I've always found it weird that people assume you have to be part of a marginalized group to support that group.

Although I've heard it's not uncommon for gay people to hate on trans people, so maybe that's why he asked.

Even among supportive cis gay people (which I've been fortunate enough to have no shortage of), there's still this idea that focusing on us (trans people) is weird. As the attacks have ramped up and more cis folks have had formative queer experiences involving us that's started to change.

Tbh I think it's partly because of the historic fragmentation within the community. Gay men focus on gay men's issues, lesbians focus on lesbian issues, bi people focus on bi issues, and trans people focus on any combination of issues within the community including trans issues.

The first place I'd say the shift really happened was in queer health as HIV became manageable queer health clinics began also offering transition related care.

Is this from the Hudsucker Proxy?

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 23 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

It is from the Big Lebowski, I haven't seen the Hudsucker Proxy. Should I watch it ?

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I would recommend it. It’s a collaboration between the Coen Brothers and Sam Raimi if I recall correctly.

It has it's moments, but it works best if you're familiar with 1930's movies like 'Mr. Deeds Goes To Town' and 'His Girl Friday.'

or first-hand account on the effects of marijuana on the human nervous system

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 6 points 1 week ago

ah, I might just be the target audience !

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 3 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Cheers, I'll do my homework before watching then

[–] SmoothLiquidation@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I will say I have never seen those movies but Hudsucker Proxy is in my list of favorite 20 movies.

Yeah it's great without context. "You know, for kids"

This reminded me of a time my friend tells me I looked like an absolute badass, but from my point of view is a panic-blurt moment.

I was at pride, and walking to meet some friends. I passed by a green party booth and they tried to pull me in to talk about the green party, and I just wanted to go see my friends.

Me: walking quickly

Green party people: hey, would you like to learn more about the green party?

Me: nope. Communist. Thanks!

One time I was walking along in the evening with my cello on my back, group of drunk girls pass me by on the other side of the road

One yells "I'll give you a blowy if I can play your guitar"

I shout back "it's a cello and I'm gay, sorry!", they all lose it laughing, felt good

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

... Is it common where you are for women to just offer blowjobs to random passersby? I'm gay, but my best friend needs to move wherever this is

[–] CelloMike@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

When you've got an enormous cello case on your back you just become a target for drunk people to yell stuff (that's the only blowjob offer I've had off it though)

I was once approached by a junior member of the Communist Struggle Organization. They are a little bit like communist Jehovas witnesses, and I had no time to talk to them, so I just blurted "Stop, I am a member of the Consumist Struggle Organization. If you get too close, we'll annihilate."

The guy looked back at one of the senior members in confusion who saw me, recognized me and just said "Oh we know him, just let him go"

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Mind if I ask what country? I've never heard of that group

[–] muzzle@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

Not an English speaking one, I translated the name and the story.

[–] ImgurRefugee114@reddthat.com 35 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I got a good chuckle out of this, against my will, in public...

[–] thenextguy@sh.itjust.works 34 points 2 weeks ago

I hate it when that happens. Never want strangers to see you amused.

[–] glibg@lemmy.ca 22 points 1 week ago (2 children)

What does stealth mode mean in this context?

[–] resting_parrot@sh.itjust.works 44 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I believe it means they are trans but passing as cis

[–] glibg@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago

Ah OK, thanks!

OP attended the conference 100% as a man, concealing the fact that he was assigned female at birth to avoid unwanted attention.

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Kind of a dumb question anyways, for what it's worth. The concept of intersectionality means that it's not really feasible to support one marginalized group to the exclusion of others.

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The concept of intersectionality means that it's not really feasible to support one marginalized group to the exclusion of others.

Um... It's looking pretty feasible to me. Not nearly as effective, but that doesn't seem to be stopping a lot of people

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They can try, but it's not a long-term route to success. The problem is that, by bargaining the rights of other marginalized groups away, you'll inevitably reach a point where you have to explain why you specifically deserve rights and others don't to an authority that believes neither deserve any.

[–] ARMADILLOMANIA@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

Some people think discrimination and inclusion are zero-sum games when they tend to be in fact transitive.

[–] SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org 15 points 1 week ago

Ah, of course. The good ole' Marxist concept of empathy.
