Does anyone know if it has a headphone jack? It seems dumb to brag about having B&O work on the audio if not, but I am still thinking it won't which will kill any interest in it.

Edit: I confirmed it does not have one. total junk

Minority of a minority of a minority.

Them and the "make it smaller crowd" too. A very small, very loud minority that fails to actually show up when such a product is released.

I think people going for this hardware + OS are more of a function over form crowd.

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 27 points 2 weeks ago

90W charging, huge storage option, high quality cameras (I already have a billion lenses on the back of my phone so I just don't give a shit), great screen - yeah I don't care how the thing looks. I care about GrapheneOS support and that it has the hardware to keep it usable for more than a couple of years.

Right now its between this and a flip phone + umpc for me. We'll see where things go in the coming months.

Jesus, I don't care what it does to the image quality, I just don't ever want 4 lenses on the back of my phone

[–] GloriousGasHole@piefed.social 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I miss the days of a single camera lens. I wouldn't even mind a system where you can swap the lens for different needs, but having a "camera bump" on a phone is so annoying. I prefer not needing a case to make the back of my phone lay flat on a table.

I'm glad it comes with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme instead of one that's not Elite or Extreme

Those cameras are stupid, 200MP is utter nonsense, no SD card slot is insane.. I wish Graphene would pick a better phone

[–] Natanael@infosec.pub 11 points 1 week ago

Graphene picked an OEM who were willing to work with them and a device with the right CPU to support the hardware security features.

This was what was available.

Over $1000 but no headphone jack?? It's such a basic request for a privacy based phone

[–] Nerdulous@lemmy.zip 29 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

It's not a privacy based phone. It's a phone they're hoping to sell to mass market consumers that so happens to be about to run a privacy based OS.

You are not the target audience and will continue to not be unless people like you become the dominant consumer of such a device. The problem is the people who enjoy this community, by and large, own a pixel 3 and won't purchase anything unless it's got every feature they want.

Even more unfortunately is those features only end up on cheap phones because manufacturers correlated them with poor people. Need a headphone jack? Must be too poor to afford Bluetooth headphones. Need an sd card slot? Must be too poor to afford a cloud subscription or bigger phone. Need a removable battery or to repair your device? You obviously can't afford to buy a new phone every 2 years.

The bottom line is you are all too sensible to spend the money and influence design decisions so this is what you get.

Even the cheap motos have headphone jacks, but I guess that's to much to ask.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 24 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I know they already said to expect flagships, but it's still very disappointing to me.

Personally, I'm just never going to buy a phone with something like the 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, a flagship among flagships.

What are you supposed to do with a beast like that? It's just a lot of money wasted, because nothing you'll ever use a smartphone for requires even 50% of that performance.

I hope some cheaper, weaker options will be supported by Graphene too.

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

All I want any phone to do is a great camera, a decent auto experience and contactless payments.

I hope linux can get a decent camera system operational. GOS stock camera is abysmal.

I've been so hyped for this, but wow am I ever disappointed. Here's hoping some better phones are to come with Graphene support

Happy to hear it's coming, hoping midrange phones are next.

I'll probably get downvotes but the phone is SO ugly

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is it? The camera lenses are a bit off-putting but it's a slab with circles on the back like every other phone since the mid 2010s

Oh my god that is ugly as shit it looks straight out of 2006

[–] DeadEndLink@lemmy.ca 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Aren't these things $1400 or some crazy price?

[–] GloriousGasHole@piefed.social 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

From what I have seen, the last Motorola Signature was €999 (~$1,136 USD or $1,606 CAD). So not a cheap device at all.

  • Not Linux
  • No headphone Jack
  • No SDCard
  • might as well be a spider in the back
  • most likely not user serviceable
  • Corpo-ahh looking device
  • possibly inaccessibly priced
  • FEELS like undesirable government officials will be the ones to get these devices

Nothing to see here. Just a bunch of noise.

Only good thing is, graphene no longer locked to google devices.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 24 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

not Linux

I mean yeah no shit? That's like the entire point. It's grapheneOS

[–] timbuck2themoon@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 weeks ago

I think theyre making that point based off the community it was posted in.

[–] Martineski@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 2 weeks ago

So you agree that the post very clearly doesn't fit this community at all. lol

This is awesome; first non-google phone supported. It us a bit on the expensive side for me, but a good step in the right direction.

Hopefully they will be able to get Motorola/Qualcomm to have the required security features on a lower end SoC and hence phone.
