There seems to be a neverending supply of complaints about the size and reach of the Fediverse and I'm just sitting here thinking this is about all the attention I'd like it to ever get. This is fucking nice. Doesn't monopolize your whole day, always has at least some fresh content, users are free with the upvotes and discourse is downright civil most of the time. Does anybody really want this place to be like Reddit or Instagram?
I'd been using Instagram as my scrapbook of neat things I've done/made for several years. Mainly it's for my own personal enjoyment but I left it public because artist types like showing off I guess. Anyway, I accidentally made a post that went mildly viral, 300k views and 8k likes, and it pretty much took the fun out of it for me. I guess I didn't really want an audience, I just wanted to look in the river like Narcissus. Now everytime I glance I get a notification that ripples my reflection.
I caught the tiger by the tail. What a world.
Anyone who was on ultra early reddit like I was knows the fediverse is like Reddit, very early Reddit, it was great, this is great.
It's unironically the meme of Donald Glover showing up with pizza and everything is on fire, every time I go on instagram.
It should not get like Reddit, but I still wish for more users so that some more specific "subreddits" (what's the term used here on Lemmy?) are getting more users and more posts.
Have you considered more fediverse to make up for that shortfall?
If I run out of things on Lemmy that interest me, I switch gears to mastadon... If I'm getting tired of that shit, there's pixelfed
With a lot of these new, non-algo driven sites you only see what you sign up for, so whatever kind of mood I was feeling the day I signed up, will influence how the site works for the first few months until it normalizes, and you find all your communities. i.e. my mastadon feed is chock a block FULL of self hosting Linux nerds, AND ITS AWESOME!
the biggest gap still seems to be sports though, especially niche sports (I live breath and sleep MotoGP, and there ain't shit about MotoGP on Lemmy lol)
I get waaay more comments and replies on my posts here than I ever did on reddit around the API situation.
There's less people here, but your comments aren't buried, and my posts are much much less likely to be removed by power tripping mods. (I've had posts about Stop Killing Games removed from the popular reddit gaming subreddits).
This place is way nicer to interact with by far.
All 12 of us you mean?
There's a dozen of us! A DOZEN!
I don't bother posting the content (porn, but silly) I create here
On reddit, it gets a lot of traction
I don't care about the imaginary internet points, I like it when my fans tell me that they got a laugh from it
What are you talking about? My comment got an upvote no more than 2 weeks ago.

We need !highqualitygifs@lemmy.world to reopen or start a new one.
Great idea but there's a reason why people have a hard time getting the GIF train rolling
#1 being that GIF is turning into an ancient internet image standard that is sort of kinda maybe adopted and supported ... it was supposed to be retired because it was an old format but it is surviving because of some strange attachment we all have to this format ... and any site that offers to host a GIF is often technically not really hosting a GIF but instead a WEBM masked as a GIF ... because to host an actual GIF, like the one from the top post of the highqualitygifs community ... you have to load a 47MB GIF file from an image website (the same video file for the same or better quality could be contained in a WEBM or MP4 for about 4MB). (Don't get me started on the whole WEBM / MP4 open source debate) The problems start in first creating the GIF file and to make it as high quality as possible while minimizing its file size ... GIF is not very efficient are reducing file size ... and whatever blood sacrifice, chicken entrails black magic you can conjure in order to make a great looking video file as small as possible and save it as a GIF is a dying art ... and even once you get that magical GIF, you have to find a good hosting service to carry it and display it while also not severely altering it or rerendering it in whatever format is suitable to them because every platform has their own peculiar way of hosting a GIF ... and then you run into the issue of which hosting site renders or displays a GIF is compatible with the fediverse platform you want to display it on and whether or not it will get displayed on the website browser or on a phone app (and also which app) or both or neither.
I tried creating GIFs before and it is like pulling teeth from an epileptic shark ... and creating it is only the first step ... finding a way to have it uploaded and displayed properly on as many platforms and services as possible is akin to trying to pet a rabid hyena.
On the bright side, at least the gif/jif/yiff debate will fade into obscurity.
I was unaware of yiff as an option and I am here for it
Yes.
I would rather use Reddit than Instagram. Holy shit have you tried to see your friends posts on IG lately? You can’t.
Lmao
Half of them are AI slops and the reels... Disgusting
I'm not going back. I have gills now.
hehe
Ads can't reach us under water
No, this isn't right. Fediverse is on the edge of the pool, just getting feet wet. That's a pre-Reddit user on a platform long gone.
