Of course arenanet are in the best position to make a new mmo, I can't wait. Gw2 made me get into illustration.

[–] Brewchin@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

I can see why. The loading/travel screen art blew me away on release and still does now.

I don't often get my hopes up for new games any more, but I kinda have for this.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 31 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Several thousand hours in gw2. Really liked it.

I hope they keep the stuff I liked. Solo friendly but other people are around to casually join up or whatever. No level grinding. No gear grind.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Maybe a little less storage management, though.

[–] Takios@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 week ago

how else are they going to sell more inventory slots? :D

[–] Diurnambule@jlai.lu 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Truly that the core, if you look stuck or having an hard time, passing people often help.

Guild Peace when?

[–] Nikko882@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. I loved GW2, even though I haven't kept up with it in a while, so I'm interested to see what they are planning for the sequel. Orr also seems like a fun setting. I live the descriptions in GW2 of Orr pre-sinking. (Also, the gods (presumably) saying "we promise you magic" is funny, considering how horribly that ends in this case.)

However, GW2 is dripping in style, and I love the painterly style it has. I'm not seeing that same style in this trailer. It looks kinda generic, tbh. (The design of the mount is stellar, though.)

Also, being set in the past means that the Sylvari don't exist yet, and the Charr are still the "great enemy", so those two are out. We seem to have gained Kodan as a playable race, though (probably means no Norn as well, since they would have quite a bit of overlap). Also, this seemed like the perfect chance to give the people the Tengu they have wanted, but playable Tengu remains a dream, it seems.

[–] anzo@programming.dev 1 points 5 days ago

Perhaps Tengu is left so that it can be part of an extension when everything else is properly set

[–] Snickeboa@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I’m hyped for this for the most part. But you pointed out what I felt but couldn’t put my finger on: the visual style does look kinda generic in the trailer. I hope that they evolve this into a more unique or stylized style.

Fashion Wars 3!? In this economy?

[–] Statick@feddit.online 15 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I'm excited for this but really upset that the beta is in FALL OF 2027...

And like most mmo launches, it’s really just an EA launch with the real content to be reworked and added later.

When GW2 came out, lots of GW1 fans didnt really connect with it.

Hope we GW2 fans are not gonna feel the same about GW3.

But even if GW3 was not made for GW2 audience, we are still getting another one.

Both current GW games are different and good.

Oh damn??? Looks like MMORPGs aren't dead after all. I would have loved to see some gameplay but it's nice knowing there's an honest to god new mmo being made by a big studio.

[–] MrQuallzin@pie.eyeofthestorm.place 6 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Sure hope they're not dead, FF XIV is thriving!

[–] DillDough@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago

Same with gw2 and wow but we're talking 21, 16, and 14 year old games here lol, every "major" new MMO since those 3 has died... it's not exactly inaccurate to call the genre dead.

Shout-out the return of Gloria Victis next week too, best pvp MMO I've ever played, the sieges are insane.

[–] syklemil@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 week ago

Speaking of ffxiv, if I had a penny for every MMO trailer with tapestry artwork I've seen come out this year, I'd have two pennies, etc

(FFXIV Evercold trailer being the first one)

I look forward to playing 5 years after release once ANET has changed their mind about core design choices a few times, fluctuated between unique classes and homogenization, and exhaust their thesaurus to be different than other MMOs. I know that sounds sarcastic, but I really do like GW2. I actually have it open on the other monitor right now- I'm in Mistlock smelting mithril ingots. I'm not sure why ANET has such a difficult time sticking to design choices, but eventually it seems to work out.

[–] mintiefresh@piefed.ca 11 points 1 week ago

Wow. Pretty excited to see this. I loved GW2 a lot.

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I hope the combat has stronger identity in this one. Really love GW2 but the combat felt very flimsy and each identity seems like tried to be different from usual rpg roles and never had a solid identity that felt as good as classic roles.

GW1 hands down is one of the most creative online RPGs

GW2 has nothing of what made guildwars fun for me

hopefully GW3 is a mix of both ? open world MMO with the skills system of GW1

I'm a huge fan. But this isn't making me throw away my legendaries to start anew.

[–] DillDough@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago

They already stated they will continue simultaneous development of all 3 games. Plus Anet genre hops each game, 3 is going to be more action adventure, so no reason to stop playing 1 or 2 even after 3 hits it's stride.

[–] LuckyFogic@kbin.earth 6 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I'm genuinely very excited for this, but I have to ask: What use is this video as far as an advertisement? What does the video add beyond what an official headline with GW3 on it couldn't? There's no gameplay, information, nothing but some pretty pictures and a voice-over. The most I could gather is there's some form of rock climbing, there's mounts, and there are classes. But even some of that might be off.

[–] DireTech@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago

Yeah aside from the mounts this looked like some generic unreal engine demo using generic assets. They’d be better off just showing the logo until they have some actual content to show.

Kinda par for the course for guild wars PR though. GW2 had some weirdly bad promo videos.

[–] Overspark@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It shows off:

  • where it takes place (ancient Orr)
  • that that place is mostly a wilderness (as the game takes place a thousand years before the first one)
  • some playable races (Kodan bears are new, Asura and humans are not, Charr won't be in this one due to the time period)
  • different mount types (flying dragon is probably a mount too)
  • different modes of movement, which is a large focus of this game
  • gliders
  • the style they're going for, evolved from GW2

And I've probably missed a ton of things. Once you really start looking at it there's actually a lot going on.

[–] LuckyFogic@kbin.earth 0 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Maybe I'm just looking for a different type of advertisement. I'm interested in what combat looks like, what gameplay loop they're going for, which professions are intended for release (and the profession system in general), what game types are supported (PvP, WvW, GvG), team composition goals, etc. Lore and visuals are cool, I guess, but I don't but a product for its look or backstory.

[–] Overspark@piefed.social 1 points 3 days ago

All of that will follow in due course. Guild Wars is a very story-heavy franchise so it's logical that they focus on the setting first before diving into those details. We still have about 1.5 years before we can play the beta so that's plenty of time to elaborate.

But I want to be a planty people ;_; Still amazing though!!

I've never really played any GW games, but a honest to goodness new MMO from a experienced studio is exciting! For so long the genre have been awash with kickstarter scams like Ashes of Creation or multiple Ultimas, it's encouraging to have some hope.

[–] BadlyDrawnRhino@aussie.zone 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Since this is set in Orr, I'm assuming it'll be another time jump, as it looks quite different!

I wonder what their plans are for GW2 to make sure certain content remains accessible with a dwindling population. Fingers crossed for some kind of heroes system like in GW1!

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago

They say in the website that it takes place over 1000 years before gw1. I was looking over the known timeline a little, and I can't help but notice that about that long ago is when the god war happens, the one which banished abaddon.

Also worth noting that it looks like abaddon is one if the six gods shown (also potentially dhuum instead of grenth?). If that second one is true it would put us a few decades before the god war happens, which sounds plausible?

[–] voxthefox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Rumors are its a prequel to the first 2

[–] Nora@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

considering Orr is destroyed and the gods show multiple who are dead, its definitely a prequel.

This may put us timeline wise into The Guild Wars the games are named after.

I will miss sylvari though, not many fantasy races I love as much as I do sylvari. Maybe some timeline nonsense in gw2 will give me sylvari.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I love tree people! It's an under served niche!

Can't wait! Looks like Kodan will be a playable race?

I loved 1, and I thought 2 was a very good evolution of that. I'm excited to see where 3 goes. I know a lot of people didn't like the Living Story stuff, but I thought it was good, if a bit long winded. I'd like to see a refined version of that. I'd also like to see a little more team play. I don't necessarily want a full TANK/DPS/SUPPORT role designation, but I would like to have the ability to lean a little more into those archetypes, all of the classes in 2 felt like DPS mains with a little other flavor sprinkled in.

[–] 5PACEBAR@piefed.ca 3 points 1 week ago

GW2 is one of my favorite games. I'll be pre-ordering the shit out of this!

[–] Dremor@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I honestly hope this will play better on the Deck than GW2.

Fuck yeah, gw2 is my favorite mmo I've ever played, and its not even close. I'm so excited for this.

[–] fenrasulfr@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I am excited for the next installment. I will most likely preorder the game, I have thouroughly enjoyed their current games and are willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I wonder how action orriented they will make the game. I saw some speculation that it will be a lot like warframe.
