Im so glad my parents are pretty cool. I haven't lived with em for a while and the realities of rent and pay that I deal with has radicalized them further than anything. They get that this was absolutely not the deal we were promised or one that represents a working society and that they got the goods at the last moment. They lucked out pretty good and they know it, I dont get judged for needing help with rent, my boss and landlord do. They know I work hard.
As far as my politics go, they know where I stand. I can explain myself quite well and have given a fuck abiut politics since I was 8. I think they're pretty proud they raised a principled and socially conscientious kid and while im sure they'd like it if I wasnt stubborn to my own detriment, I think they kinda like having an iron willed fuck up compared to my basic ass cousins. We also play video games together. They like my crust as fuck friends. My dad sometimes gets a little lippy when we're drinking hard together and then gets frustrated when I overwhelm him with arguments and what books to read if he wants to be sure im not making shit up. But we also get along well enough that we like to get a little wasted together a couple times a year.
Never put too much work into converting your parents. It'll either be super easy or it will be pretty much impossible. Mine are already sucdems so it was easier.
Edit: basically they're Roseanne and John Goodman but from the 90s before things got all weird.
