I got mine today, so I haven't used it much yet. However it seems that streaming isn't quite there yet on Linux (it mostly worked if I started steamVR beforehand, but not always).

Report:

Setup is reasonably effortless, although I will not specify the embarrassing amount of time spent before I found the icon to bring up the virtual reality keyboard with which to type my Steam credentials. It seems to me Valve could also have done a little more polishing work with the UI in specifying in advance just which desktop you're going to bring up when you choose "desktop" in the bottom menu, either the one on your big tethered PC or the dinky KDE one built into the headset. It's not entirely clear without close observation when you're tethered to your PC and when you aren't. Still, it was a pleasant surprise to find that this is running KDE in its standalone mode.

The Frame is significantly smaller and its weight is better distributed than my Reverb G2. Valve has, however, made a notable omission in failing to accommodate Spheniscidae and allies, as there appears to be insufficient IPD adjustment range for species lacking binocular vision.

Still, I persevered. Probably to the chagrin of my wife, as we prepared dinner with me wearing the things in passthrough mode like Sterling Archer and his night vision goggles. (Which you can use these as, after a fashion, albeit only with a very short effective range.)

Other observations:

  • The controller tracking is noticeably better than my Reverb G2. I like this a lot. I wonder how much the inbuilt accelerometers help with this.
  • The capacitive surfaces all over the controller are certainly interesting, but apparently impossible to avoid and I can't find where to turn them off. This is largely academic, other than resulting in you doing various hand-jive actions in e.g. Half Life: Alyx even when you're just standing there holding the controllers and not pressing any of the buttons.
  • I was ready for the lack of a charging adapter in the box because I'd heard about it in advance... repeatedly. But this still seems like an ill-advised omission. Dedicated nerds will of course have any amount of 30+ watt charging bricks already lying around the place, and I certainly do, but normal people won't and this seems like one of those things that would ruin somebody's Christmas morning if their parents weren't paying attention. At over $1000 already for the base model, I'd doubt that including a cheap charging brick in the box would have broken the budget. As it is, the Frame isn't actually ready to play out of the box.
  • All of the preliminary reviews were right, and the controller binding menus are a five alarm dumpster fire in a blender. If Valve needs to work on anything to improve the software, it's this. Completely notwithstanding all the various modes to emulate different controllers, which you may need a PhD in PC gaming to comprehend, just figuring out how to swap two button's actions in the game you're currently playing is way too complicated of an operation.
  • Inspection of your own mug in a mirror via passthrough mode reveals that the front panel is not truly opaque. While it looks black, is in fact completely transparent to IR. Under the IR illuminators in the dark you can see the circuit board through the front of the headset. I imagine this is made of the same stuff as the little windows on the front of TV remotes.
  • Using the headset in passthrough mode will reveal every blasted bleeding blinking IR source in your house, including all the ones hidden in your electronics for no identifiable reason. On that note, having a reference point for orienting and centering yourself in your VR play space quickly might finally be a good use case for your Wii's sensor bar, which otherwise hasn't seen any action since 2011.
  • Somehow the thing can show you your defined play space's area outlined on the floor even if you walk away and into other rooms of the house, up or down stairs, and through walls. And it remains perfectly correctly positioned throughout insofar as I can tell, which is deeply uncanny. In light of this, if somebody out there has to have a detailed floor plan of my house I'm gratified it's Gaben rather than Mark Zuckerberg.
  • The speakers are clearly audible to other people in the room. A word to the wise for anyone hoping to peruse their library of Horny Games in privacy: Use separate headphones.

Had mine a few days now

I am blown away. I love it so much.

I already went out and got a USB-PD power bank, plus a 1 meter 90 degree usb c cable, to have in my back pocket. Still drained both it and then the Frame today.

I want to find a good case for it, and I think I'll get a cheap bluetooth mouse for desktop mode stuff. My G515 keyboard already works great, but having to keep using one hand with one of the controllers to move the mouse is tedius.

Now trying to figure out the best way to do Beat Saber modding on the Frame, so I can run modded BS in stand-alone.

Yes, a big-arsed power brick is probably on the agenda. My current big-arsed brick, home built, can charge it but apparently does not have sufficient oomph to do so while the headset is powered on and playing.

I may also obtain an unwisely long cable and dangle it from the ceiling for living room use. My previous headset is wired, so no great loss there. In fact and come to think of it, I already have a 10-ish meter USB-C extension which can power my Reverb G2; that'll probably work.

I used some USB cables with wattage indicators to measure what I'd need.

Idle with display on, it pulls about 10-14W. (Still more than what a basic phone charger will provide) Running a game it goes up to 20-22W.

But even with a 65W PD power adaptor, while gaming+charging, it never pulled more than 30W.

What the actual PD power modes it used were, I can't say, but I went with a 20000mAh 65W bank. And it does charge the Frame while it's being used, meaning I can use the bank to top up, then plug the bank in to charge while I keep playing using the internal battery.

I may end up using a cable at home, too, since I can't seem to get the wifi streaming working reliably in my apartment building, but the battery bank solution nicely extends runtimes when travelling with the Frame. I will absolutely be using it for big screen movies and stuff on the go.

In terms of comfort though, playing untethered is just bliss. Even with the battery bank in a pocket.

My email manifested yesterday. Accessories are out of stock. Not smart valve, not smart

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I haven't decided on accessories yet. I will probably get the color camera. Maybe a face gasket.

[–] faltryka@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I got the color camera and it’s obvious to me now that I didn’t really need it, but it doesn’t hurt lol

[–] artyom@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

I'm not really a fan of smart valves anyway.

[–] TheSambassador@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Yeah, and apparently their recommendation is just "keep checking back" for whether it's going to be in stock.

These controllers are really awkward to hold and I've heard the ergo pack improves them substantially.

After getting moved to the reservation queue, I feel a lot better about my prospects. 😛

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

It took three days to get from reservation to receiving my voucher to purchase. After that it took two days for Valve to ship the thing, but when they finally did they apparently overnighted it. Either that or they delayed in providing me the tracking number. I got it the next day, i.e. today.

Mine arrived today too! It's on the shelf for now until I get a more powerful USB hub though. The dongle kept switching on and off when I plugged it into my current one, so I figured it was drawing more power than was available.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I just chunked mine into one of the top ports on my case, where it looks ridiculous. It's right next to the receiver for my Manba gamepad, which looks equally ridiculous. One thing I can say about my case is apparently it's a rather effective Faraday cage, and if I want anything wireless to reach the living room I can't plug those devices into the back anyhow.

It's just as well. As a certified Power User, my motherboard's rear ports are... full.

[–] PoastRotato@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Yeah, the dongle is way chonkier than I was expecting. My USB hub used to be dominated by a 1 inch Turtle Beach headset adapter, which towered over my wireless mouse and keyboard adapters. Then along came the Steam Frame adapter, and now my Turtlr Beach adapter has a complex 🤣

Weirdly enough, my Bluetooth signal reaches all the way from my PC in my office to my living room (~15 feet, across two walls), but all my dongles give up as soon as I leave the room.

Nice! What games do you have?

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)
  • Half Life: Alyx (allegedly a copy comes with the set but I already had it)
  • Elite Dangerous, No Mans Sky, Everspace, and Subnautica (which all support VR natively in one capacity or another)
  • Both Arizona Sunshines
  • Both Budget Cuts
  • Borderlands 2 VR, which I've never even launched (I think I wound up with it via Humble Bundle at one point)
  • The Forest
  • Espire 1
  • Gun Club VR
  • Job Simulator
  • Psychonauts and the Rhombus of Ruin (also a Humble Bundle entry, I think)
  • Sairento
  • Star Trek: Bridge Crew
  • Surgeon Simulator (Humble Bundle again)
  • Swords of Gurrah
  • Project Cars
  • Assetto Corsa
  • Probably various others I can't recall right now
[–] tacosanonymous@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Cool. I’ve never tried Gun Club. Is it any good?

Also, if you haven’t gotten it, Super Hot VR is awesome.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Gun Club is very gun-wank if you're into that sort of thing. It has a bunch of realistically rendered firearms you can use in a shooting range. It's lacking the actual game component in that there's not much to do with them beyond noodle around. It does have some competition events where you have a time trial shooting pop-up cardboard targets, but that's it.
