Some people aren't attracted to the money or the person, they just want proximity to power - sometimes to skim that power for themselves, sometimes to hide behind the protection of that power, sometimes to simply affirm a belief that they're powerful.
Trump doesn't need a honey pot - remember, his handlers have to constantly keep reminding him of "hey that's a national secret you can't talk about that" or "maybe don't shout about it in front of an audience of thousands". Why bother with espionage, when you can simply rock up with a briefcase of cash and say "hey I want detailed plans of all your military bases in X region, here's several million dollars."

I see something similar as with that press secretary whatsername: they come from conservative families and have learned early on that a pro-MAGA stance will give them positive attention.
