I managed to kill the mint I was growing last year...

Are you sure?
Very very.
I'd put it in a container within a container within yet another container. That shit spreads
...kinda makes me want to plant that stuff all over my yard. It grows kinda patchy like clover, right?
Let that shit take over and suddenly mowing the lawn will smell AMAZING!
Depending on the type, it may get about 2 to 3 feet tall and develop woody stems. Our contained patch (pavement on 2 sides and the house foundation on the other 2) frequently gets overgrown/bushy by July. Does get little white flowers and attracts all the bees. But I'd dislike having a yard made of the stuff. Woody stem portions get pokey on bare feet, and I'm not sure it'd stay dense enough to keep the other tall plants down.
Bummer. Though not entirely surprising - as pervasive as they sound, if the shape and texture made them a good candidate for lawns, I'm sure it'd have been tried well before my two neurons fired off the idea.
...I do wonder if there's a similar candidate. I don't know jack about what herbs and such actually look like before making it into a jar in my kitchen, but if there is something that grows comparably to clover, feels decent to walk on, and smells decent when trimmed, even if it's not quite as amazing as mint...
I mean, if we're gonna go through the trouble of growing a crop just to cut it and throw it away, it might as well at least smell nice, right?
Or we could do the smart thing and ditch the lawn for a legit herb garden that we can actually consume.... but that kind of logic is a tall order.
I wish. Can't hold its own against the other weeds in our garden.
Put some catnip in and watch everything else fade away
Ooooooh, bonus, your yard will always attract cats!
We have bird feeders and of course it's going to attract mice so the catnip is there for a balance. We have a couple neighbor cats that make their rounds and I never see them going for birds. Always stalking out the mice. Win win!
The Linux one made me spit my coffee. Lmao
Is it sad that I immediately began to worry that mint was yet another causualty of the CDC's destruction when I saw this?
I'm high, and didn't realize that mint connected to all of the things listed. So I thought mint was just another of the things listed. So I began looking for lettuce. Then I saw Linux, and got so confused.
My mom already does - and all she uses it for is for tea, and even so very rarely. Ah well
I pla ted some mint around the house to hopefully make it smell good, some Rosemary as well
It's also a natural pest repellant. Fleas, rats, mice, bed bugs. They all hate the smell, and will avoid it.
Where are my OJ peeps?
Catnip is also.
yeah I was gonna say, I once had mint and it sent the cat berzerk
In Morocco they do this absolutely insane mint tea. You have to pour it about twice to get the right strength and then it has a big brick of sugar.
Also a really nice touch in hot chocolate if you're wanting to make it fancy.
I have mint. Pretty much only use it for pasta and chilli sauces now and then, but it's a very easy "set and forget" plant to have in a box planter.
Mint in pasta?
I'm intrigued. Explain further.
Usually toward the end, I'll crush them into the sauce with chilli flakes. That's my final stage of the sauce while the water goes on boil getting ready for the pasta, along with any last final tweaks of herbs/salt/pepper then too. Better with lamb and/or pork mince.
Goes well finely chopped in white sauces with some lemon too. Usually only do that with chicken.
I have something to try next time I have some fresh mint in the house
You can make pesto with mint instead of basil (though using both its best).
Mmh, Julep
Chewing on a mint leaf is one of life's treasures.
I've tried growing mint in pots but it always gets covered in aphids and whitefly.
Mint is a treasure
