Fiiine, for how long do they want me to stand before I can sit down again?

They found that every additional hour people spent sedentary each day was associated with a 10% higher risk of cancer death, while interrupting sedentary behavior with bouts of activity lowered risk: by 12% for an hour of light physical activity; 8% for 30 minutes of moderate physical activity; and 22% for just five minutes of vigorous activity.

So 5 minutes of pushups every 2 hours?

Could make it a routine. Those push-ups. Some jumping jacks. Maybe some squats. Little of everything.

I do something I call strength snacks at work for my 10 minute. The gym is down the hall from my office and my goal is to not sweat in my work clothes. It's much more appealing to do a pick up heavy thing put it back now that I convince some part of my brain that I am "getting away with it".

Have a cigarette...

Only if you do them fast. And five minutes of pushups is a lot. Most people couldn't even do one full minute. Try jumping jacks.

I think it just has to so with how much blood you can push around the body. Squats are probably the best bang for your time. I read somewhere that doing 10 squats every 30 minutes during your worksay is the equivalent to running for more than an hour in benefits.

Every 15 minutes, I change, do an hour of cross-fit, take a shower, change back to work clothes, and get back to work.

What is it about sitting that is always linked to this or that?

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean, it's just not something people are biologically supposed to be doing for a long time.

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I mean like, what is it about standing or even light movement that is so distinct on a biological/cellula level?

The appeal to whats natural or kind of teleollogical doesnt address that, like is there an actual material theory about "this is your body on sitting..."

Im curious if reclining is as bad, I very rarely (almost never actually "sit", more of a divan guy

Purely a guess on my part, but I imagine a not-insignificant amount of this is simply bloodflow. If cancer is a disruption in the cellular replication mechanics, then we're looking at protein folding, DNA replication, and ion pumps and cell stuff. Perhaps not "taking out the trash" via blood flow allows higher rates of cellular corruption? Maybe lower bloodflow results in weaker cell self-destructs? Lots of candidates...

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Does blood "take out the trash too", i didnt realize it serves that dual function. Like I knew it transports oxygen and maybe nutrients vaguely...

[–] assaultpotato@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It sure does! Blood is carried back to the spleen, kidney, and liver where the blood is "cleaned" of the waste it was carrying before being recirculated. It also carries immune cells to/from your lymph nodes, oxygen, water, all sorts of stuff. Blood is more than just WBC/RBC!

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

Blood is the lifeblood of the body!

[–] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not joking, has anyone studied the potential anti-cancer benefits of substances that stimulate blood flow like caffeine and niacin?

[–] assaultpotato@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

I'm not sure, but that could be interesting.

[–] Akuchimoya@startrek.website 1 points 2 days ago

Since we're guessing, I'd guess lymph is part of it. It's part of our immune systems, but, unlike blood which has its own pumping mechanism (the heart), lymph gets moved along passively.

There's one paradoxical-seeming fact that adult humans generally use the same amount of calories each day regardless of their physical activity level. There are exceptions, but they are extreme cases, like professional athletes pushing their limits.

It makes sense if you think about it. Processes that give us access to energy aren't exactly fast, so our bodies will just be producing that energy regardless so it's there if we need it. But when we don't, any cells can grab them up to do their cell things, which includes cancer cells (which we all have but are mostly benign), giving them more chances to make more mistakes copying DNA, which rolls the dice more often on picking up some of those mutations that make them dangerous or deadly.

It's also why you lose weight in the kitchen rather than the gym. Your body isn't doing anything differently with the food you eat whether you take a nap or go for a run.

What does that actually do downstream or like what is the nexus to the physiologic conclusion of cancer or whatever its being linked to?

How does worse blood flow achieve or result in cancers or etc?

Good thing I get up every hour or so to pace around and have a smoke. Those old tobacco ads weren't so far from the truth after all.

What if I have a, like, $3000 ergonomic chair?

The "break" from sitting in my case means working
