I'm reading a book about the use of streets in antiquity, and it compares usage to environments in the 20th century and developing countries today and just... this level of socialization with strangers on the street is foreign to me.

We lose something in making streets movement-oriented instead of truly public.

Yeah, the "third place" that everyone talks about literally used to just be outside. You'd just walk out your door and start interacting with everybody else who did the same.

Crazy… I’m literally there right now!

Small world!

Can you give us an update? Is everyone still dressed in suits and hats?

There’s a bum yelling loudly and a bunch of people walking as fast as possible. There’s a line at Starbucks.

He must be doing a lot of business, because I don't see a single beard in this photo!

I noticed that too. People just didn't even think about it back then. Sad.

Whoa... that's a load of men not wearing hats. oO

I mean, that's an almost meaningless distinction across most of history I guess, but if I understand correctly, hats and dress attire were almost mandatory, those days. In that location and city...

Yeah I always heard that before JFK all men in the US wore hats and that after JFK none did.

This photo proves that to be a lie. 😆

It's seriously pretty surprising to me historically-speaking to see this photo. Look at a bunch of random photos from this period from 1st-world countries & similar and ~90%+ of men are wearing hats.

Btw, I tend to think the JFK thing is fairly accurate for the USA. Once the 60's got going with the bigger hair and all, the usual kinds of 'society-safe' hats just looked stoopid.

Hats 'n ties, that's my type of attire!

This needs to make a comeback.

(These were even factory workers during the great depression!)

All that open pavement reserved for cars, and the pedestrians have to stay packed onto the sidewalk. 😢
