Plasma and apps for mobile also getting overhauled for 6.

It's not only Plasma on the desktop that is getting a new version, as Devin Lin explains in his blog post,

https://espi.dev/posts/2023/12/plasma-mobile-towards-6/

developers are working hard on getting #PlasmaMobile 6 ready for the #megarelease scheduled for February.

Hear me out... Maybe every app on your desktop doesn't need to start with the same letter.

Gwenview, Dolphin, digiKam, AudioTube, Elisa, NeoChat, GCompris...

Not sure what you're trying to say here.

KDE apps that don't start with the letter "K". Also, many KDE apps a not tied to any particular desktop or indeed platform.

[-] baggins@lemmy.ca 1 points 10 months ago

That's cool and all but none of those apps are in this screen shot?

@Bro666 @baggins just as a suggestioni: knames are cool, and I miss them

For better or for worse, starting every project with a K does make KDE software very recognisable. Their themes don't jam with my setup so I use it as a way to avoid most of them, but it's solid branding. KDE users used to be able to do the same thing with Gnome applications, but Gnome has switched away from that approach.

KOrganizer should just be filed under "o", though. And I don't know what krfb does, but it needs a name users can pronounce.

[-] merthyr1831@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

"kurrrrfb" not pronounceable for you?

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 10 points 10 months ago

Cool!

What kind of devices would this run on?

[-] merthyr1831@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

I'm not a Linux mobile expert but I think you can get it on a handful of older devices like the OnePlus 6. Limited support sadly since ARM insists on not enforcing UEFI (among other things)

I can't say how happy this upgrade makes me. I love this style of home screen so much more than Halcyon (although I understand the reason that needed to exist), and the most common complaint I've heard from people trying out #PlasmaMobile was the stability, so I really feel like this is an important one-two punch for improving #PlasmaMobile.

I'm still looking for ways that I can significantly help #PlaMo out without money or coding skills to spare. Call me if y'all need an icon, ok?

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social does kmail works in Plasma Mobile? Can we use it to fetch emails from google for example?

[-] bart@mastodon.fam-ribbers.com 1 points 10 months ago

@itsoulos @kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social It works of course, but it's interface isn't mobile friendly at all. Merkuro will be a better fit, it uses the same backend as KMail (Akonadi) anyway.

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Docked mode is exciting! That's the kind of thing I'm looking for. Getting a desktop session on an external monitor when you plug in would be amazing

[-] njordomir@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Same here. I prefer to do 9/10 tasks on a desktop vs a phone, but sometimes I leave the house to go places. I would love to be able to dock my phone and carry a folding mouse rather than having to manage syncing a device for each stage of portability.

In the postmarketOS website I saw that my device ( smasung A6 2018) isn't supported. Do you have any suggestions?
