Do some rich people only wear designer clothes? Like, is everything they have in their wardrobe designer, even down to their socks and underwear?

It's a question I've always had.

To clarify, I mean both old money and new money, from high-level millionaires to billionaires. And when I say designer, I mean across the entire spectrum. Not every designer brand is loud and famous like Gucci. What I mean is, do these wealthy people ever buy clothes, underwear, socks, etc., from stores like Walmart, Target, and other regular retailers, or is everything in their wardrobe designer?

I want something that is tailored and without company names or logos. That would be tacky and free advertising that I do not want.

It has to be intentional in style, well built not single stitched or anything, those last two seasons. Well built lasts forever, and will always be repairable. Same for shoes.

At some point you have all the basics and you only "need" to add accesoires for each season and occasion.

Threads like this read a lot different when you're hungry.

One of my old CEOs was a millionaire. He walked around in Jeans and t-shirts. I thought it was relatable. Until someone told me that he wore 500 designer jeans and 200 t-shirts....cuz he can afford it

[–] ryrybang@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

The richest person I know walks around in a 15 year old pair of these https://www.newbalance.com/pd/mx608v5/MX608V5-35113-PMG-NA.html?dwvar_MX608V5-35113-PMG-NA_style=MX608WN5

And similarly old generic jeans.

I don't know how rich they are, but in the $50-100m range if I had to guess.

[–] moonshadow@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 hours ago

How come you ain't rob em yet?

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Nope. My mother's family is rich, they wear clothes tailored for them. Underwear and socks come from C&A or somewhere else cheap, though. They think designer wear is common and think people who wear stuff like that are beneath them.

Yeah, they're stuck up.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 9 points 1 day ago

Clothes as a signifier of wealth has dropped over the last quarter of the 20th century as the ability to dress down at work was a form of displaying power at work. For the insanely wealthy, they but designer clothes, but they are buying more for the better materials and workmanship; branding on the clothes is understated and can usually requires an education by the people looking at it.

There are some brands who are for the aspirationaly wealthy who do display their brands more conspicuously, but they aren't for the billionaires.

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Did you know that French king Louis XIV did not even dress or undress himself? He had servants for such tasks.

[–] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 4 points 23 hours ago

Some regailia is complex that it was physically impossible for someone to put it on unassisted.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

I believe Louis wasn't the only one in history doing that

rich people aren't all the same. some do, some don't.

what's weirder is the poor people who do this, and go into debt to do so, so they can feel/look rich.

my sister has a net worth of something like 50 million, and shops at Target and doesn't have designer anything. but she grew up poor and isn't into fashion or luxury goods. but she would not consider herself rich at all. to her rich is people who have yachts or charter flights.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

I knew a lady who owned a solid chunk of downtown Pensacola. My ex-wife and I would see her and her daughter at $.99 Sundays at Goodwill.

My first wife had a good friend who was filthy rich by her husband, still worked as a nurse and, like me, loved to brag about how cheaply she had scored her shoes and such. Saw her outside their beach condo one afternoon at Mardi Gras. She wasn't dressed fancy, but I bet she had a cool $50K in jewelry. Nothing ostentatious! More like, "That woman isn't wearing anything fake."

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ummm $50M is yacht and charter flight levels of rich. I guess she just doesn't know it somehow.

[–] AskewLord@piefed.social 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (4 children)

It's not. Chartering over 10K per hour, so a cross-country flight is easily well over 50K. She flies business class and pays like $5K. She can't afford first class, first class alone is like 10K. You really don't know how much those things cost. A tiny yacht is 1.5 million, a medium sized one is closer to 10 million.

You're an order of magnitude off. She doesn't have $50million in cash. It's mostly real estate and stocks. She lives in a 5 million dollar house, but a few miles away people live in houses that are worth like 50 million or more. Bill Gates house is a few miles from them, and it's worth 150 million.

But please lecture me more about how you know more about her life than I do.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I never said I knew more about her life, but please keep putting words in my mouth.

A $50M net worth should absolutely be bringing in $2M/year income which is plenty to charter flights and buy yachts. I never said it had to be chartered trans Atlantic or that it had to be a super yacht.

But sure I guess your poor sister just can't swing the money to fly first class with her measly little $50M. How embarrassing for her. You should clip some coupons for her to get by.

I mean how much do you think you need? Seriously.

[–] AskewLord@piefed.social 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

You know nothing about money. You sound like someone would sell their house to buy a Ferrari and wonder why they are broke a few years later.

Asset value appreciation is not income. You seem to be under a total delusion she is making 2 million in cash a year. She isn't. They make like 500K in income, and after taxes it's like 300K. Doctors make more than her and her husband do. Do you think a doctor chartering flights?

You are talking about people who have $500 million in assets.

By your logic I should be driving a Lambo, not a Civic.

[–] Aneb@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

How did $50 mil become not so opulent? Thats fifty million dollars. I have 2k in savings, I'm thinking about busing instead of flying. Whatever level I'm picking for airlines is $400-500 nowadays one way.

[–] AskewLord@piefed.social 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (2 children)

Would you regard a 1950s run down shack of a house as opulent? I doubt it.

Those cost 3 million dollars where my sister lives. What you are thinking of, big mansions, cost more like $50 million. You are off by a order of magnitude.

My shitty 100 year old two bedroom apartment is worth 700,000 dollars. That doesn't make it opulent. It's just the basic cost of living.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

My partner and I dream of affording a $1Mil house on a shared income, you really need to rethink what you consider (or don't consider) wealthy

[–] moonshadow@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 hours ago

Brother I consider living indoors opulent, and it sounds like your whole family is late for a guillotine appointment. Talking about how your "shitty" home is "only" worth three quarters of a million dollars is disgustingly entitled and ungrateful, I'm really hoping you aren't real

[–] BenevolentOne@infosec.pub 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

People who haven't had the opportunity to see it don't realize that wealth distribution is fractal, and the more money you have, the more obvious this is.

I like to think of it in terms of stack of 300X (I could buy your year in a day's interest) and work your way up.

$1

$300

$90000 < if you're reading this post, you are probably around here.

$27000000 < This is the rich person in the post above, notably still in the middle.

$8100000000 < Private jets, billionaires, there are a few thousand of these.

$2.43E12 < Musks, Bezoses, etc.

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 4 points 1 day ago

And the prices of those yachts doesn't take into account the cost of ownership - slip fees, fuel, maintenance, etc.

Owning it costs a lot more, which is true of so many things.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No. Just the wannabees and the posers.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

They wear designer stuff, it's just that most of us can't tell. Dude on YT (Chasing Beauty) does great shorts on fashion history and the differences in quality. Sounds boring, very fascinating.

An example: I still remember a young women I saw one day in Franklin, TN. She was pretty enough, in a normal sort of way, but something about the plainness of her clothes and her poise reeked of class and wealth. I can't describe it, but after watching that guy on YT, I have a better understanding of why a T-shirt can cost $200 and what the differences are in that and a $10 T-shirt. She had the $200 blouse, yet it was plain as could be.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

People have different tastes. Some wear brands, while others have clothing made for them and schedule measurement/fitting events.

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do some rich people only

yes.

do these wealthy people ever

yes.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago

Only when there's illegal street racing in the evening.

[–] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Depends on what kind of rich. If you're trying to show off and FEEL rich you're a lot different from just casually rich. Most of them aren't. Plus also, if you're rich, you generally buy quality, which isn't the same as what the plebs think of as "brands"

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

There's also vastly different levels of quality within a brand. A Gucci belt at the outlet store is not the same leather you get from Gucci at Saks, and the quality goes even higher in exclusive stores.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago

For a given value of rich, sure.

But you'd be surprised how many aren't brand hounds, or don't go fancy designer when they are.

You won't see anyone that's wealthy going you Wal-Mart, but they may send someone out to get something there. But some of the merely rich will go into a store like that if they need something quick.

I would say that the ones I worked for (maybe a double handful) and their friends that I had communication with were snobby as hell overall, but usually in odd ways. Not necessarily a Gucci kind of thing, but maybe ll bean for almost everything. One patient I had pretty much owned a bank, and that was him and his wife.

[–] mimic_kry@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Rich people don't buy clothes like regular people, they have personal tailors. That or they have famous taliors custom make their clothes.

They don't shop anywhere, otherwise they'd be seen by the peasants. Any shopping they'd need done is also probably done by servants. Or slaves, wouldn't put it past them.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I take it you've never known anyone with more money than yourself? Here in the American South, you can't tell the rich apart. They shop at Goodwill and the guys on the beach look like drunk homeless people. That lady and her daughter at Goodwill? She owns half of downtown Pensacola.

[–] mimic_kry@sh.itjust.works 1 points 19 hours ago

Mmm, that's not the kinda rich I'm talking about. Millionaires don't count, only 200bil+. The people who own senators and have custom built fortresses.

Sure millionaires are rich, but they still, as you say, have to shop normally. Just on the high end of normal.

Also I was friends with an heir from MGM. I'm pretty sure you're projecting.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Not true. Some of them WANT to be seen on Rodeo Drive or similar.

[–] PorchGoose@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The quiet luxury is pretty darn close. There are now brands that are known as "quiet luxury" brands, but that's another attempt to let less wealthy people feel wealthy by now buying these quiet brands. Searching quiet luxury and reading up on it will probably give you the most information.

But they wear brands without logos, without obvious tags. They buy high quality, classic neutrals that never go out of style. They have their own tailors so nothing is "off the rack". Either extremely quiet brands, speciality boutiques that no one can just walk in uninvited, or bespoke from a tailor. They probably order socks and underwear from those ultra quiet brands too. Even the $30-45 per pair high end underwear from places like Nordstrom are brands they would probably never touch.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Depends where you draw the line on something being designer a bit, but if we're including luxury brands in general, then essentially yes in most cases.

If someone cares about their appearance and they have enough wealth to not need to worry about economising, they will be wearing something close to the best versions of a given item of clothing that they (or their stylist) can get their hands on.

It doesn't have to be flashy (and increasingly the goal is to not be flashy), you can spend hundreds, even thousands on a plain black t-shirt. If someone wealthy wants a black tee, it's almost certainly gonna be one of those and not one from a supermarket.

Is the difference in value equivalent to the difference in quality? No of course not, the prerequisite is not needing to worry about the cost. There's no value to them in shopping around for a deal and/or compromising due to cost, they just want the best available, and that's it.

Now there's the demographic of wealthy people who genuinely don't give a shit what they look like, and instead dress like eccentric geography teachers, but even then, I don't think they're getting their clobber from a Walmart.

Edit: typo

[–] huquad@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't wear designer clothes. Not only are they impractical, but they really go against my cash flow constraints.

[–] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Cash flow constraints? I thought you were rich!

[–] huquad@lemmy.ml 1 points 22 hours ago

Don't get it twisted, I'm a multi trillionaire. Once the check comes in the mail, ill be golden.

[–] TheFogan@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

from what I've heard there's a style of sorts called "quiet luxury". Basically no huge branding, look simple, but more of a timeless look. Look up Celine or "the row". typical clothes that look simple, have a major reputation among old money people, and yeah looking at thousands for basic clothes that... well quite simply don't stand out.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Watch Chasing Beauty on YT. Never heard the term but aside from fashion history, he talks about luxury quite a bit. Sounds boring, but he's fascinating with his research and presentation.
