Like the C in cookie, not like the C in ace

Holy shit, I totally forgot about that. English is a weird language.

I mean which pronunciation is considered the “hard C”? Is it the one that sounds like s or the one that sounds like k?

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The "k" sound is the hard "c" :)

Thanks. The “hard” / “soft” terminology has never made sense to me, it’s always felt very arbitrary as to which is which. Also useless in the explaining the correct pronunciation of “gif”

English is a silly language. And you're right i don't know of any rules, asides from it just being innate I suppose!

TIL the german word Kaiser is directly derived from Caesar :o

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Also czar, tsar, císař, csaszár, keizer, keisari, kejser, cesarz, césar

Though at least one of those means the specific title of Roman Emperor. Incidentally, "emperor" comes from the latin word imperator.

Like, the salad or the hero?

[–] MyVeryRealName@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

You pronounce them differently?
