I don't see how those two things are connected

It's a story about his environment

I'm really interested as to why it has so many replies. Pretty straightforward story! Would you honestly have done anything different in his position?

[–] qualia@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Thank you for prematurely answering what the significance of all the hashtags meant. I've avoided the chans. Would you recommend them for anything that Lemmy doesn't do?

I don't actively use it, you can simply tell the # bit is a reply because sometimes the greentext screenshot has one of the strings of numbers highlighted and a comment pops up in an overlapping window.

I did visit it a few times over one summer as a kid, it wasn't good.

  • Pornographic adverts on every page in some communities.
  • Only has less than a score of different communities.

I found /sci/ the most interesting but iirc it had a lot of racism and was also elitist in favour of high functioning autistic people, and STEM majors. One short summer of 4chan usage essentially psyopped me into focusing in STEM stuff, and being a bit of an intellectual elitist, which probably wasn't best for me as a person.

4chan isn't a real "social" media like Lemmy. Its largely people posturing. Also it's a site of manipulation from Israel and Epstein's pals. Just, nah. If you wanted to go there to find alt viewpoints and culture, I think you can get everything you need from Twitter. Which I also don't use anymore because it's bad for me.

One problem with communities like 4chan and even twitter is that it uses the dynamic of "male club/friend group where people bully each other to intimidate them out of leaving or having independent thoughts."

Do people have to tiptoe on eggshells around here about 4chan? Does visiting that website automatically make you a bad person unless you provide an explanation?

This is how people have viewed 4chan for a while now.

People think anyone who spent any time on 4chan are pedophiles/racists/misogynists.

They're mainly right but it's a mixed bag.

Don't get me wrong 4chan can be a horrible place but most people just assume if you visit 4chan you're on /b/ or /pol/ which is generally where things can get really dark really fast.

4chan does have some decent boards though just that you always have to be on guard for trolls.

AFAIK the /a/nime board translates and posts manga and do a really great job of it.

Lol, good point. I'm actually just doing that because assholes i used to talk to irl tried to "cancel" me by pretending i was an active 4chan user, and i did tell one member of thst friendgroup about this site recently. I am no longer gonna let my pathetic trauma get in the way of acting normal online. This isn't reddit, after all.

Lemmy actually seems not blindly-anti-4chan, which is nice.

Still, i wouldn't actually want to use it again. But it definitely has normal people on, because it wouldn't function otherwise.

I hung out there a bit 20 years ago, because it was meant to be the best place that all the memes came from. it's actually just porn, racism and fascists. No I'd say no.

[–] qualia@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

That’s why I’ve always steered clear.

[–] MML@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

No, I'd ride around in my go kart at night.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

I mean I would have discerned what she said, she could have needed help.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

where is this place you can ride go karts around at night? that's what I would like to know.
