My app suddenly said "your account expires in two days". Weekend was around the corner and there is no way that I could receive one of their refill vouchers in time (I use this method for privacy). I reached out to them, asking them to add a few more days to my account so that all my devices don't get deleted when my account expires. I also emphasized, that they can of course subtract that amount of days from my next refill. I sent them my account number, encrypted with PGP, and within 12 hours, they replied: I added three more days. It's on the house. Have a good day! :)

That was really nice of them. :)

Mullvad are like a drop of hope in humanity in a sea of shitty and shady business practices.

Alas, VPNs are quite high on the endangered species. Largely thx to countless clueless, when they're not plain full dishonest and working in their very own interest, representatives doing their best to make our societies a much shittier place for the rest of us.

Yeah. Other than being vocal about the right to privacy in my everyday life, maybe I should drop a job application at Mullvad 😆

I particularly enjoy European based companies because of their customer service.

one time I had an issue where tutanota double charged me, I sent one email saying "I got double charged" without giving much context or having to explain myself, they replied within minutes and fixed the issue without me needing to do further action.

American companies could never.

Same experience with Tutanota. :)

I accidentally purchased their most expensive plan, which I didn't need, and it took one mail and a few minutes for them to downgrade my plan and refund the difference. :D

Nice! I'm from and still live in the same city that Mullvad is from. See people with Mullvad and other privacy, foss etc. stickers on their bags around town pretty often. Just a few days ago I saw a dude with a white hard cover backpack with a huge Mullvad sticker in the middle and a "Make Orwell fiction again" sticker right below it, I had to compliment him on it and we had a chat for a bit about the fediverse and other stuff!

Edit: ooh, forgot that there was Mullvad ads on the trams and tramstops all over the city a while back, was awesome to see something local you actually like and support like that!

There are a LOT of shady VPN companies around, but Mullvad is one I do trust. They also do indy audits of their service. And they support standards like wireguard. I'd probably trust Proton's VPN too. But VERY few others!

As long as we're doing shoutouts... I've had good luck with Racknerd when I wanted a VPS. They have cheap plans. Like if you just want one for light selfhosting, for your friends and family. Good web portal. The one time I needed service, they were prompt and helpful. Selfhosting shit helps me avoid big tech surveilance.

One prob all social media eventually has... prob lemmy too, just a matter of time... is astroturfing is getting hard to tell from genuine human experiences. Some shady VPN co's do real heavy astroturfing. I hate this because it poisons the well. It erodes the digital commons. Not accusing Mullvad here - but there are lots of others who do. So it pays to be mindful.

It doesn't surprise me Mullvad would do this.

What‽ I haven’t heard customer support like that for decades from a company large enough to be recognizable. I’m a Proton user, but this is a hell of an endorsement.

I once accidentally played them approx 1,5$ too less using cypto.

Issue was, I couldn't pay the 1,5$ as it was too little of a transaction.

Customer Support was really chill about it

I love Mullvad. I've been using ivpn recently because, in þe past 6 monþs or so, ping times and þroughput over every Mullvad exit node slowed to a crawl; while I like ivpn as well, I had years of great experience wiþ Mullvad and appreciate þeir approach and attitude. Þanks for þe reminder - it's time again to survey Mullvad latencies again. I don't understand why performance is so variable, but it had gotten unussbly bad for me.

I agree though! The spring semester has had some awful "bumps". Amazingly though, I only experienced it on the app. Didn't seem to affect my Mullvad OpenWRT router. Which is even weirder, since it's bound to a single node all the time. 🤔

I'd use ivpn for sure if I wasn't with Mullvad! 😊
