I hate this so much. The part that really gets me is that it's "good" enough that it could absolutely serve as a low effort corporate slop factory for any outfit with a few tens of thousands in computer hardware to trivially churn out absolute garbage that would previously cost tens of thousands per episode at least, while still being completely useless in practice because it's still just a slop gacha. Like it's not a useful, production boosting tech that could also give low-budget creators a way to actually produce their vision (the way something like SFM did for enabling amateurs and hobbyists to start animating with no barrier to entry), it's a random slop generator that makes garbage only suitable for grifters and corporate slop factories.

Also the paired audio and visual generation getting that "good" is fucking horrifying for so many other reasons too. This is something that can only make everything worse, like those fucking chatbots that are poisoning everything.

Why do chuds even like Star Trek?

[–] orlando@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

i've written about this elsewhere but my working idea is that star trek abandoned any true claim to being a socialist setting after gene roddenberry died and that even then he was working from second hand material like the counterculture of the day filtered through his american lens. the borg collective and the focus on ~~americans~~ humans in space when they are surrounded by alleged equals are prime examples of this. it carries the seeds inherent to liberalism that grow into fascism, just enough for these chuds to inhabit the fandom comfortably and eventually move to appropriate it.

Media literacy is not usually their strong suit. Probably also watched it as kids and nostalgic for it before coalescing their current beliefs and enjoy the aesthetics for the same reason we do, but conveniently gloss over the utopian post money society with "Zefram Cochrane made the warp drive because he wanted to get rich under capitalism!" which absolves / reinforces the system as something inherently worthwhile because innovation has never existed under different modes of production.

I think it literally just boils down to the fact that it was a relatively popular pop culture thing when they were kids. The pop culture when they were kids was good because it was before The Woke, that's literally it.

It's definitely this combined with a lack of media literacy (99% of the time) and/or a mental block they've set up to avoid thinking about it too hard (it's just a fun show/movie, why do you have to make it political!?).

Because right wingers love appropriating leftist stuff.

performative 'nerd/geekdom' and media illiteracy

I saw an AI short come up on YouTube yesterday that was about some old steam train. Not only was the train itself an AI abomination, but the "facts" were themselves complete bullshit. Apparently this train didn't use wheels!!!?!

It makes me wonder if there was a human involved at any stage of production, uploading or even at the creation of the channel.

I want to drown these people.

Thank god that old.reddit is blocked and I don't have to view this niko-sleep

I can somehow still access it but I used my free will to not open the link at all.

okay but "Riker has spoken of this" when talking about the "goon lord" made laugh

idk how far i got into it before I turned it off but there were 1 or 2 bits that got a chuckle out of me, like the turn to Data's painting but it's a stick figure

but it wasn't funny enough to cover for the AI jank and just bad writing

It's always Seinfeld. What is their obsession with this show? They shoe horn it into absolutely everything their dirty fingers touch.
