I have no idea how Americans can stand being represented like this. It's one long continuous series of insults heaped upon injury.

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 62 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Many of us can't and have been working hard to try and change it. Unfortunately, we didn't spend our money on enough guns and ammo to nuke a country and aren't backed by more wealth than the gdp of some nations.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 24 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I dare say France has - once again - recently demonstrated that you don't necessarily need either of those things.

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 50 points 2 days ago (2 children)

And once again, comparing France to America is a dumb take ignoring major differences in basically everything about the countries.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

You know what? I agree. There really is no point in comparing the two.

[–] kyTdKZx9PtDQ9e56u06@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Right. Compare something more obvious so people can stop making the same dumb comparison.

France vs Texas

Metric France Texas Comparison
Total Area ~551,500 km² ~695,662 km² Texas is 26% larger
Population ~68.5 million ~31.7 million France has 2.2× more people
Population Density ~124 people/km² ~45 people/km² France is 2.8× denser

I was looking it up a couple days ago - in France if you lived in the furthest large city from Paris, Nice, it would take you 8.5 hours by car or 6 hours by public transit to get to Paris. You could get off work at 4p on Friday, swing by home and be to Paris by midnight, protest for a day and half, and then be home in time for dinner on Sunday. It'll cost $100-200 USD each way, and you can buy it as a single ticket.

No let's look at Texas - The capital is Austin, which is more central North/South, and similarly offset east/west, aka it's slightly closer to the center of the landmass vs Paris. If you live in the furthest away large city, Amarillo, it is 8 hours by car or 19 hours by public transit. A city bus to the transit station, then 3 different city to city buses to get to Austin. The cost is $200-250 each way. By the time you get to Austin, you need to call your boss and let them know you won't be in on Monday, and that's if you turn around and leave immediately.

America is Fucked.

Yeah, France actually has a sense of self worth among the populace.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 24 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Or, you know, the fact that France is smaller, has less people, more social safety nets, and doesn't have a militarized trigger-happy police force.

[–] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Don't forget the US has the nasty combination of a sizeable demographic of right-wing gun owners who'd love an excuse to use them, alongside news media who'd frame the protesters as an evil force that's burning down entire cities.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's just unfortunate that most likely most of those in the US who do have guns are also Trump supporters, or at least I imagine that to be true.

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago (4 children)

They're just the ones that like to brag about it and make it part of them.

To most a gun is a tool, nothing more. You don't see carpenters running around bragging about their Stanley Fatmaxx 20 ounce hammers.

France is not the US. The US frequently kills protestors, even peaceful ones, and has literally bombed entire city blocks in the past. That's not to mention the vast legal, demographic, and geographic differences.

The US government is depraved. It is not comparable to France.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Imagine growing up raised by idiots. In a region where you're surrounded by idiots at all times. Then toss in constant propaganda on TVs everywhere you go. Then all the idiots around you telling you to download apps that only idiots use to repost propaganda fed to them by evil people who know they can manipulate you and your friends and family because you're all idiots.

That's basically how we are where we are.

[–] lobut@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago

Bread and circuses. They're running out of bread though, so just trying to lean on circuses.

You mean with the best president ever who has done the best things ever and everybody says so? /s

You must be speaking Calvin 'silent cal' Coolage who had the capacity to keep his yap shut for more than 30 whole seconds at a stretch.

"Flirty" is an inaccurate way to describe what and how he spoke about her. It was sexual harassment, live on stage.

But of course the Daily Mail would think that's how you flirt with people.

When someone posts Daily Mail, it's worth reminding that regardless of the truth of the article, the source is absolute shit. They breathlessly report every little thing like it's the end of the world, and ignore the real issues. It's a distraction.

Enjoy it if you want, but i'm going to protest its posting every time I see it.

Not only that, but this is basically just an article laughing about sexual harassment.

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Some of these comments are bordering just as mysoginist as trump, just with different politics. Way to go, Lemmy.

[–] CorrectAlias@piefed.blahaj.zone 9 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Lemmy does have a serious misogynist problem. It's a male dominated space with a lot of users from other, already misogynistic places, which creates a heavy concentration of it.

A lot of the misogyny isn't acted upon, either, because mods and admins here sometimes share the same views. It's no wonder women don't feel comfortable here. The few that do stay, such as Velma, have to constantly battle misogyny. It's fucking gross.

[–] Stormy@thelemmy.club 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The world has a serious misogynist problem.

[–] CorrectAlias@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Absolutely. It's just interesting how a lot of people here can call themselves leftists and in the same breath say something misogynistic and get away with it.

This is noise. Ignore it and focus on bigger things.

[–] NihilSineNefas@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago

Keys are being jangled that have never been jingled before

I find the biggest indicator of this is the "Daily Mail" logo in the top left.

Idiocracy isn't supposed to be an instruction manual, but apparently conservatives are already that fucking dumb and we're stuck in this car with them falling off the cliff.

[–] UpAndAtThem@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

'My closing argument is NICE ASS!' -Totally definitely not a creepy rapist.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Well his closing argument in 2024 was Haitian immigrants eating pets and concepts of plans and it worked.

[–] weps@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago (2 children)

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago (11 children)

Her thigh isn't even making contact with the chair due to being elevated by those inflatable pillows she's sitting on. 🤮 You think she has any feeling through those things? Looks absolutely revolting to me. Better a flat ass than this monstrosity. (And I'm a phat azz lover.)

This isn't even the first time conservatives have elected a dumbfuck celebrity to the presidency. And we're 0 for 2 on fucking stopping them from doing it. This shithole needs to get its act together.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

She's kissing Trump's ass because she's angling for a pardon for her husband and brother.

[–] deft@lemmy.wtf 6 points 2 days ago

For being diddlers right?

[–] xc2215x@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Trump talks about asses so much now.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago
