I feel that I'm being manipulated. The headlines about this story used to be "Singer gets punished with 74 lashes for violating some religious law". Now I find out that you can just avoid the lashes by paying a fine. It's like saying "man faces prison for going 10km/h over the speed limit" because if you don't pay a fine, you eventually end up in prison.

And even in this story that reveals that you choose between paying a fine and corporal punishment, I feel manipulated. 100 MILLION troman sounds like a lot, but it turns out it's just 730 bucks.

How incredibly gross and blatant, this consent manufacturing machine. I guess it doesn't need to be subtle, people only remember headlines. Damage done, mission successful. Maybe war on Iran is good actually. We'll get it right this time.

Using pure currency conversion, sure.

The average annual income of an urban household was approximately 3.432 billion rials

Sauce. Evidently there's a factor of 10 difference between these two denominations, so you're talking about 1/3 of the average household's income. For Muricans, that's around $27k.

What the fuck what legal system exchanges $10 a lash???

[–] rethnor@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is that any different than paying bail?

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

Yes. Bail is just a bond on your own head. The court keeps it if you don't show up, and you get it back if you do.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

iran should really layoff the "blasphemy sharia laws" since they currently have a good PR thing going on because of trump.

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

When you look at videos of Iran, the headscarf laws are clearly not enforced at all. So I am betting this woman did something different than just not wearing a headscarf like criticizing the government

[–] treesquid@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

She was filming the video for her song "A Dream Of Freedom", so yeah, the government was already not a big fan

[–] AviAdi@suppo.fi 2 points 2 days ago

Bro, that's propaganda from a tyrannical government. Listen to any Iranian that managed to escape! They want all their government leaders dead, though they may not want to say it out of "decency"

[–] BilboBargains@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

In other news, Iran is at war with America and its stooges following a failed coup attempt by America and its stooges.

A fine? Does the religion carve out exceptions in exchange for money, or do they just disregard the religion in exchange for money?

Either way, it might be interesting if she can (SAFELY) keep doing it at every show and the budget can cover the fines as a business expense. Maybe she could help normalize it a bit. (I assume that would be a good thing, but I admit that I'm pretty ignorant on the topic.)

[–] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

She could only pay the fine because she had no prior criminal record - it's mentioned in the article.

[–] percent@infosec.pub 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

You're referring to this part, right?

[...] her lack of a prior criminal record made it legally possible to convert the 74 lashes into a cash fine.

Does a criminal record include cash fines in Iran, or does she continue having no criminal record?

[–] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

If it's like pretty much anywhere else, the fine simply replaces the lashes in the sentencing phase. The conviction happened long before that and is separate.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

~~Does the~~ religion ~~carve out exceptions in exchange for~~ money.

Fixed it for you.

Tbf if you count Zakat, Islam does let you get away with some sin so long as you give money to people in need, tho I don't think old men running the government are exactly "people in need."

Perhaps call it an Indulgence?

[–] Hakuso@scribe.disroot.org 71 points 3 days ago (9 children)

Every time I want to cheer Iran for making outlr government look like the braindead idiots they are I see some shit like this.

We need plucky heroes fighting the Epstein Class and their Zionist puppeteers,, damnit, not the Muslim version of MAGAts.

You can support them against imperialism, while still disagreeing with them as an authoritarian state.

Critical support should never mean complete support.

Remember, the only reason these religions nut jobs are in power is because the UK and US overthrow Iran's secular democracy for a pro west dictator. We killed off every left thinking person while secretly training and funding right wing theological factions as a region destabilizing force.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago

Yep, says right here in chapter 23, thou shalt not forsake thy hijab, unless thou hast money.

[–] ActualGrapesTasteGreen@piefed.zip 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

When you inject religion into your laws, paying fines begins to feel like bribing god. They're undermining themselves here.

[–] snausagesinablanket@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

If the world wasn't watching in disgust, they would have flogged her to death. The fine was the government's way out without losing face.

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 42 points 3 days ago

See… it’s not an affront to the religion if you pay hard cash.

Pathetic.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago (8 children)

[–] swagmoney@lemmy.ca 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I had to conduct some research before deciding.

1 2 3

Results inconclusive, further research required.

Classic westoid behaviour 👌. Perving on Middle Eastern women in a thread about how the evil patriarchy in Iran subjugates women. It's true that westoids will never be happy in life until every woman on earth ends up on pornhub. If you can't google hot pics of ladies in your society then is your society even functional?

Your natural instinct is to perv on the woman and imply you need to see her naked to establish her hotness. And you lack the self awareness to see how your society socialized you into this monkey behaviour where every woman is an attainable piece of ass online. Like an entire society afflicted with Tinder-brain. Objectify, Commodify, rate hotness, see if porn available, move on to the next one.

So the poors receive lashes I see

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I know it's stupid, but I'm relieved for the girl. 74 lashes seems a little much. and of course other people have died over this and other "Islamic law", if she had said "I'm atheist" or "I'm gay" she'd be long dead.

To me, it's so horrible that I can't research Iran et al for long without having to tap out

[–] lornosaj@lemmy.world 37 points 3 days ago (4 children)
[–] just2look@lemmy.zip 53 points 3 days ago (6 children)

That is an absolutely bonkers alternative to being beaten to death. Like why are those the two options?

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 24 points 3 days ago

She would not have been beaten to death. They split the lashes punishments into as many sessions as needed for the person to survive. So instead of 74 lashes at once (guaranteed death), she'd have to take like 15 lashes 5 times.

Very considerate. I was beginning to think they're cruel.

[–] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's ~1.5 times the average monthly salary in Tehran. Comparable sum in NYC would be ~9-10k USD

[–] Quokka@quokk.au 26 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Compared to potential death, it’s still a small price.

Well thank fuck. I still of course maintain my firm opposition to the Iranian government for their continued tyranny against women

[–] UsernamesAreForSuckers@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Fuck these stupid ass religions forcing their beliefs on people. Your god is a lie made up by the ruling class to control you and get you to die in their wars.
