200.

I know what I got, Sony!

[–] 64bithero@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Sony can go fuck themselves

[–] cenariodantesco@lemmy.zip 31 points 3 days ago (1 children)

similar strategy as Xbox, drain these consoles from consumers now in preparation for the rental future they want console-heads to have, don't fall for it

[–] ComradeMiao@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

With such a ridiculous offer, I can only believe you are right.

Desolder all the VRAM chips then sell it to them. They never said it needed to be in working condition.

[–] r3tr0_97@ani.social 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

And the APU die, then resolder it on another board, sell the old one, and you got 2 PS5s (wait, not really though)

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 19 points 3 days ago

I'll buy someone's PS5 for $401 if they're not using it.

[–] luckybart@lemmy.sdf.org 37 points 3 days ago

In this economy?

Double it and we'll talk.

I can't speak to his experience but they've both removed games and movies from my library and their refund policy is atrocious even by digital store standards.

If you download one single bit of data it's no longer refundable, and guess what starts automatically?

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

If I had an unused PS5, I wouldn't sell it for 400 Dollars. That's basically a scam. Also in the future the unused console has a higher chance to be hackable. On Amazon Germany the Playstation 5 costs 650 Euros and higher into the thousands range. If Sony wants my imaginary PS5, then they have to pay me virtually more than 400.

[–] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 3 days ago

I'd bite if they also buy all my games with it for the price I paid for them.

[–] warmaster@lemmy.world 36 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Are they planning to resell them to AI data centers? 🤣

[–] SomeRandomNoob@discuss.tchncs.de 51 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They clean them, reset them and sell the for $600

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Plus get rid of unpatched systems as well. For Sony its a win the less hackable consoles are out in the wild.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

*fewer

Not only is it gramattically more correct, but "less hackable consoles" suggests the consoles in question are more resilient to hacking. I doubt that's what you meant given the context

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago

Thanks for the correction. Yes, that was poorly worded by me. Off course I meant "fewer", which is I think understandable. But still someone reading could be confused not realizing my poor English. I don't know if my reply sounds sarcastic, but that is not my intention. I fully acknowledge the mistake and approve the correction.

[–] PP_BOY_@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I just about would, if not for the fact that I don't even want to give Sony the benefit. My Black Friday PS5 Disc purchase was the biggest financial mistake of my adult life.

6 years later and still no games. PS6 teasers and still not a single game on PS5. It's unprecedented. At least I got to replay Dishonored without having to dig out my PS4 lol backwards compatibility was the only selling point for me. Now that I've got a Shield in the living room, it's done nothing but collect dust as an ugly eyesore.

[–] viral.vegabond@piefed.social 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The jailbreak scene is looking pretty hot right now though, depending if you're on the right firmware and haven't updated recently.

[–] Crankenstein@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Yea. Unplugged mine since it is still on 13.6 and am figuring out how to go about it. Don't know where or how to get games and stuff though.

[–] Dariusmiles2123@piefed.social 2 points 3 days ago

Modded Warfare on YouTube has a lot of info about it.

I was in your situation, but I upgraded to 14.2 since it was preventing me from playing the updated version of a game I really enjoy.

I hope I won’t regret it, but having a Playstation 5 and not using it seemed like a waste.

[–] viral.vegabond@piefed.social 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Eh, just watch some PS5 jailbreak videos, you'll get it figured out. Someone else may have more direct info. 👍

[–] Crankenstein@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

The actual jailbreaking part isn't what I'm having difficulty with. It's pretty straightforward. It's what to do after it's jail broken. Like where tf do I get games from?

[–] hal_5700X@sh.itjust.works 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The PS5 has more controllers than games.

[–] sys110x@aussie.zone 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It does have games though? I must be missing the joke - PS5 has 1128 PS5 native games

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_5_games

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The PS5 has 25 exclusives (only on ps5) according to Wikipedia. However, a few of the games listed have a release date in the future and a handful more are re-releases or not full games. Going through the list, it looks like less than 10 that have already released, aren't a remake, and are full games.

So if you're just going off the game library, that's a harder sell. Obviously there are other reasons to buy a PS5, but the benefits of consoles over PCs seems to be getting smaller and smaller.

[–] sys110x@aussie.zone 11 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Is there a wish for more exclusives? When I was younger we complained about too many exclusives. Playing Game A needed Console A, Game B needed Console B, leading to needing a PS2 to play Silent Hill while needing an Xbox to play Halo. The dream was to only need one console and have them all compatible so you and your mates could all share experiences. Then your hardware choice would down to slight hardware advantages, innovation, aesthetics, and personal preference instead. Do I get a PC because I like sitting at the desk with a mouse? Do I get an Xbox because of the media theatre aspect? Do I get a PS2 because of the cool looks and software? It's odd seeing commentary about there not being enough exclusives 15 years later.

The comment I replied to said there's more controllers than games, and the parent comment was that there's no games. That's what confused me, not that there's no exclusives.

[–] emeralddawn45@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The only reason to specifically choose a ps5 if you already have a PC or are going to get one anyway, is for the exclusive games. If a game is on PC and PS5 what possible reason would there be to choose to play it on a device that's more restricted, more locked down, not upgradable, and is collecting all your data and constantly trying to lock you into a subscription and sell you things? That's why exclusives are relevant. Nobody wants to use the PS5. They do it because in some situations it's the only choice. But with the PS5 that justification never even really materialized.

[–] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

Exclusives aren't the only reason to buy a game on a PS5 (or any console) if you own a PC. The other big reason is that you can buy a physical game that you can then lend to a friend or family member or later give or sell to someone else. Don't worry, Sony is eagerly removing that reason from the equation. The only other reason that has lead to me buying a game for PS5 instead of PC is Denuvo or Linux compatibility.

[–] zlatko@programming.dev 2 points 3 days ago

The regular buyer (kids and their parents who don't know better) are often drawn by the exclusives specifically.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Honestly, I think it's really the rate in which big games are being released tied up with console exclusives that has people upset.

If I'm going to just play indie games there isn't much reason to use a PS5 for that (or maybe that's not the type of games most people care about).

I know in my household we talked about getting a PS5, but the only game that's out that I slightly care about is Wolverine. Not only did it just get okay reviews, but it's not worth $700+ to play a single game.

God of War or Ghosts of Tushima might have been tempting, but they're now on PC, where I won't have to worry a out backwards compatability in the future.

Depending on your specific disc drive being able to read CDs or not it is now possible to run any PlayStation software from any generation off of the disc. If you have the disc drive that doesn't read CDs that only discounts PS1 and some PS2 releases but an external CD drive can solve that.

Not to mention all the other emulators for pretty much every system that are all currently in a good place or being actively developed the PS5 is now the ultimate device in terms of backwards compatibility.
