A 50 pound bag of flour for the winter breads that will soon be filling the kitchen with bread smells.

Nothing more than usual. Got a tub of dry sticks for fuel and several kg of rice and oats.

Nuts and seeds, actually. I have a couple squirrels and many birds to ~~bait~~feed on my balcony! My indoor cat enjoys watching and occasionally pouncing.

They're also a pretty good snack for humans, but here in Germany the prices have gone crazy high.

I haven't fully woken up yet, and it took me a minute to realize you were talking about nuts/seeds, not squirrels.

I get a 5-pound bag of Audubon "sunflower hearts and chips" for about $15 and scatter one cup a day on the balcony. Cheaper because not human-grade.

I eat pecans and almonds myself, sharing a few with the wildlife. Walnuts bother me but the squirrels love them so I get them when they're on sale. Some nuts like cashews aren't good for them so I save those for me.

It's not a complete diet but I'm not their entire food source.

Oh yes, it makes them jump and fly but nobody gets hurt. Mourning doves and finches are apparently the best for pouncing at. The squirrels (2 I think, but only ever one at a time so it's hard to be sure) and the Band-tailed Pigeons we call Big Bird and Mrs Big Bird are too large, and juncoes aren't scared. Hummingbirds don't trigger the impulse for her, but I like them so I keep sugar stocked even though I'm on keto.

It's still quite temperate where I am (it's 25 in my office right now and we have no heat/aircon on) and will probably remain that way for another month or so. We won't get frost until sometime in late November unless something unusual happens. I can't think of anything I'm stocking up on. I already have kerosene in case we lose power and enough rice for quite a while, though the latter is normal because Japan and disasters.

Memories of sunlight and trees and the feeling of grass.

It already feels so dark so early where I live.

[โ€“] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You should get a SA D light

[โ€“] KanadrAllegria@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I should. Or one of those sunlight alarm clocks so it feels like it's not the middle of the night when I wake up for work.

[โ€“] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Both are fine but prioritize sad light, theres not a ton of science behind the sunrise alarms even tho they are nice and pleasanter to wake up to

How doyou not have enough already

Define enough. Enough for what?

But, the reason I'm still accumulating rather than just holding onto what I have is that I prefer to have enough to A: supply other people should it be necessary.
B: have enough for practice in a similarly emergent and long term situation (say a major hurricane leaving an area devastated for weeks to months).
C: to be able to use my more specific task firearms for those tasks/practice when I want to rather than having to deal with finding ammo per use.
D: some ammo is more expensive, so I can't usually afford bulk purchases
E: not every type of ammo is right for every use (say, wadcutter vs fmj vs frangible, etc)

And, F: while I don't have a massive gun collection, they are each a different caliber except for having two .45s that are set to for different uses. So I'm trying to stock up a half dozen calibers, in different types of ammo. Makes it take longer to reach a given goal.

As an example, even sourcing the rounds for one of my rifles is disgust difficult because it's not a super popular round, but it is just in demand enough that I can only find one box as a time, and never even that during hunting season. I only have two boxes of twenty for that rifle, which isn't even enough for a day of serious practice with it. It's my second favorite long gun, period, but without ammo, it's a wall hanger.

But my 45 stash is already massive. A few hundred fmj, similar wadcutter, plus a few boxes of my preferred carry ammo for the one I keep handiest. The other is a target shooting piece, which I rarely get to do any more, but I do have a dozen boxes of stuff just for that.

It's kind like if you're an avid home cook. You'll never use every spice in the rack at once, but you want to have anything you might want ready to go because if you get a wild hair up your ass to make chicken paprikash, you want the right kind of paprika, not just a random single type, you dig?

Hell, for anything other than the handguns, I've only been gathering ammo for a few years. They're all fairly recent acquisitions (right before covid, and ammo was scarce back then), and my budget for ammo is tiny. As in maybe a box or two a couple times a year. With the handguns, I was given four or five ammo cans full of 45 when my grandfather gave me the target shooting one. But some of that won't cycle in my carry gun, so out of the thousand-ish I have in 45, only maybe a hundred can be used in both, and that's not a very big supply.
