Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

With respect to intangible advantages and water efficiency.

Showers tend to be seen as a water efficient option to wash oneself. Rarely are baths usually taken, to my knowledge.

Here is why this is wrong.

An efficient shower head spends 10 litres per minute. At 10 minutes, 100 litres are consumed for a shower.

A typical bath, depending on size, can consume 100 litres flat.

Therefore, with the exception of showers strictly less than 10 minutes in duration, baths become more water efficient per minute.

Now a shift in focus.

Many people suffer from a chronic shortage of focus. This is no surprise, given the fast pace of modern life.

Get up at 7, be ready by 8, commute to work. Commute back home, optionally cook, eat dinner, sleep, and repeat.

There is no time to slow down. No time for ourselves. No time to bring back focus on what matters.

I argue that people should take more baths as a time and place to think. In quiet and peace. For 10 minutes, or 20, or as long as you need.

Are baths the answer to all our problems? Of course not. It is a way to exercise control over how we spend our time. A signal to ourselves that we are not in a race, and can take a moment for ourselves if we wish.

For any concerned about being soap-free after a bath: stand under a shower for 10 seconds.

Well, first you’re wrong.

But even if you weren’t, that’s gonna be a no from me.

Basically until I see the private jets and the yachts made illegal I’m going to go ahead and do the little things that make me feel more human while I still can.

I'd like to address this view.

In truth this opinion isn't about showers at all.

The people who pollute our world with excessive emissions from private jets will pollute, whether either of us take shorter showers or not.

The solution for excessive emissions is not to pressure ourselves into saving a litre of water at a personal level, because LLM datacentres consume megalitres per day.

If any of us feel better saving some water at a personal level, that is still a good thing.

But we should go beyond that. Go for the throat. Put pressure where it matters and effect change that makes a significant difference.

I’m not sure what math you’re using here. Just as a test one time while I was taking a shower i put the plug in the tub. Just to see how much water would actually accumulate. I used way way way less water during the shower. My showers last typically about 10 minutes, Maybe less.

I started doing this as sort of a paranoid fear that I was wasting water, so I wanted to use as much of the water as I could. 10-20 minutes in the shower, the water doesn't even get above my feet. But it's enough to soak them which feels kind of nice.

In my anecdotal experience I can empty the electric boiler while filling the tub with warm water, but I can't empty it by taking a 20min shower. So bath is a luxury I take very rarely.

I live in Japan. We shower first and get into a bath to relax after clean. Families will often share that bathwater.

Getting into a bathtub dirty is kinda gross to me these days.

I love a quiet bath after work, NGL. I either play music, videos or even yap on Lemmy just chilling and soaking. Life's good! 😀

You have a bath in your house?

An efficient shower head spends 10 litres per minute

You know you can shut down the water when you don't need it? I use it for 30 seconds at most: 5 seconds to have water on the body, 25 seconds to rinse the soap (and I could do less).

5 litres for me, 100 litres for you. You consume 3 weeks of my showers, every day.

Just curious, were you in the military? The common term for this method is a "Navy Shower".

I’d love to, but my tub was meant for showers and it’s too small for a full-size adult to comfortably lay down in. It’s not good. I’d love to go to a public bath like how they do in Japan. No tattoos so I’m good, I think.

Stayed in a hotel with a hot tub in the room. It was a bit small but definitely usable. Bit hotter than I was used to, but it was nice.

An efficient shower head spends 10 litres per minute.

Around here, the standard number is 16, and the "water saving" models 8-9.

At 10 minutes, 100 litres are consumed for a shower.

For me personally, they typical thorough shower takes 3 min, the quick one 1 min (office worker, no serious dirt on my skin). A very comfy, extended one on weekends 5-10 min.

In quiet and peace. For 10 minutes, or 20, or as long as you need.

Agree. I like this argument. I should do it more often.

I will raise that the best way is a mix of the two. Rinse yourself with a quick spray of water/bucket to get yourself wet, soap and clean yourself possibly with a loafer to exfoliate/make more suddy, rinse off all the soap with another spray/bucket, then have a soak in a bath. If the bath is in a insulating tub made of wood, ceramic or plastic it remains quite hot if it has a lid, or even a circulated heater. Can also share the bath water then as you're already clean going in. Uses the least water overall, gets you cleaner than you've ever felt and clears the mind. Also the concept behind public bath houses too and followed by many cultures throughout the ages.

Magnesium soaks are awesome too.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

No, thanks.

After a ten minute bath the water will be cold

[–] colourlessidea@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

Well that’s just not true unless your bath is outdoors or something

[–] m4ylame0wecm@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

If you start with cold water, sure.
