I watched lower decks (my first real entry into Star Trek) and really liked it, so I started watching TNG.
Does the original series hold up? I’ll need something to watch after I’m done with TNG

IMHO TOS is the best Trek but as stated it's a sign of it's time.
What I appreciate is it's more like a western than TNG which is more heavy on the beaurocracy which is also a sign of the times.
TOS has a magical simplicity that is so easy to get lost in.
The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.
The original series was definitely of a different era, best viewed through an anthropological lens.
i went to several fan parties commemorating the 30th & 40th anniversaries and comparing them to the relative cricket chirping for the 50th and 60th anniversaries makes me wonder about the trajectory of the series' popularity.
It's over, isnt it? I dont see a way back from here.

- JJ Abbrams ("I don't like Star Trek") grim-dark space fantasy movies
- Owned by deranged zionist-fascist company within the larger holdings of a techno-fascist empire
- Roddenberry as anchor dead
- Elon Musk celebrated as visionary
- Whipped into generic space fantasy IP because it's the only thing of even minor value that has the possibility of a "universe" of content like Disney's Star Wars for its owners who probably derive a huge chunk of Paramount+ subscribers just from viewers of the nu-Trek.
- Show-runners even in the late 90s in the immediate aftermath of Roddenberry were making some questionable choices to tone down the egalitarianism and FALSC nature of it (Rick Berman).
Yeah I'd say it's pretty over unless ownership changes.
Capital subsumes and corrupts all critiques of itself especially in the heart of empire. ToS and TNG could really only exist as they did because of the larger historical and material reality they occupied. Post US victory in the cold war things began to shift and they've continued shifting. Science fiction claims to want to transcend current events and biases but it's very hard to do that and even harder if you want mass market appeal (and funding) in a place like the US.
This is all spot on.
Trek has been here before -- maybe it's time for a rebirth outside the hands that have shaped it's current iteration. ... Again
In the middle of a voyager rewatch rn, but I'll pry do the original series after. It surprised me how good it was.

I’m old, but not quite Star Trek premier old.
I’m going through TNG for the first time and I have really enjoyed everyone’s performances. There’s the occasional cheesy or over-the-top plot, but most of them touch on seriously interesting perspectives on issues that I hadn’t necessarily considered.
As someone majorly into cinema, I was definitely putting this one off for too long. I plan to watch Voyager, then the original series then just sort of jump around from there. I get why it’s such a sensation now.
It's technically better than Star Wars now.
I heard even Picard season 3 was alright too and everyone hated that show.
Id definitely rather watch strange new worlds than modern star wars . Ppl hate the current season for the "gimmicks" while I personally like the episodic bottle episodes. Kinda what I thought star trek was all about. Just started watching the original and it was hornier than I thought it would be. They were heavy on the sexploitation of audiences, I love it.
Frankly, I love gimmicks.
Hell, I love episodic or anthologized stuff.
(I loved Star Wars: The Clone Wars when it aired, for example)
