Is there an orientation manual for Lemmy? Honestly, Lemmy isn’t even the first DDG result for Lemmy (the first result is the Motorhead founder).
Why wouldn't he be? He's infinitely more well known than the fediverse.

It's just an observation of how hard it is to find information on something that isn't even its own top search result.
The fediverse is a better more searchable name. Because it isn't just Lemmy, piefed, mastodon, mbin, miskey, pixelfed, or loops. Its all of them.
As for communities, its still early days. You often have to be the change you want to see.
Part of the charm is the friction, tho. Keeps out the riffraff. Though, I'm feeling a bit riffraffy on Voyager atm.
It's definitely a more manigable cozy affair.

Its not as large as reddit but still large. Many of us peruse all and block communities we have no interest in. I block meme and sports and very niche communites unless im into that very niche thing. Of course also block trolls or such or users who irriate you. create the experience you want. in piefed I there is a nice thing to make notes on users which is great to not block right away over one thing.
I generally do a quick run through of their comment history to see if they're an inveterate troll or they're just having a bad day. At least I did before people started hiding their history on reddit.

I have never blocked anything or anyone, I have not either reported anyone for anything. Except I guess once in my first year on social media, once or twice obvious influence agents accounts,
I'd be curious to see from which of my subs I've blocked users. Some places are more contentious than others... I've never blocked a user from a cat sub, for instance.

I prefer voyager, which has the same front-end essentially as apollo (ios app) for reddit back before the api shenanigans. it can be downloaded as an app or used as a web app
edit, something might be up with the fdroid link to it? it is downloadable here https://github.com/aeharding/voyager but the fdroid link in the readme brings me to a not-found page.

edit, i just figured out that my fdroid repo is several months out of date. i found it after syncing with the repo, and my voyager was severely out of date. thanks for reminding me to check on that!

More seriously, as to your question: my home feed is all (as opposed to just the communities I've subscribed). Unlike Reddit, Lemmy is still small enough, civilized enough, and patronized by people with decent enough mental faculties, that you can read all without being deluged with angry, stupid or flamebait messages.
Me, I only block communities that don't speak a language I understand - unless I have a compelling reason not to block them - and communities full of delusional or overly aggressive people (i.e. usually tankies).
I suggest you do that too. You'll get a very good feel of what goes on in here.
I think you're assuming a know a lot more than I do. So I made an account and joined sh.itjust.works. I have a home feed, which I thought was just local stuff, but maybe also includes some common things with lemmy.world (including maybe this post itself?)
So far I've blocked one community and one user because there was some passive aggressive shit going and I got that scapegoat-vibe so common in reddit. Got some hope for Lemmy, because, yeah, I think people just get stupid when there's enough of them together in the same place.
And even though sh.itjust.works is tagged a FR-EN community, ain't seen a lick of french anywhere.
There are typically 3 feeds:
- Subscribed - this only shows posts from communities you have subscribed
- Local - only posts from communities on your local or home instance, you may see post's and comments from people on other instances, but all of the communities are on sh.itjust.works
- All - this shows all posts from communities across any instance*
- only posts from communities that a user on your home instance is subscribed to appear, also your instance can block instances. Those blocked instances will not appear.
Re French: there is an instance called jlai.lu that is a French instance. You can check out their communities and subscribe for more French content.

What I meant was, don't sweat it too much. Just use it and you'll figure things out pretty quickly. It's not rocket science.
And yeah, you'll find idiots here too. Like, a lot of idiots. Idiots are everywhere. But they tend to concentrate more on Reddit than on Lemmy, which is why I prefer this place.
I was glad to learn it's a Canadian server, because I was worried if it was in France I'd be absolutely screwed by the time zone difference....
But they might want to update their whole "Bilingual" community in the tag, because it's all in English.
I'm a self-aware idiot, so I appreciate communities that don't allow mef to indulge my basal ganglia.
I have had a lot of very good very insightful conversations on Reddit actually. There are just so many people, combined with so many influence agencies, combined with an Administration that is corrupted to powerful interests, that makes it bad. It's hard to find engagement sometimes because there is so much on there, and half of it is worthless bot traffic drowning out real users.
Try a few instances to see which one you like more.
I feel like I have pretty varied interests, though, so my ideal community might be a conglomeration; or I'd need separate accounts (is that frowned upon) for multiple communities.
As long as your instance federates with other instances, there isn’t a need to have a separate account.
For example, I am a member of lemmy.dbzer0.com and you are part of sh.itjust.works and we are able to communicate no problem.
You can subscribe, post, comment, private message across the fediverse.
Some instances defederate with others for a litany of reasons, political, mods/admins, etc. sometimes it’s temporary.
Picking an instance, you should try a few to see which ideology matches yours the best.
Edit: the federation (which is how instances get posts) can even be across applications. For example, piefed and lemmy share posts. Even mastodon and other fediverse sites can share! It’s really cool!
I seem to be doing ok on my first and current server. My only real complaint is that a few times I've tried to have a nuanced conversation and it's just turned into a competition to see who has the furthest-left take on it, but that's really not the worst thing in the world.
Think the community I like is pragmatic left(?)... gonna see where its coming from; probably a confederated thing since it has >0 traffic.
