A random thought I had. I think the answer is no, but I'm not that certain. Convince me please.

You really want to test the limits of this sub.

"No stupid questions, please"

I believe the answer is yes. Most vegans are vegans because they don’t want to exploit or harm any other creature. Picking your own nose implies that you consent to that activity and are not being exploited

[-] Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Wot if there's little beasties up your nose tho

But you cant be 100% full on real vegan?

Some medicine is made with animal... stuff.

Glue, fertilizers(for growing vegan food...), and much more.

Im not vegan but... i dont think its possible anyway.

Just be nice to the animals and if you can, buy from farms that raise the animals properly (yes these exist, but they are small, and thus more expensive)

[-] Devi@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Normal fertilisers are vegan, it's only the organic ones that aren't.

[-] billbasher@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I suppose one can’t be 100% vegan without completely going off grid and producing everything themselves. Modern vegetable farming techniques result in a large insect loss. My used car has leather seats. I can’t afford to buy a new one without them. Medicines these days say if they are vegan or not.

There is a large difference between causing rape/child theft/murder (dairy) murder (meat) and accidental insect killings though

[-] squiblet@kbin.social 12 points 1 year ago

No one is, in fact, allowed to do that.

[-] floey@rabbitea.rs 6 points 1 year ago

I would hope so since it is pretty impossible not to eat your own boogers. If you don't know you swallow a lot of mucus, even if you are a serial nose blower, it just goes down your throat from the back of your nose.

Yes.

  1. The main reasons for vegetarianism are a., to avoid killing or a.i unduly harming animals, particularly a.ii, without consent, b. to avoid environmental damage, or c., to save money.

  2. Because of point 1.a, vegetarians eat animal products, like milk, eggs and honey.

Under point 2., bogeys are clearly okay to eat as an animal product that doesn't kill the animal that produces it. That's probably sufficient for our purposes but lets check against 1. to make sure

No harm comes to you from eating your own bogeys (except indirect social harm if other people find out and want to stop hanging out with you), so that covers 1.a.i. Obviously you consent to eating them, so that covers a.ii, too. There's zero environmental consequences to eating bogeys (b). Eating your own bogeys won't cost any money, so that covers c.

In conclusion, go ahead and eat your bogeys, champ.

Just don't do it near me.

Because of point 1.a, vegetarians eat animal products, like milk, eggs and honey.

The production of all three involves harm to the animals and is done without their consent.

[-] Ketos@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Automatic milking machines prove otherwise. Cows stand in line to get milked and often have to be skipped because they’ve been milked already

[-] howrar@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

The part they didn't consent to was being in pain from overproduction of milk, which is something we imposed on them through selective breeding. If we didn't do that, they'd just go about their merry ways making enough to feed their calves and stop making milk when they've grown enough to feed themselves.

[-] seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 year ago

They also don't consent to being artificially inseminated and having their calves taken away from them.

[-] MichaelScarn@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Depends on how meaty they are?

[-] prostetnic_jeltz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

There is no harm to the donor. Should be comparable to milk or honey.

[-] seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 1 year ago

There is harm from milk and honey, though, which is why vegans are against it.

[-] Ondergetekende@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 year ago

Vegans and vegetarians are allowed to eat meat. They just choose not to. They are equally allowed to eat boogers. Most just choose not to.

[-] Nemo@midwest.social 3 points 1 year ago

Best answer. No one's policing your veganism but yourself.

[-] geogle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

... in mixed company.

[-] angelsomething@lemmy.one -1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I think it’s vegans that have an issue with it I’d imagine. Pretty sure they don’t swallow either.

[-] Candelestine@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Vegetarian yes, vegan no.

edit: Y'alls know the basic, most commonly used definitions are just that vegetarians won't eat animals but will consume other animal products, whereas veganism is about consuming no animals or animal products, right?

So, milk. Vegetarians can drink it, strict veganism prohibits it. Boogers are no different, an animal product.

I swear, kids these days.

[-] FeeshyFish@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Vegans can eat their own boogers. Their whole disposition is on the basis of ethical consumption and consent. A cow can't consent to being milked. We've bred them and in a vegans eye's, exploited them for so long that, that's just the status quo. Similarly bees collect honey to feed themselves. They don't understand we take what we deem is a surplus to them. So they never consented to share with us.

If you pick your own boogers, you consented to do so. That means it's ethical to eat.

[-] mrbubblesort@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Ah ok, I got it. So yours are ok but your friend's are off-limits, yeah?

If they consent it’s okay.

There are vegans who swallow semen.

[-] dandroid@dandroid.app 2 points 1 year ago

Disgusting. Tell me where these vegans are so I can avoid them.

[-] Candelestine@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago

You're generalizing one set of motives for all vegans. Veganism is a behavior, the reasons why they do it can vary from individual to individual.

As a categorization, though, the no-animal-products is the basic thing they all have in common. While some do make exceptions for different things, they're still considered exceptions to the basic rule.

For all you know, it could be a religious observance.
