@yogthos

There is a respectable chance that they are simply trolling for more money in at this time building those sweet sweet government subsidies, they’re angling for

I'm sure that's exactly what it is.

(They're for sure doing that, but to be clear this screenshot isn't real)

What do you mean 'soyboy betacuck' isn't a real employee?

It's not all that outlandish for OpenAI, their lizard CEO is literally called "Alt-man"

Western Business will continue to do this, until it's no longer profitable. All the people have to do is wake up, act accordingly.

A quote from another thread that stuck:

Guy Debord when he said:

"We've gone from a society of being, to knowing, to appearing to be".

Can someone translate this to Gen X for me?

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

translation: china is evil, give us more money to stop them.

I assume it is fake, but basically these US companies spent billions making proprietary models to make money and the Chinese came along and made models that are just as/nearly as good, and made them open for anyone to use.

They are also charging less to use them. Third parties that provide AI access can run them on their own hardware without expensive licensing fees so again they are some of the cheapest models to run for their capabilities.

The US companies thought it was a race to the top. First one to hit AGI would get mega rich eliminating jobs across the globe. Turns out AGI isn't here yet, and it costs so much to run that no one is paying for it anyways.

The Chinese know this is a race to the bottom. The models will get better, and the hardware more capable, so focusing on compute capacity and keeping costs low is the important part.

If the Chinese keep up, or at least nearly keep up with a considerably lower cost, then the US AI companies can't make their money back (they aren't anywhere near profitable) and go broke.

OK but I still don't know what "mogged" is

[–] mumblerfish@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

It means to be better at something, basically. I think it started getting used in looksmaxxing communities. There it was used in a sense of "who looks better", but often in a... Not sure how to explain it... If you try really hard to look good, operations, skin care, you name it, and then you sit down next to just some random person that never put any effort into their looks but looks better than you, then you are getting mogged. Iirc they took mogging from the movie Zoolander.

Just ask a Chinese LLM

[–] Fancy_Gecko@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

what source / website do you recommend for following AI news or learning about AI in general ?

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

hackernews tends to be fairly up to date on the developments, just don't read the comments when there's any discussion involving China 🀣
