The 15% "TAX" headline is COMPLETE LIE. A misrepresentation - READ THE ARTICLE. It is NOT a TAX but a requirement that streamers spend 15% of Canadian revenue to PURCHASE or CREATE CANADIAN CONTENT. This is a Canadian content law. NOT A TAX.

Canada is good about supporting local artists. I love that local artists must be played on the radio.

[–] RandAlThor@lemmy.ca 20 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Rest of the world needs to do this too.

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 13 points 3 days ago

One thing I like is that the revenue from these taxes go explicitly to the threatened industries. So the more that Canadians stream US works, the more money there is for Canadian tv, movies and radio to compete. Too often, income like this is directed into a general revenue stream, leaving the threatened industries with the same or even less resources to compete with.

Not really. France did the same and we were flooded with the lowest tier crap ever because of that law: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toubon_Law

There is no solution to that problem though.

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago

I'd genuinely take the lowest tier crap if it meant Canada's media landscape wasn't overwhelmed with American propaganda

Canada has had good local content laws for a few decades now. Because of the local content law in radio and television, we got Celion Dion and Bieber and Drake. Prior to that all the music was American or British. We have a lot of local shows now. It's always cheaper for broadcasters/streamers to buy a license than ask someone to make/produce shows and buy them. This forces them to source locally and give local talent a chance.

I can't comment on Celine Dion (not my kind of music at all, I literally know only one song and I bet you know which one), but Bieber took like a decade to start putting out music that didn't actively make people want to kill themselves and Drake is both a pedophile and more importantly, not really that good. Kendrick dissed him and he tried to sue the label instead of dissing him back. Not necessarily great examples IMO, even if numerically successful. I mean the latter two because, again, the first is just not my genre whatsoever.

Canada has some actually great TV shows though. Trailer Park Boys, Letterkenny come to mind first. I've heard a lot of good about Schitt's creek but haven't seen it yet.

Is this a selling point or..?

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We also got Rush, Reboot, and Kim's Convenience?

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

due south, corner gas, and my niece's (who trains horses) current favorite, heartland (which is literally older than she is)

[–] 9488fcea02a9@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Heartland has been on for 19 years???? Thats wild!

I've been watching 22 mins for most of my adult life

[–] CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

...and a 25% tarrif like our steel and aluminum.

Reciprocity.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 0 points 3 days ago

Yes, but no. Maybe we shouldn't have streaming cartels at all. Just focusing on enabling content creators wherever they may be, for the sake of the content. You'd be hard pressed to find less deserving less capable stewards of content, than the ones currently stewarding it.

Honestly I wouldn't care if content I make was shown for free to everyone in the world. As long as I had housing/health/food security and self determination. As would most creative people.

[–] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We need more shows like Orphan Black. Especially since streaming just kills off any show with an interesting premise after one season.

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

Continuum is another decent Canadian sci-fi thing. ReGenesis is also decent.

[–] redsand@infosec.pub 3 points 2 days ago

Arrrrg. 15% of 0 be 0

[–] usualsuspect191@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Can we also add a surcharge so I never have to see an ad again?

[–] Therefore@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Send me 50¢ per day and I'll share a link to ublock origin?

[–] usualsuspect191@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I use an adblocker, but would like to financially support the creators that create the content I consume. Blank CDs back in the day supposedly had a surcharge built in to cover piracy and I like the idea of something like that. Not sure how it would work, maybe some sort of "toll" system where instead of an ad I pay the amount the advertisers did to not see it.

There's no way that advertisers are paying as much as it would cost me to subscribe to everything, so why can't I pay that amount to serve myself "blank" (nonexistent) ads? Or just an extra surcharge that goes to creators and I'll just keep using the adblocker guilt free.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

In my country they actually implemented that recently, any storage drive or phone or computer with storage built in that you buy comes with a surcharge which goes to the artists union so the successful ones can have a bit of money and I'm imagining the less successful ones get a cent or two lol

[–] knobbysideup@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

But, I stream the red green show every day.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The Canadian tuxedo would have gone extinct if it wasn't for this law.

[–] Skyrmir@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Would that include Stargate SG-1? It was all filmed in Canada.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

On that theme, MacGyver too.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

Kind of like heritage minutes? Pretty sure Canadians were always in favor of that.

[–] AmazingSUPERG@thelemmy.club 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

So the streamers will pass on the cost to the end user or insert more ads to pay for it.

[–] RandAlThor@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No, they will make more Canadian shows and earn revenue the same way.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

They already film a lot of shows in Canada. They just aren’t branded as Canadian. I wouldn’t be surprised if streaming channels are already meeting this target.

Then not much will change tbh

Elephant in the room is who has recently bought up a bunch of streaming services ;)

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world -3 points 2 days ago

Only if Canada could step up their game produce better content.

cant fix boring writing with pathetic dialog and lack of talent+big ego and complete lack of standards with a law.

Too many Canadians fall into “but my aunt liked my stuff” excuse and expect no notes.

[–] CluckN@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Oi you have a streamy license?
