A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else
Rules
- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
- A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
- Posts must be original/unique
- Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS
If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

It's nothing personal. It's just how the world is, and a lot of us hate it.

I know right? Everything feels so serious all the time and it's really feeling like lots of people are missing the point of it all, which there is no point
That's why I like federated social media so much.
Things are organic here and on Mastodon, so it's less of a popularity contest and more about actual, quality content.
No one really cares what happens on social media. Just don't play.
Yeah, though I do remember something about politics and the president of the United States getting wrapped up in it somehow. Vaguely remember. Its not like that has any effect on me, though. Its not like every political movement and shifting of power will be linked to vast information campaigns swirling around the collection of data. I bet if people could take all the information on the internet and sort it through some sort of intelligant machine they could seize more control over industry and surveillance. Its a crazy idea, I know.

Social media is just for finding events. That's it. Once you're in person there is no contest. If you're interested and curious about those around you then you'll be popular.

If you consider this from an evolutionary standpoint, and I'm too lazy for this to be a research paper so just winging it for now...
The human race is built upon many layers. Some of those layers are animal while others are highly social. Think clans and tribes for thousands of years. If you didn't fit in that was it for you, it was the collective that made survival possible. Because of this we constantly judge and compare ourselves. It's ingrained in us through a long succession of embodiments that cared where they stood in the pecking order of the tribe and how they looked to attract a mate. That's what brought you to your existence. Old habits die hard, and you are seeing them manifest in different ways, we are walking around with the hyper-sensitive, status-obsessed, mate-seeking hardware of a hunter-gatherer, but living in a world of social media.

I deliberately eschew attention. I make my little comments and each one exists on its own. On rare occasions where I develop any kind of meager following, I feel like I'm no longer being me and instead I have to perform me and I hate it.
It's okay to not want to play the game.
What do you mean? Like politics and stuff? Like you need to run a super popular campaign if you aren't running unopposed kind of thing?
I'm not a huge fan of big social media, so the fediverse has been nice for that. Though lately even lemmy and Mastodon have been feeling a bit big.
Social media is keeping up with the Jones' turned to up to 11. At best assume you're getting the sugar coated version of events. That's the facade in present day, a social media post. Nothing on there internet is real, and now AI has made everyone a Photoshop expert.
