Hunter Foster, the Mississippi police officer who shot into a vehicle and killed one-year-old Kohen Wiley, has resigned from the Senatobia police department. Earlier this week, Mississippi’s attorney general, Lynn Fitch, announced that the shooting was “justified”.

The Senatobia board of aldermen accepted Foster’s resignation on 21 October and the resignation took effect immediately. Foster was placed on leave on 16 June, days after the 14 June shooting. Yesterday, the Mississippi department of public safety released body-camera and surveillance footage from the shooting, at a Walmart in Senatobia, during which the toddler died in his mother’s arms after being shot.

In the footage, Foster is seen running out of a Walmart with other officers after an employee said shoplifters were fleeing. Officials have alleged that Kohen’s mother and a friend stole diapers from the Walmart; neither woman has been charged.

Within seconds of leaving the store, Foster aimed his gun at a vehicle in which Kohen, his mother and another woman were. Three shots were fired, all from Foster’s gun, though several officers drew their guns. Foster hit and injured the driver of the vehicle, and killed Kohen.

At a press conference on Thursday, the prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Kohen’s family, called for a federal investigation into the shooting. He is also calling for Foster to be decertified, which would prevent him from serving as a police officer anywhere else.

“The bullet that killed Kohen Wiley was not justified,” Crump said. “This decision sends a message that a Black baby boy, his life, is not as valuable as the white diapers that he is wrapped in.”

Kohen would have turned two on 1 November.

Further investigating has revealed that Foster had at least two complaints filed against him by two other coworkers for making racist jokes and comments. Those two coworkers later resigned because no action was taken on those complaints. Foster’s police chief (I believe it was the chief; Foster’s boss at any rate) ~~has also resigned and was found to be~~ was fired for making racist comments and using the N-word in text messages to coworkers.

Shut the whole fucking department down. The police as an organization in the US was founded to hunt down black people (escaped slaves), and they have never forgotten that mandate.

Killer cops should have more consequences than moving to the police force next door.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 35 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Kohen's family's lawyer, Crump, is pushing to have this officer decertified (or whatever the official term is) so he's unable to be a police officer in any other area ever again.

I hope he succeeds.

[–] MightEnlightenYou@lemmy.world 31 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

So certification buys you one child murderer get out of jail free card

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

one child murderer get out of jail free card

per police department.

[–] Beacon@fedia.io 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No, as described, decertified means you can't work as a cop anymore in any department.

[–] rainwall@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Certification is all state based. He can just move a couple hundred miles and work as a cop in a new one.

[–] StepUp2DaStreets@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Another one of those pesky little oversights where congress isn't anyone near passing anything on, AFAIK. Maybe in 4-5 years if we're lucky.

[–] LemmyUser0909@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Crump is the worst choice imo, the guy is an ambulance chaser. Get a better lawyer.

[–] Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Fuck em Crump will win millions maybe he is a piece of shit but fuck that PD and make the city go bankrupt -- money is the only thing these creatures understand

[–] LemmyUser0909@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 week ago

Crump is a liability and has no status. I would go Morgan and Morgan first and thats pretty bad.

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I hope the Cop goes against the wall

[–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 33 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Cops have an overinflated sense of importance, killing somebody over diapers WTF

[–] Swemg@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You can see them running like they're bout to caught the most wanted criminal. Fuckheads need to rethink their shitty little life

[–] Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works 21 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

[–] kunaltyagi@programming.dev 2 points 1 week ago

Those ladies should have made better life choices before the policeman made choice of their lives

[–] CptOblivius@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago

[–] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago

Looks like ICE just found a new recruit

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Walmart and that particular employee must feel pretty darn good about themselves! /s

Remember kids, if you see someone stealing food or baby supplies, no you didn't. We all pay enough taxes to deserve basic needs. The fuckers at the top are using it all to fund pedos and genocide.

USA feels like a place with no class unity

They'd sell their "own" for a chance at employee of the month and a 10 dollar gift certificate

[–] LewdLemon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

USA feels like a place with no class unity

Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.

[–] 20cello@lemmy.world 19 points 2 weeks ago

He should resign from life

[–] Mobiuthuselah@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Over four months. Resigned because the news made it public. Which station will he pop up at next?

[–] Garbagio@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

"Resigned" is such a weird way to say "changed precincts."

Also funny that they decline to note that the fucker has been on PAID leave since June

[–] kunaltyagi@programming.dev 2 points 1 week ago

The bumfuck suburb 10 mins over

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Finland: Far-right party holding a racist "protest"; Over Quadruple come to counter protest and punch some Nazis.

Spain: landlord tries evicting old lady after unjustly raising rent to a point he knew she can't afford; Mass protests country wide.

France: Students get ignored about their schools not being repaired and extreme heat due to no AC and climate change; Riots and Flames.

USA: Woman stealing diapers for her baby has her baby murdered, murderer and department face no consequences, politicians just straight up saying killing the literal baby is fine over theft of diapers;

Nothing.

Justified, my hairy cracked cracker ass

That was gross negligence. It was shitty marksmanship, shitty decision making, and abhorrent policy backing it up. Other officers didn't fire, and that right there is proof that a sane person could have made a beter decision under pressure because if other cops are showing restraint, you sure as fuck know that a regular person would think twice, maybe three times, before daring to unload that many rounds into a vehicle with anyone other than a violent, fully identified target in it.

That should have been treated like a hostage situation, not a fucking shooting gallery. Zero reason not to back the fuck off, cool down, and get air support to follow the suspects safely and calmly.

Fml they just straight up murdered a baby dozens of shots fired from the side of the vehicle, insanely beyond the pale

Hunter Foster fired at vehicle during a shoplifting call at a Walmart, killing one-year-old Kohen Wiley

Nominative determinism?

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hunt them down and kill them.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

That is very extreme, shoplifters do cause some harm, but hunting and killing them are way too extreme.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago

I mean the officer

[–] liuther9@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You should stop trying to be funny

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Stop?

Nah, but I'll concede that this wasn't as funny as I thought when I had just woken up.

[–] L0rdMathias@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

False. I've been up a while and just saw it. It's still funny.

[–] Denfa@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

He should be arrested

And will get hired on at some other police department elsewhere.
