For real, the trucking companies are so full of compassionate work-life balance champions, this guy deciding to drive for sixteen hours purely for the love of the game is a despicable act. He has sullied the reputation of the worker-first shipping industry with his unprecedented and selfish decision to drive while overtired, for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Please expand on how you think a conservative government would address this. Just stating it like it’s fact is not an argument.

I can’t think of a single thing a conservative government has ever achieved for the benefit of society at large. The rich? Sure. Working class? Pretty sure they want us dead.

It was Stephen Harper that introduced consecutive sentencing. If you kill 4 people, you do 4 life sentences back to back. Today, if you kill multiple people, anything over 25 years is considered cruel and unusual punishment by the Supreme Court (all liberal appointed).

A conservative government is more victim (or damage to society) based for justice, rather than a liberal offender based justice system.

On a completely different note, it was Mulroney that brought us the free trade agreement with the USA, which we are just now realizing how important it is.

They do run on an old fashioned and unscientific yearning for vengeance-as-justice, yessss.

An empiricist government might address the whole '16 hours of continuous driving' that is rampant in the industry, make sure he never drives again, and make the sentence include some kind of restitution.

But performative punishment is more fun yeah? Stockades and then chopping off a hand might satisfy those folks.

How do you decide when a prison sentence is appropriate, or vengeance? Maybe there shouldn't be any jailtime if the offender is just really, really sorry.

That lack of nuance combined with an aversion to improving shitty systems that don't work, and an aversion to whatever the science says in combination with front-line problem solvers, characterizes conservative policy.

I have to be honest, I don't know what you were trying to say. I am disappointed the people that put this driver on the road without the proper training aren't in front of a judge. That's where the crime started.

I didn't say make the sentence community service, which you seem to imply. New justice systems will be complex and results-oriented. Yeah responsibility for dangerous jobs needs to focus up the ladder. Jail as punishment doesn't solve any of the problems except preventing interaction with free society. Victims don't see justice or restitution, only vengeance. The expense is huge. Accomplices go free.
