Clickbait title with the article jumping to conclusion

Among a list of demands made by the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran is that only officially recognized national flags should be displayed during the team’s games, extending to those flags carried by fans in the stands.

If you click on another article about the "Pride Match", it talks about how poorly ticket sales are - seems that FIFA (and sports news outlets reliant on FIFA) want to drum up 'hubbub'.

World Cup Pride Match tickets still available as final sales phase opens

There were plenty of tickets available for the World Cup‘s first-ever designated Pride Match when FIFA’s “last-minute sales phase” began Wednesday.

It's amazing how much the Iranian regime has in common with the current US regime and MAGA.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Are we forgetting how they violently break up mass protests against their far right radical theocracy? The Iranian regime is just a different flavor of fascism.

[–] Wrufieotnak@feddit.org 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes? That's what they said?

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world -5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They said it‘s amazing as if it was any surprise. It really isn‘t.

[–] ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip 2 points 10 hours ago

You can be amazed without being surprised. Surprise is not even a common usage of that word

Both want to destroy US and it's global influence. Trump has done that faster than any psyops or military force ever could, if you exclude nuclear Armageddon.

[–] Brummbaer@pawb.social 1 points 21 hours ago

I don't think the GOP can ever get over it's hate if Muslims, but if they do, I'm pretty sure they would perfectly align with Iran.

They have a lot of common enemies, that is, minorities to fight.

[–] DandomRude@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Yes, indeed. It cannot be emphasized enough that the term "fundamentalism" historically referred specifically to a movement within American Protestantism that held the view that the Bible is the direct word of God, free from error and flaw.

However, at the latest after September 11, the term came to be applied primarily to Muslim religious fanatics, thereby unfortunately pushing the danger posed by fanatics from other religious communities into the background.

Now that U.S. fundamentalists are so openly spreading their inhuman terror throughout the world, it is once again becoming clear what unscrupulous monsters they are.

Among a list of demands made by the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran is that only officially recognized national flags should be displayed during the team’s games, extending to those flags carried by fans in the stands.

If enforced, that would prevent the visibility of Pride rainbow flags

The sensationalist headline vs. what the article actually says are two very different things.

it's likely that there are other reasons Iran don't want flags. It's all politics. https://iranwire.com/en/features/152112-iran-wants-opposition-flags-banned-at-the-2026-world-cup-but-america-isnt-qatar/

Yeah Israel PR team trying so hard to win over liberals by saying Iran is anti lgbtq.

Listen.

I don't care if they are or aren't in regards to the genocide.

Rather their government or religion is anti lgbtq or not doesn't give another country the right to do a genocide on them.

Israel is trying so hard to win over the lgbtq and their allies by repeatedly saying Iran is anti gay.

Yeah so is Israel.

So is the U.S.

It's all just what-aboutism.

There is no excuse for what Israel is doing to Gaza or Iran.

None.
There is nothing they can say about Iran or Palestinians or Muslims that will excuse their actions.

[–] YoureHotCupCake@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

Also Israel is killing more queer people than Iran is. Queer Palestinians exist and are dying in a genocide with the rest of the their people. Queer Lebanese people exist and are having their homes and lives destroyed too. When you kill indiscriminately you are killing queer people in the process, as well as numerous other demographics.

If you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen.

... Heading into a room temperature salad bar...

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 4 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

If you can’t handle the conditions get out of the food preparation area.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

If you think I can't handle conditions, why you give me a conditional statement ???

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 1 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

If you think I think that, why you give me a conditional statement.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 0 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

if we're stuck in an infinite loop, can I bring snacks?

[–] Individual_Orchid@sh.itjust.works 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

As long as they aren't the ones with lactose

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 0 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

who puts lactose in their crisps?

Ask Frito Lays why they do that? They were good until I couldn't eat them without gas and a gut ache or worse

[–] Goun@lemmy.ml 20 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Sounds baity af, they demanded that "only officially recognized national flags should be displayed during the team’s games", not saying I agree or not, but that's a different thing.

[–] ggtdbz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is almost certainly about the Shah flag, this is an interesting spin on that

[–] LazyGit@feddit.org 9 points 1 day ago

Came here to say the same.

They are worried about the Iranian flag which has a lion in front of the sun.

[–] Quokka@quokk.au 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)
[–] ati@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

Might be more to do with the royalist Iranian flags then.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Just in case someone developed any sympathy towards them...

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 6 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

that's an idiotic take.

You can be against US interventionism and endless warcrimes. without becoming a fan for the current Iranian regime.

It isn't sports.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 1 points 22 hours ago (2 children)
[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

implying that you have to pick a side and unconditionally support it.

Iran doesn't have to be a beacon of a perfect society in order for it to be wrong to bomb its civilians.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)
[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

That's what I interpreted from your comment,

[–] Klear@piefed.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Why? It suggests nothing of the sort.

[–] workerONE@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Telling people they shouldn't be sympathetic to Iran.

First, Iran as a country has more parts than just it's government. Iranian people are friendly and welcoming. Second, Iran never said anything about Pride flags. They said "only officially recognized national flags should be displayed during the team’s games, extending to those flags carried by fans in the stands."

[–] Tja@programming.dev -1 points 20 hours ago

Never said that people "shouldn't be sympathetic to Iran".

Second... Good one.

[–] queerlilhayseed@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I think this is fairly savvy shit-stirring by the Iranians. Demand something that Trump's base is ideologically aligned with and force Trump to either cave to the Iranians or side with The Gays™.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 17 hours ago

you know at first I did not get what you are saying but yeah since its in the us if he says he does not want him it looks like he is doing what they say. All the same a dangerous game to mess with the groups that are more likely to be supportive of you.

[–] aquovie@lemmy.cafe 2 points 23 hours ago

In a really twisted sort of way, it shows how a country can make really smart moves (social media war/propaganda, Hormuz choke point, etc) once your elderly leaders are removed (in this case, by bombs).

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The internet must be really hard these days when you can't find the "continue without disabling" button.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 1 points 15 hours ago

I don't care enough to click through a bunch of bullshit to read the story.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Let them demand what they want...

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago

You can stay home if seeing a few colorful flags and happy people are that triggering for you.

Edit: And demanding that annual pride celebrations be hidden would be just asking for a riot, which I'm sure Seattle leaders know full well.
