From an American-

I'm sure by now you all have seen our government's 'official response' to your wildfires. I saw that, and as an American I am beyond appalled. Please know that the public statements made by our government do not reflect the thoughts and beliefs of the majority of the American people.

When the US had wildfires, Canada sent us significant support including numerous firefighting aircraft, air crews, and support equipment. This was not a small token contribution, it made a real difference. It saved lives and property and forest. That is how neighbors and friends are supposed to help each other out, and we appreciated the hell out of it. It is not forgotten.

To hear that our 'official response' to your wildfires is to threaten... I have no words to describe the feeling. I am proud to be American, I love my country, but today I am ashamed. That these things are being said as representative of me and my countrymen... it is beyond shameful. We are supposed to be better than this. Better allies, better neighbors, better humans. I am ashamed and angry that my government is representing me and my fellow Americans in this manner.

I can only say that the majority of Americans do not feel this way. Forget the propaganda you see on the news (and it is mostly propaganda). The people of this country love our northern friends, we feel for you. We don't want to annex Canada or punish you for a natural disaster or any of this crap. We want you all to be safe. We want to help.

THAT is who we are, even if we suck at electing politicians that represent that belief.

Stay safe. Be well. We love you.

They're tired of our shit. Either we fucking stand up this election in November or we shut up or preferably both. Even if we fight back against the regime, we're going to just be the idiots misbehaving again.

"nOt AlL oF uS!" Sure. Too late. We elected a fucking maniac, twice. A third of the population still side with him, another 20% still vote that way.

Anyhow. Your message is kind and as a Seattleite and neighbor, I too sympathize.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 51 points 1 month ago

Thank you for being one of the blindingly small number of Americans to recognize this.

You're absolutely correct. These performative "Please tell me I'm a good person" apologies ring hollow. It's just #notallmen all over again.

I'm sure OP is a lovely person. But we don't want to hear it. We are not Catholic priests waiting to absolve left-wing Americans of their sins, and quite frankly, we're too busy shovelling our way out of all your shit to give a damn if any of you are good people or not.

[–] puppinstuff@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 month ago (10 children)

Thank you for saying this. I’m glad that the realization is finally permeating.

Vote when you can. But the chance of a center-left democrat half of the time is nowhere near enough to restore the generational trust lost. People who care deeply must organize, protest, and dismantle these systems so they cannot be used again in the future of coexistence we hope to achieve.

Show us with actions. Stand up for your own people at risk, and for those US expansionist politicians and their sycophants are targeting around the world.

As a Canadiain, please stop. Fix your shit. "the majority of us aren't like this" I don't buy it. your people voted this clown into office...twice. And before that you voted Bush jr into office...twice. It's the same song and dance from you.

Stop. Apologizing. I'm tired of seeing americans apologize and then do jack all about it. I don't want your love, I don't need it. All we and a good chunk of us Canadians want is for you americans to hopefully, one day, figure it out. not just "get good" for 4 to 8 year stints and then vote in another right-wing nutjob.

We don't care what you people think. "Oh the Americans are blaming us for something else and slapping another tariff 'on us' so what?" We've moved on, I suggest you do the same. Now I know how people getting out of a relationship with one person who just won't "let go" feel.

We would rather you accept that you all collectively fucked up yet again and not try and ask for our forgiveness. again, we don't care. and stop saying "not all of us" it's such bullshit.

Just stop talking and do something. Actions speak louder than words, I don't want nor accept your apology.

[–] datavoid@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 month ago (4 children)

As a Canadian I can understand your annoyance, and definitely agree that Americans who feel guilty should take action at home.

However, it's not like Canada doesn't vote for idiots too. The country is more or less split between left and right, and the two rich provinces are never on the left. Ontario continues to vote in Fords, and don't get me started on Alberta. The last federal election easily could have gone conservative too.

[–] Polyphilic@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

We may vote for idiots, but we absolutely do not vote into pedophiles, human traffickers, criminals, etc.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Really? Canada has a rich history of doing just that. We just dress it up differently and forget our history instead of learning from it.

Remember Doug Ford?

[–] Polyphilic@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

For one, we're talking federal.

And two, is he in the epstein files? Did he traffic humans?

What crimes has he been convicted of?

[–] Peanutbjelly@sopuli.xyz 16 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Canada should absolutely be worried about the same cult idiocy running rampant. The thing is that a large part of this worry is intentional USA meddling from the current regime and surrounding groups like the heritage foundation and ATLAS network pushing shit like the convoy, maple maga, and Alberta separatism.

The last one is freaky because it's what the USA generally does to a country before trying to claim that the people want the oil to be liberated by the USA. Makes the aggressive threats about the smoke even more appalling.

We can't do as much about our own problems when they are mostly coming from across the border. Hopefully progressives globally can cooperatively figure out how to actively prevent this fascist shit from taking over, or neo-liberal faux progressives from claiming to be the resistance while servings the corruption and oligarchs

To OP personally, you are appreciated and I hope we can all find actions and methods of cooperation that can save us from this spreading cancer.

Thanks for the kind words, but I'll be frank. Wanna help? Stop making everything about yourself (individually and as a nation), go fix your country's broken-ass system, and come visit us and buy our stuff if you like in the meantime. If you want our trust back, figure out how the worst living caricature of America achieved the highest political office a second time, and how will you collectively prevent that from happening again? Personally, I'll come celebrate when it happens, but that will only be the start of a generation's worth of work to rebuild what was lost.

Yours truly,

Canadian fed up with the constant BS from the states.

"do not reflect the thoughts and beliefs of the majority of the American people."

Bullshit. The majority of people who cared enough to vote, voted for this outcome. The rest of your country doesn't give a shit.

You elected a fucking convicted felon, rapist, child molester and known con man to lead your country. He started a party of MAGA filled with the most deplorable cunts your country can offer. This fat fuck and MAGA members attacks and insult long time allies and partners.

When the US had wildfires, we sent our people to help. Our people have died doing this. This is what allies and friends do.

Next time you're on fire, I really hope Canada turns our back on you and says "Burn, bitch." I know we won't because we still collectively think of you as allies that might get their shit figured out. But the US can eat a big fucking sack of dicks as far as I'm concerned. I fucking tired of this shit.

Quit asking for forgiveness and fix your fucking house. Until then, I don't care what you have to say.

As an American who despises the administration and how we're treating our allies, I agree with you. There's no point in apologizing or trying to save face or whatever. This country needs to eat bags of dicks until they finally suffer enough to quit doing the same stupid ass shit.

Please stop sending help. Please stop acting like we're still normal. Until Trump and enough of his supporters get beaten in the face with the consequences of their actions, they will not stop.

We stopped educating everyone with less money than the average middle class. You cannot reason with them because 1) they struggle with logic, and 2) they accept wholesale, without question, the utter lies and propaganda of the monied right-wing. They will simply have to learn the hard way, by suffering.

Talking to most of my neighbors, family members, and coworkers, the significant majority do not support trump, and I would say at least half are very vocally anti-Trump.

I won't pretend there aren't way too many shitheel Americans. But it's wrong to imply that the majority of Americans support Trump. And to do it so confidently just makes you lose all credibility to whatever point you are making. Look at this approval rating which is literally a measure of how many Americans approve of him. And senator, and governor, and mayor and every other elected official who has even the slightest bit of authority over anything.

The more people who can work together toward the common goal of getting rid of the fascists currently destroying your country the faster you can get on with the task of preventing this from happening again.

The USA has a long road ahead of them if they hope to become the country they have always told themselves that they are.

Please know that the public statements made by our government do not reflect the thoughts and beliefs of the majority of the American people.

I can only say that the majority of Americans do not feel this way.

Always making up excuses for oneself. Always failing to see anything beyond the individual responsibility. Feeling guilty for whoever’s on the receiving end of bullying but not really doing anything to stop it.

This administration is a representation of the current state of the US population, and you’re just one more grain of dirt where it sprouts. You don’t get to opt out of this just because you know it’s fucked up.

Boo Hoo. I'm really sick of reading how sorry you are when you repeatedly elect scumbags like Bush Jr. or Trumpenfuhrer and then think everything is OK when you elect a Weimarcrat. Read a few history books (if capable) and find out what to do when confronted with an authoritarian or unresponsive government. A lot of the rest of the world understands that as bad as Trump is, he is merely a symptom of a deeply sick and diseased society. Yourself , like a lot of Americans, think a strongly worded tweet somehow absolves them of blame. It does not. Fix your s**t and stop whining online.

Yeah, another American here, I am absolutely appalled and disgusted by this, and frankly by my own countrymen broadly.

Its up to us to put a stop to this horrendous madness, and I strongly fear ... we won't be able to.

I fear the upcoming midterms will basically be stolen by Trump, and at that point shit will get even more wild... more consitutional crisis? Something approximating a balkan style civil war? Fascist crackdown? Jan 6th type bullshit, but in many locations, backed by or carried out by ICE?

Guard the Leaf, friends... Keep standing that guard.

Its up to us to put a stop to this horrendous madness,

Yes it is. I'm glad to see that at least one American is aware of that

and I strongly fear ... we won't be able to.

As do I.

And from what I can see, that fear is completely reasonable.

Stay strong, neighbour.

Work together with your fellow citizens. That's the only way you will be able to take back your country.

We know it's not all of you (okay, maybe not the internet tough guys here, but Canadians IRL). Bonus points for adding a French version.

I would say, consider if you should really love a country if it does bad things. The US isn't Nazi Germany (yet?), but it's not what it was in the 90's, either. Professing your love of America is kind of mandatory civic piety in America, but, that's actually a red flag itself.

No sympathy, please. Our elected government, voted in for a second term by Americans too God damn dumb to realize they were getting conned, erased 100 years of progress in six months. All through propaganda aimed at REAL America. Middle States, southern states, predominately white states, where more Americans live maleducated lives in poverty, working as manual labor in yesterdays industries because they weren't afforded the luxuries of other states. The imbalance of power is wilder than I've ever experienced. Someone said "send help." While some of you scoffed at this plea, or just shit all over it, I can feel the desperation. I'm about as far left as I can get without removing walls of logic. We literally have concentration camps. An SS of fuckers too scared to join the military and too fucking dumb to be cops abducting folks, while onlookers are fired upon so these fucks can protect their identities (black and latinx Americans working for ICE can suck a .22, anything white that moves in groups of 4 or more males, shoot on sight).

Uneducated Americans with generational hatred toward anything different than themselves. Their pappy's pappy hated everything other than white straight people, and that shit gets handed down like a fucking family heirloom. I know. I had to break those chains in my family. Parents have died, other family members, formwr close friends, and I refuse to shed a tear for any of them. The first time they voted him in, I told these people I would never speak to them again. Now my friend and family circle is just me, wife, and cat, but I can also sleep well at night knowing I wasn't a hypocrite or bending in my beliefs.

Which brings me to action. I believe I am doing as much as I can in the interest of my safety, the safety of my wife and cat, and the safety of other Americans (and nonamericans) regardless of political alignment. I struggle with self control in volatile situations. Regardless of strategy, andvance knowledge, scenario, my brain abandons logic and goes on the offensive. No flight, only fight. Never unjustly, in my opinion, at least if you consider yourself antifascist and subscribe to those beliefs.

I've also been to prison. I didn't enjoy it, and although nothing bad happened to me aside from a week-long migraine, I'll never place myself in a position where I could find myself coming out the other end locked-uo because I was fighting for my rights. Not sure what jails/prisons other Americans been in, but no bueno. Shout out to Catshit, MParker, and Texas.

So action... I want to burn it all down. I fantasize about it (and more!). The thought of certain inevitable deaths fill me with enthusiasm, fire. I don't want to be passionate about any of this, but I am because other people living in America are losing their rights to fucking exist. Meanwhile, shitheads like me want nothing more than to avenge these nameless, faceless fellow Americans and immigrants. I probably don't like these people (i like few), but they have rights, and therefore worth fighting for. I would love for all of us to collectively go John Wick on the likes of the far right, but unlike those MAGAts, some of us are just too wise to do anything that could fail so miserably. I'd love to go strength in numbers with all of you fellow people wanting to fight back, but where the fuck is everyone? I'm in a RED AF state. My local antifa is us. Assuming the cat isn't a fascist piece of shit. What can I do beyond the writing, blogging, calling (might as well punch yourself in the balls twice instead), showing up? When I travel, so do my stickers, masks, and my get fucked bag. I'm unapologetically antifascist. I also hate all other Americans, including those of us too pussy or too fucking locked down in middle class purgatory with a career in a dead state, a cross species family settled into a nice single family home, just enough money to be able to afford the hottest new game eight months after it's release on deep discount used through GameFly and still be able to eat in. Sounds like heaven, and compared to the atrocities happening around the world, I can't complain. I also can't march up to the granite stairs armed to the teeth like the Jan 6 fuckers. Precedent suggests I'd be DOA. We need a militia, or at least thirty middle-aged fucks like myself willing to live out our fever dreams in the name of saving democracy. I have no friends. For fucks sake, I spend time lurking here. Who you think I am?

This is unprecedented. We're not taught shit about fascism in school. I learned on my own in college after reading books suggested by likeminded people. We don't know what to do. Voting has been our weapon, by design by our forefathers (whom were also likely scumbag pedophiles), and now that it has been proven ineffective, we're kinda at a loss. So we protest, peacefully until some homophobe gets butt hurt over rainbows or someshit. Then we're persecuted, arrested, lives and careers wrecked. Unless you die a folk hero, you're just another cow on the tracks. We have concentration camps. An SS abducting people REGARDLESS of citizenship status. Mass survelence. Unprecedented. Meanwhile, when we're not protesting, we're doing arts and crafts for protesting, or being wage slaves making just enough money to afford food and water. If you have a pet or, God forbid, a family, and you're not making $120,000 on a cushy part-time schedule, where's the fucking time, money, and energy necessary to organize and fight? We're boned. The only way I truly see this ending is in another civil war. With all of us so integrated, it will literally be next door neighbor vs next door neighbor. We could use an intervention from abroad, but we don't deserve one. Or at least HALF of Americans don't deserve one. Some of us still trying to fight the good fight against literal evil, equipped with nothing but our wits. Voting has become sooo convoluted, the average American is probably reluctant to even participate. You should see the ballots. I'm currently working on my PhD in my late 40s, and I have to read, reread, and reread again some of the shit on these ballots. No fucking way Earl from the Creek gonna know half the words on that sumbish, let alone hit an option correctly with that pencil eraser and those meth shakes.

It's bad. Most all of us are fucking assholes. I hate people who look like me, because people who look like me are the villains. Not defending OP per se, but maybe this was their way of expressing discontent with America as an American. I hate the post too, don't get me wrong, but some of us are struggling with the absolute absurdity of all this, want it to end immediately, are willing to help, but haven't a clue how aside from using the tools we were given. They could give a fuck about my 2nd ammendement rights if I roll up armed to the teeth wanting to "talk."

Don't give us a break, but don't assume we're all behind this shitshow. This can happen anywhere, and it happens fast. No political party is any better than the other, because they're all politicians. But even the less evil side can't get their shit together enough to combat this.

This is long. Sorry.

  • Just another American

Most Americans may not want to annex Canada if you put that to a poll, but they voted for someone who would, with their eyes wide open. Or willingly stayed in an information bubble that allowed them to do so.

Hey friend,

I'm glad you condemn the position of the US government on this matter. As for the "from the American" part, I would be a little... careful.

Sadly (as much as I wish you were), you are not really representative of the American public. Over half of the public voted for the current administration. Even with the midterms coming, almost half is still going to keep on voting for the current administration. The hostile position of the American government does not belong to a small crazy minority.

I love you back, friend. I'm sorry you have to live through this government. I'm sure that we share the same core values. I'm sure we share the same desire for freedom, love and happiness for ourselves and others. I love you a lot for that.

But again. You are NOT America. The United states has shown irreconcilable hostility to us recently. We cannot base the sovereignty and well being of our country based on the internal political whims of another. Going forward, we have to prepare for the worst. We cannot rely on the US as our "old, trusted ally". Rather, we have to view the US as a neighbor with expansionist ambitions, from whom we have received threats of annexation multiple times.

Thus, in the tier of foreign relationships, we have to put the US in the same tier as Russia, China and India. Except, the US becomes much bigger of a threat due to our economic interdependence and our large border.

Sadly, this position of Canada (the government and most of the public) will not change till the US can demonstrate decades long stability in terms of a foreign policy that considers Canada an ally.
