There used to be a fad where you took Furry Transformation drugs, it was all the rage when Goku was a kid
Somehow the Red Ribbon Army was behind the manufacturing of these drugs.
But the fad died down around Z, and most people went back to being human. Most people, you can still see animal people in the background shots of some of the Z Movies, I wanna say Android 13 and Lord Slug have them

"Drugs."
I'm gonna be honest, I think that's super lame.
How is "i didn't feel like drawing them anymore" less boring?
Because then at least the universe still exists in your imagination without being a shitty retcon cop out.
Edit: I also want to clarify, I'm not against change or drugs or bodymods, by any means, and I do think the drug idea is actually really cool. BUT - using it as a means to bs your way AS AN AUTHOR out of having any animal people anymore feels really messed up. And also Lazy. It would be one thing if it were a fan theory, which I still feel like it might be, but that it's canon is like ... It just feels so fricking cheap and like "there never were any animal people because it was all just bodymods" like bro fuck you yeah there were, we all saw the animal people and the world was more colorful and wonderous for it.
If they want to save it, maybe have both: have the majority of people be animal people, they've just gone into hiding, but then there is also a technology in the world that's capable of turning people into animal people and animal people into human people. Like the reason we haven't been seeing animal people is because they've been transformed/hiding/playing as humans.
Don't take away animal-people authenticity! They exist!
This is far more terrifying than the existence of animal people

Lot of names in Dragonball have little puns behind them. Some survive translation unscathed, some don't. Ka(carrot). Vegeta(ble). Nappa (Cabbage), Raditz (Radish). Bulma comes from Bloomer, Her dads name is Dr. Brief, her mom is Panchy (Panty), and her son is Trunks. Whole undergarments family.
Then there's the Journey to the West comparisons...
Also in the Buu saga, we have the the villain Bibidi, his son Babidi, and the monster Buu.
Put 'em together and what have you got? Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo!
Just learned recently that pilaf sama (DB season 1) has the character for fried rice on his shirt. So it's a pun on rice for this evil guy somehow.
I'm assuming the pun has something to do with rice pilaf.

I was telling my friend about the lore, and he thought I made up the name King Furry as a joke. Had to show him screenshots from DBZ:Kakarot to convince him otherwise

He reached the ripe old age of 11, so they just decided to wait him out.
It went the way most things do that leave Dragonball, Toriyama didnt like to draw them.

I juat watched the original dragonball recently. It was weird how the animal people seem completely absent in later series. They add a sort of je ne sais quoi that makes the original series hold up.
If you ignore the objectification of Bulma who is a teenager, that is. It seemed like every other episode Roshi was trying to be a perv on her.
Blame Gen Z.
There are still animal people in DBZ and subsequent series. A couple of them are even recurring characters and part of the story. wtf?
Beerus is a cosmic demigod not native to Earth. Idk if he counts as an "Animal Person" in the same way as Oolong or the Pilaf Gang's Shu. That said, both continue to exist in Z, GT, and Super as minor supporters/antagonists.
Incidentally, in interviews, Toriyama admits he forgot about the animal people between DB and DBZ for the most part. But mainline characters still show up from time to time.
