Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flew over Greece, Italy, France and Canada on Thursday on his way to address the UN, despite an International Criminal Court warrant for his arrest.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Gaza since October 2023.

Netanyahu arrived in the US for a short visit to address the UN General Assembly in New York, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said he does not have the authority to arrest the Israeli leader.

TIL: Under Article 3(c) of the Chicago Convention, a state aircraft cannot fly over another country’s territory without that country’s authorization.

Whereas for ordinary commercial airliners, the necessary overflight rights are usually already established through international treaties and bilateral/multilateral aviation agreements.

the west's rules based international order is dead , and they killed it themselves

[–] davel@lemmy.ml 45 points 1 week ago

The Western imperialist rules-based order is the same as it ever was: they make up the rules and order everyone else around.

[–] EmmiLime@lemmy.ml 32 points 1 week ago

turns out the "international" law only applies to the global south and that the "international community" is just the NATO and friends.

"Rules-based international order" folks.

Coming from reddit, it's interesting to see a world news forum that isn't entirely and totally captured by Israeli Hasbara mods. I got banned from reddit's /worldnews for pointing out that "invade Iran" vs "let Iran have nukes" is an asinine false dichotomy. (And I didn't even use the word "asinine.")

[–] BanMeFromPosting@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I think Iran should have nukes

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Ideally no country should have nukes.

However, Iran having nukes may be preferable to Iran having its country 'annihilated' by an empire that already has nukes, and is the only country to have ever used them.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 week ago

In the world where countries do have nukes, I think Iran should have nukes. In a world without nukes I think they should also not have them.

I hate to say I told you so, but I earlier this week I said the ICC a neocolonial imperialist institution employs selective justice. Turns out the .today and .worlders were wrong again.

Remember when France did this on Obama's orders in 2013? Bolivia Presidential plane forced to land after false rumors of Snowden onboard.

The rules bent order

where Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said he does not have the authority to arrest the Israeli leader.

As expected, he knew this very well

[–] BeatTakeshi@lemmy.world 30 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Contrary to France, Italy and Greece who signed the ICC; they have the authority but not the balls nor the spine. Their leaders are fucking losers

But what about the rules based international order?

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 24 points 1 week ago

We break the rules, you follow the orders, Citizen!

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I think any country that allows things like this should get ignored by the ICC for any criminals that they want to have arrested. France looking for a criminal that stole stuff from the Louvre or something? Nah, ask someone else.

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmy.ml 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

France (and the rest of capitalist core) is already ignored by ICC. Reading many comments in this thread i see that people seems to have many misconceptions concerning purpose and scale of ICC. In fact, it is not chasing burglars, but it is the colonial court for Africa and the scale of its activities are kinda pathetic since the number of indicted are not many and many of them were not even arrested and judged.

ICC only had its five minutes when it accused Putin (enthusiastically supported by all the countries that now ignore its accusation against Netanyahu) and now Netanyahu.

  1. Colonize Africa, appropriating its land and people.
  2. Stop colonization, but never pay African countries back for it in any noticeable capacity.
  3. Force African countries to join the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund, both of which strongly prioritize rich countries' interests.
  4. Now they're not colonies, but they still have to work like slaves to pay off unfair debts.
  5. Force them to join the ICC, which, among other activities, punishes mostly African government officials for forced labour in their countries, without which they would not be able to pay off debts to rich countries.

This is the West, the one that is supposedly peaceful, democratic, and wants to build a rule-based world order. Yep, checks out.

Because US have in law that they can use military force, if them or their allies are put before the ICC.

[–] Brimstone@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 days ago

But he’s afraid to fly over Ireland but not France.

It’s quite telling

[–] hoppeduponcoffee@lemmy.zip 22 points 1 week ago

I wish they’d call the bluff, the US military is already overstretched.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Typical western double standards. Apparently, AIPAC has control over these countries' politicians
