Because they went there several hundred years ago and were just so impressed by Brazilian culture.

Portuguese people kept falling in love with the Brazilian beaus, greatest cultural exchange in history...

But they'd only booked a holiday for around a few hundred years and when the trip was over, the portuguese had made Brazil famous. Brazilian coffee, Brazilian beaches, Brazilian bikinis... The resort was all booked up by people travelling in from all over the world. The Portuguese couldn't get a foot in for a while!

And many of the visitors didn't want to leave; that's why Brazil has become the most diverse country on Earth.

A trend started by Dom Pedro I of Brazil. When he had the chance to return to Portugal after the country was liberated from Napoleonic forces, he was like "Nah fam, I'm staying here." Not least because he's the emperor of Brazil but genuinely loves the country. To be fair to him, he was pretty progressive for his time despite being the monarch.

a recurring problem with progressive leaders - they just go on holiday

This picture of a fucking map with a red circle drawn on it has an AI generated content disclosure...? Wtf.

[–] AmyAye@nord.pub 2 points 1 day ago

The original creator probably doesn't know the actual shape of all those counties or states or whatever they are and just stuck an AI label on it so when people pointed it out they could blame AI

[–] roserose56@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know if it's AI, I found it on the Internet.

Come to think of it, why does Brazil speak Brazilian and not Latin like the rest of Latin America?

[–] FavouriteShapes@sh.itjust.works 4 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

It must be because they're just not as devoutly catholic

[–] protogen420@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 17 hours ago

cuban is suprisingly catholic, brazil has a lot of evangelicals, think of them as mormons basically, very religous fundamentalists and everyone thinks of them as weird

In the late 15th century, Portugal and Spain made a treaty dividing the World in two, one side for Portugal the other for Spain, called the Treaty Of Tordesillas.

The dividing line was a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands, which just so happens to cross South America leaving roughly the part were Brasil is on the Portuguese side and the rest on the Spanish side.

So that's why that part of South America speaks Portuguese and the rest speaks Spanish.

PS: Yeah, I get the joke, just thought the actual reason why is an interesting tidbit.

[–] atomicorange@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Because it’s the only part of Latin America that’s in Brazil. Their population is also primarily Brazilian.

[–] saimen@feddit.org 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Haha, and their capital is Brasilia, right? Hahaha

[–] Redjard@reddthat.com 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)
