Persimmon Harvest (lemmy.world)

Stand in awe of the full harvest from our persimmon tree!

This is the first year it’s produced so we are very excited. I know what you’re thinking. We harvested too soon. But my wife actually likes them still crunchy and we have to harvest before the deer get to them…

Put 'em in a paper bag with a banana and they'll be ripe in no time!

I don't think I've ever tried these before. They look yummy!

I tried to get some wild persimmons to make some wine, but the birds got to them first. Oh well, I'll try again next year.

Wild persimmons are tricky since they have to be sooo ripe to be palatable.

These are really under-ripe. Do they still taste good when they're so green?

They will continue to ripen off the tree.

As far as tasting good it depends a lot on the variety. There are astringent varieties which taste like edible desiccant trying to mummify you from the inside out. These are fuyu persimmons which are not astringent. They’re crunchy kind of like an apple but very mild flavored. Personally I like them fully ripe or even ripened and dehydrated.

For me to get to enjoy them they have to survive the deer and my wife; I’m not expecting to get any this year 😅

This is our second season with it. It was full of fruit when we brought it home from the nursery last year but it dropped all that fruit from the stress of transplanting it.
