Come to Quark’s, Quark’s is Fun!

General off-topic chat for the crew of startrek.website. Trek-adjacent discussions, other sci-fi television, navigating the Fediverse, server meta (within reason), selling expired cases of Yamok sauce, it’s all fair game.

Hope this is appropriate for this place. I just watched S04E04 of DS9 with this interaction (at 10:12, the linked clip in this post) an hour ago, and later talked with a friend who said basically the same thing about the Trump presidency: that it has positive effects in the sense that for example Europe is starting to be more independent from the US, the American citizens are waking up about how their political system is broken.

And it's interesting to me, like obviously it'd be much better if we could all just get along and work together, but the status quo before was just the US doing the same shitty things as now, telling the EU what to do and the countries within the EU just do it no questions asked basically. The whole shittyness just covert. Now the shittyness is so obvious that "US allies" are stopping that dependency on the US.

Let me know what you think, or if I am stupid. I am just mainly amazed by DS9 and Star Trek being so relevant still.

We are transferring to a new server. We expect everything to be complete without 48hours but could possibly take longer if we run into any issues.

Check our Mastodon account for updates: https://tenforward.social/@TrekSite

And if you would like to help with our increased hosting costs please consider subscribing to our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/treksite

We will hopefully be seeing everyone on the other side very soon, if you have any inappropriate comments you've always wanted to make, now is the time to risk making them because they might not get caught in the backup!

🖖

EDIT: If you use vger.startrek.website or old.startrek.website those will likely take more time to get up and running again. Also the Wiki is sadly going away indefinitely.

Prime Video has handed a series order to Odd Jobs, a future-set adult animated comedy co-created and executive produced by Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Solar Opposites) and Dominic Dierkes (Solar Opposites). The series comes from CBS Studios, with Titmouse serving as the animation studio. It will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

In Odd Jobs, the year is 2127, the world is an extreme late-stage capitalist hellscape. The show follows a reluctant team of gig workers as they travel around the neo Midwest, doing the weirdest most dangerous tasks the ODD JOBS app demands.

February 27th will mark the season 2 premiere of Apple’s Monarch Legacy of Monsters starring Anna Sawai and Kurt Russell.

The teaser released yesterday promises a new kaiju, larger than Godzilla or King Kong.

However, there was another low key announcement 4 weeks ago that Apple has a spinoff already in development.

Right now, the new show is simply known as ‘Untitled Young Lee Shaw Spin-Off’ – here’s a synopsis: “The spinoff series will follow the story of Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative who in 1984 went on a secret mission behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop the Soviets from unleashing a horrific new Titan big enough to destroy the U.S. and turn the tide of the Cold War.”

Wyatt Russell, has consistently had excellent critical reviews, but his profile has been rising since his recent appearance as John Walker in Marvel’s Thunderbolts.

Curious to know if there are other Monsterverse fans here on the instance who would like to discuss.

Editing to add the following quote from the Hollywood Reporter coverage

“Viewers around the world haven’t been able to get enough of ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ since its global debut, and we cannot wait to unleash the electrifying new stories that Joby and the entire cast and creative team have been working on,” said Morgan Wandell, head of international development for Apple TV. “With Joby at the helm, and alongside our terrific partners at Legendary, this new spinoff will kick off an epic Monsterverse expansion that brings audiences even closer to their favorite Titans, along with fantastic character-driven storytelling.”

I'm sharing this not just because it's fun to remember that Stargate is coming back, but also because it's a cool breakdown of the nuts and bolts of a writers' room.

Excerpts from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Fit 11 that pretty much summarize how the AI industry really works, so long as you swap a few words.

All aboard the AI Event Horizon train. 😭

EDIT: Sorry, I set my Gitlab permissions wrong. Should be able to view now.

Despite a rebuff of an initial offer to buy Warner Brothers - Discovery, David Ellison is continuing to talk about it.

Meanwhile, WB-Discovery CEO Zazlav looks to be trying to split off the linear business and market the studios, IP and library.

In the role, he will oversee consumer products, live experiences, publishing, partnerships, and e-commerce for physical products, reporting to Paramount President Jeff Shell. In announcing the hiring, Paramount said Silverman would team with leaders at their key brands, including Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon, in an effort to “bring stories to life in new ways.”

Noticed yesterday that a post to a community on programming.dev wasn't getting any traction. Not even the single downvote every post gets. Same for a post to crazypeople. Looked at the communities on their respective home instances, and neither were there. So I pulled up the federation stats, and both were 6,000-ish behind and now that's up to 8,000-some on both.

We're getting posts from those instances but nothing from here seems to be making it to those instances for the last few days. Both seem to have stopped receiving content from us (which I also assume means votes/comments as well) since 9/27/2025 at 12:21 AM

Lots of interesting comments in the interview.

One that stood out to me:

The Duffers emphasized that they don’t plan on becoming prolific producers of a large stable of shows and films. “We don’t want to become like Bad Robot,” Matt Duffer said, name checking J.J. Abrams’ production company. “Ross and I are incapable of juggling that many things.”

Here's a TechCrunch article on the topic too.

First of all I love this idea, especially for nonprofits, universities and governments.

My biggest question is how moderation will work. The "point" of federation is that each instance can moderate their own way, but presumably the paid moderation will be in the style of mastodon.social, which isn't bad, but not exactly in the spirit of the Fediverse.
