Well, the usmnt have crossed a major milestone on our path to being a proper soccering nation. Not in a sporting sense -- this was a fairly typical USMNT performance in our modern era on the pitch, considering the expanded field -- but in the "involved in a major corruption controversy" sense. I've felt USSF have been a bit Boy Scout up until now -- we were more likely to be opening an indictment against FIFA a la 2015 than handing over suitcases full of cash -- but we have made it clear that we are willing to pay to win. I'm glad to see that the corruption is necessary but not sufficient (I would prefer it also not be necessary but at least it isn't also sufficient) to win a World Cup, and I'm glad the US crashed out before we set any kind of record as it would be very irritating to have to mention 1930 and 2026 and then explain why neither of them really count when explaining what the "best USMNT performance of all time" is. Hopefully this'll be the last time I see us pull a stunt like this, cuz it was really embarrassing, and I hope someday to see us play el sexto partido in a men's world cup. See y'all at the women's World Cup next year; we're gonna be a lot more trouble in that tournament.

So glad it's over after the red card nonsense. Most people around me agreed that even tho we thought the card itself was a bad call, the rescission was ridiculous and made us look like shmucks. Then you had the others...

Anyway take another L, Donald.

This is pretty much where I landed. After Trump's call about the red card any victory would have been tainted. I'm glad the issue can be put to rest now. At the very least, this USA team seemed to generate a lot of hype and interest in the sport. Hopefully next World Cup our participation won't be disgraced by our shameful politics.

I'm one of those boring "protect the players" people so my only complaint about the card as issued is that it isn't called that tight all the time when it should be.

The Trump effect

Country that cheats at everything cheats in World Cup.

Loses in embarrassing fashion.

More at 11.

Fuck the USA. Their media and fans genuinely thought they could win the whole thing. They had the easiest path in the tournament to the round of 16 and then got the utter shit beat out of them in their own country. Words can't describe how good I feel today after that last night.

Relax Francis, it's a game that doesn't matter. This is not important.

"USA wins" omg were going to the quarter finals! This is the greatest win is US Soccer in history!

"USA loses" its just a game and doesn't matter. No one cared about it anyway.

Americans are so predictable.

Nice hate boner you've got going.

Thanks. It's been going strong since last night.

Americans care about soccer for the time they are playing in the world cup. We think it's fun when we win at all. Children play soccer in the US, then when they get older they leave and go play other sports.

Children also play American football in the US and you guys can't stop fellating college students playing the game for free.

Lemmy users not having a full crash out about some trivial shit challenge: impossible.

I had high hopes coming into this game but the US were humbled hard by Belgium just like facing the Netherlands last knockouts the US made it to. This US performance was more of what I was expecting for the team at this point in time. In the games leading up to the WC the US seemed disjointed and like players weren't their usual selves. In the groups it was the opposite but now a regression back to the mean. We are slowly improving as a footballing nation but are still severely behind pretty much all the big European teams still.

Even as an Australian I was never that against the US until this game. They played some good football up until this point (you can only beat what's in front of you) and were deserving of their spot in the final 16. Openly cheating and then painting yourselves as the victims is way over the line, though, and I was laughing as the delusions of grandeur of this clown nation were broadcast around the world for all to see.

I don’t think the US would’ve won had pedolf not got involved but it would’ve been a closer game. The US team didn’t show up and the Belgians looked motivated.
